This portrait could be of Captain Daniel McCallum. In the Williamstown Chronicle dating back Saturday 16 March 1895 we could read: " An interesting ceremony will be performed at the Sailor's Rest next Thursday 21st. inst., when a large photo of the late Captain D. McCallum (which has been presented to the Rest) will be unveiled, in the presence, it is expected, of several of those who assisted Captain McCallum in his good, work amongst the sailors, and others who were closely connected with the Mr Ronald Reid a will supply the musical part of the pogramme." Captain McCallum was secretary of the Williamstown Sailors' Rest, located in Ann Street, and had himself saved the rest paying some of its debt. He died in 1887.Many portraits of supporters were unveiled in the several buildings of the Mission. The photograph wa published in the Age, 14th of June 1958. The picture shows the round stained glass dedicated on Sunday 14 December 1947 and the reredos with hangings donated by Maud Breaks in memory of her sister Louise Breaks and dedicated on 26 August 1954 by the Bishop of Geelong.This is a rare picture of the interior of the St Nicholas chapel which was erected behind the former E, S & A Bank building used by the Williamstown Seamen's Mission branch from 1944. Article in the Age reading: "Seamen's Window Dedicated - A window in St. Nicholas' Mariners' Church, at Williamstown, in memory of the merchant seamen who were killed on active service In the last war, was unveiled and dedicated yesterday.The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Geelong (Rt. Rev. J. D. McKie). The window, erected by the Williamstown Lightkeepers' Auxiliary of the Victoria Missions to Seamen is placed behind the altar. It shows a quartermaster, with his hand on the wheel, and the figure of Christ pointing ahead. Bishop McKie paid a tribute to the spirit of the men who gave their lives at sea in the service of their country. He said the work of the auxiliary would still be of great value, although the war was over." The decision of the window was published in August 1947, Mrs Musther -who created the Lightkeepers' Auxiliary branch in Williamstown - ordered it from Brooks, Robinson & Co. (job books 1923-1966). The caravel type ship with the cross represents the Santa Maria of Christopher Columbus. It is one of the symbols of the great sea explorers. A similar vase on sale on Ebay (April 2023) suggesting it was mass produced.One of the many decorative furnishings which date from the intense service periods of the Mission from the 1930s through to the 1960s. Found by the donor in 2017 in a thrift or Opportunity shop in Richmond, North Yorkshire, England. This brick was salvaged by the donors, members of PMHPS and former residents of Port Melbourne from the ruins of the Art Deco Mission to Seamen also known as King George V memorial building, built in 1937 by Harry Norris and demolished in 1995. Used in their former courtyard the donors, who recently moved to Docklands offered the brick to MTSV when they sold their Port Melbourne house in 2017.One of the few remaining tangible materials from the architecturally significant Mission to Seamen, the George V Memorial building dedicated in 1937 and demolished in the 1990s. The Brick adds to the MTSV collection of Port Melbourne material from the 1930s. See also Research and clippings folder and records such as 0641 and 0233. Miss Emily Dixon acted as Ladies Habour Lights Guild Work-Secretary and later, as Secretary of the Malvern Branch and continued to work for the group until her death. Miss Fanny Dixon worked as the Mission's organist and Committee member as well as friend. The plaque was unveiled by Mrs. Holmes on December 5th, 1943 and was dedicated by the Chaplain.
