The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. A photo of a group of ladies in Williamstown for Operation Float in 1962. The lady second from left is Mrs Violet Allen who led the summer camps at Blamey House for many years. Operation Float was an opportunity for junior legatees to experience sailing or boating on Port Philip Bay, often organised while they were at a summer camp. Junior Legatees from the country were brought to the city for a two week summer camp, often at Blamey House in Kew, while Junior Legatees from the city were billeted with families in the country. At the time Legatee Bert Davis was CFO, and his daughter Louise was asked to help with the running of the Blamey House camp. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.Training school 1 commenced 23/3/1950. This is an early 20th century piece of music, a popular song for piano and voice. It was composed by Carrie Jacobs-Bond (1862-1946), the first great American woman popular composer. She was born in Wisconsin and was an invalid for most of her life. Her second husband died after seven years of marriage and she struggled to support herself and a child. She became one of the most popular composers of her time and her song ‘A Perfect Day’ has been a concert favourite for a 100 years. The words of the song, ‘God Remembers When the World Forgets’, were written by Clifton Bingham who was born in Bristol, England and was an author of verses for children’s picture books as well as a writer of lyrics for popular songs. He was most famous for the words of ‘Love’s Old Sweet Song’. Grice’s Piano Store was at 92 Queen Street in Brisbane. This is an interesting piece of music as it represents the type of music popular early in the 20th century and the cover is artistic and charming. This is a four-page piece of sheet music (cover, frontispiece and three pages of music). The pages are of a creamy colour, perhaps once white. The second page has a three-stanza poem (‘How many gardens in this world of ours…’) printed in black and the musical notations are in black print. The front cover is multi-coloured, with a sketch of a rose branch with several roses (sketched by ‘Herbert’) This page has two pale green borders and a shop stamp. The back page has information on the publisher. The pages are in good condition, though there is some tearing on the folds. The organisation's work has included public awareness and education campaigns to control invasive, introduced species and protect native wildlife, such as campaigns to bait or trap foxes and to identify and monitor quoll populations in the region. The organisation has drawn on the work of a variety of Government and academic experts to inform best practice approaches are utilised. In 2004 Andrew Murray, a leading quoll expert from Parks Victoria, conducted training for Wooragee Landcare members and the local community in how to identify potential quoll habitat and populations (through identifying scat and other methods). Spotted-tail or Tiger quolls were known to have lived in the Mt Pilot and Stanley Plateau region previously but habitat encroachment, competitor species such as foxes and natural disasters had reduced sightings in recent years. The Spotted-Tail quoll (formerly known as the Tiger Quoll) is the largest of four species of native marsupial carnivore on mainland Australia, and the second-largest carnivore (after the dingo). The species' scientific name, Dasyurus maculatus, references its' 'hairy tail'. Adults are approximately 125cm long, including their long tail, and weigh around 5 kilograms. The Spotted-tail quoll is currently considered to be a threatened species, but other species are currently listed as endangered. The clock parts were discovered in 1980 by Julie Wilkins, a Victorian scuba diver who had already experienced more than 500 dives in Australia and overseas. She was holidaying in Peterborough, Victoria, and looking forward to discovering more about the famous Loch Ard ship, wrecked in June 1878 at Mutton Bird Island. The fast Glasgow-built clipper ship was only five years old when the tragedy occurred. There were 54 people on board the vessel and only two survived Julie's holiday photograph of Boat Bay reminds her of her most memorable dive. Submerged in the calm, flat sea, she was carefully scanning around the remains of the old wreck when, to her amazement, a gold coin and a small gold cross suddenly came up towards her. She excitedly cupped them in her hands and then stowed the treasures safely in her wetsuit and continued her dive. She soon discovered a group of brass carriage clock parts and some bottles of champagne. It was a day full of surprises. The items were easily recognisable, without any build-up of encrustations or concretion. Julie secretly enjoyed her treasures for twenty-four years then packed them up for the early morning train trip to Warrnambool. After a short walk to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, her photograph was taken as she handed over her precious find. She told her story to a local newspaper reporter, lunched a café in town then took the late afternoon train home. Her generous donation is now part of a vast collection of Loch Ard shipwreck artefacts, including the gold watch and the Minton Majolica model peacock. This group of brass clockwork parts is incomplete. The pieces were in the ocean for over 100 years before Julie recovered them from the Loch Ard wreck. Their size would suit the works of a carriage clock, with a mainspring and weight to power the clock movement, a pendulum to measure the clock's speed, arbours, posts, pillars and at least one other plate. They would have been mounted inside a protective case with a small door to easily access the clock face for setting the time and accessing the key's winding hole. The clock cases were usually made from decorative gilt brass with a glass front and a carrying handle. The parts include a weighted second hand with a decorative four-pronged finish at one end, a rounded weight at the other, and a hole for attaching it to the clock face. The gear teeth profiles are ‘cycloidal’, an arch shape with vertical sides, which is common for antique clocks. Modern clockworks have ‘involute’ teeth with sloping sides and a squared-off top. The brass carriage clock parts are an example of a mechanical clock produced in the 1870s. The clock's design is a part of the chain of technological improvements in methods for timekeeping. Its cycloidal gear teeth were the forerunner of the more modern involute gears. The group of clock parts includes a weighted hand or arm for signifying the seconds. This feature was uncommon in portable Victorian-era clocks. The clock parts are also significant for their association with the ill-fated sailing ship Loch Ard, wrecked in 1878. The travelling clock or officer’s clock may have been part of the cargo destined for the 1880 Melbourne Exhibition, or the personal possession of one of the people on board the vessel. Brass clockwork parts from a mechanical clock, sixteen pieces. Parts comprise a plate, large gears or wheels, small pinions or wheels with fine teeth, wheels with cogs, and a weighted second hand. The parts were from a carriage clock ca. 1878. The Children's Cottages at Kew were first opened in 1887 as the "Idiot Ward" of Kew Asylum. Located on the asylum's grounds, the children's cottages were established to provide separate accommodation for child inmates who had previously been housed with adult patients. Although the Cottages only admitted children as patients, many of those children remained in residence at the Cottages as adults. The function of the institution was to provide accommodation and educational instruction for intellectually disabled children. Some Wards of the State and other various "difficult" children were also admitted.Shortly after opening, the Idiot Ward began functioning separately from the Kew Lunatic Asylum, and became known as the Kew Idiot Asylum from 1887 until c.1929. From 1929 they have been known as the "Children's Cottages, Kew" or alternatively "Kew Cottages Training Centre". The institution was finally closed in July 2008. The Border Inn located on the corner of Main Street and Graham Street Bacchus Marsh opened in 1851 making it a very early hotel in Victoria. It was built and owned by John Pilmer. The first licensee was James Watt. The building has been added to and changed many times. It was originally a single storey building. A second storey was added in 1863 by John Pilmer. In 1866 the hotel was purchased by Edward Jones. The Jones family owned and operated the hotel until 1939. Additional second storey sections were added in 1883, 1904 and 1936. For a number of years the Border Inn was a stopping post for coaching services between Melbourne and Ballarat. The first licensee of the hotel James Watt was among the first in Victoria to offer a regular coaching service and his hotel was used for overnight accommodation by coach travellers. At the time this picture was taken coach services were still operating between Bacchus Marsh and other locations. The coach in this picture is possibly one of those coaches.This building has been documented as of state significance by Richard Peterson and Daniel Catrice in their 1995 heritage study for the then Shire of Bacchus Marsh. Their assessment of the heritage significance of the building was: "The Border Inn is of state historical significance as a pioneering pre-gold rush building, on the route to the Ballarat goldfields. It is the representative-embodiment of several historical periods and their way of life. It demonstrates a complex changing sequence of patterns of occupancy and architectural styles. Its development at this location, demonstrates the effect of a social movement, the gold rush, as a transport stopover.It is also historically significant for its association with the first rural public transport in Victoria. Locally, the hotel is significance for its association with the first meeting of municipal government, and also for its social significance as a traditional community, visitor focus and meeting place".Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The class photograph was taken at the Bulla State School No. 46 in 1930. Two children have been identified. They are John Daniel, seated in the front row, second from the left. Vincent Daniel is standing, first on the left in the back row. The Daniel family were store holders in the Bulla township. Over the years a teacher's residence and another larger weatherboard classroom were added to the original bluestone building. The school functioned for over 100 years from the late 1870s until 2006 when it was closed and is now a private house.The Bulla State School was one of the oldest schools in the district and served the children from surrounding areas. John Halfey (1825-89) was born in Southport, Lancashire and migrated to Victoria in 1852. After finding gold at Sandhurst, and representing the latter in the Victorian Parliament, he moved to Melbourne to engage in various commercial pursuits, including directorships of insurance, mining and banking companies. A resident of Kew from the late 1850s, he was known for the hospitality provided at his house Ordsall (later Southesk) in Cotham Road. On 14 December 1860, Halfey chaired a public meeting calling for separation from the Boroondara Roads Board, which led, four days later, to the proclamation of Kew as a separate municipality. He was elected to the Council in 1861, replacing Cr. Oswin, and subsequently served as the second Chairman of the Municipality in 1862-1863. John Halfey became a trustee of Holy Trinity Church in Bulleen Road (now High Street) in 1862. He was to resign from Council after four years in 1865. Twenty-four years later in January 1889, he died aged 63 from a seizure, at his rooms at the Herald Office. He was interred in the Boroondara General Cemetery where his monument is the tallest in the Cemetery. Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part of the local government district severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality. After meeting for 14 years in rented remises, in the Prince of Wales Hall, Wodonga Council built its first Shire Hall on the corner of High and Elgin Streets in 1890. The date on the façade of the building, 1876, represents the date of the formation of the Shire. In 1957 the second Shire Office was built in Woodland Grove by A.B. and M. A. Chick. These offices were considered more than adequate for future needs. The façade featured floor to ceiling windows and several different meeting rooms in addition to the council chamber, which featured an impressive “horse shoe” table. It also included a kitchen equipped with modern fittings and a President’s room. In the late 1960s the area between Hovell and Havelock Streets as far as Jack Hore Place was zoned for civic purposes. In 1969 plans for a civic centre providing a library, theatre and senior citizens’ rooms. It was opened on 22 April 1971. In 1973, the Council engaged Bruce Marshall to design new offices beside the Civic Centre. Jennings Industries were contracted to complete the offices. The Governor, Sir Henry Winneke, laid the foundation stone of the new offices on 10 March 1976. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh nearby districts between September and November 1883. The Royal Hotel was built in 1861 and is located on the corner of Main and Young Streets in Bacchus Marsh. The first owner was James Murray and the hotel was first known as the Murray Family Hotel. James Murray died in an accident in 1863 and sometime after this the ownership passed to Richard Manning. From around 1869 it became known as the Royal Hotel. Richard Manning's son Frederick Manning inherited the hotel in 1896. The Manning family owned the hotel until sometime after 1945. In more recent decades it has been owned and operated by a number of different people. The hotel continues to operate as of 2024. This image shows the building in its original structure. In 1888, five years after this image was taken, a second storey was added to the section on Young Street. In this image this section is the single storey section of wall without windows to the right of the picture. The image shows the Royal Hotel seen from the intersection of Main and Young Streets. The diagonal view shows both the Main Street and Young Street sides of the building. It is a two storey brick building with a single storey brick extension on the Young Street frontage. Standing at the corner of the building is a woman and five girls. A deep gutter runs along the Main Street, with a pedestrian crossing ramp. Over this crossing point, there is a large metal frame bearing an ornate lantern. Next to it is a water trough for horses. Death notice in local newspaper - Ringwood Mail 18/6/1942, and separate report of Miss Thomas being hit by a car driven by R. Naylor while crossing Station Street, Ringwood.Winifred Elva, beloved second daughter of H.O. and A. Thomas of Alexander Road Ringwood, and much loved sister of Grace,Rhys (deceased), Horace, Cornish, Rita, Elma and Gwen (Mrs Ron Westmore). Miss Thomas was well known in the district and for some years in business in Main Street, Ringwood. She was associated with church work including superintendent of the kindergarten at the Methodist Sunday school and the Junior Christian Endeavor.

The magazine was edited by Reverand R.C. Nugent Kelly as an Anglican Church publication. Reverend Kelly: Born in 1858 to Robert George and Mary Kelly (nee. Walker) of Birkenhead, England. Married Emma Louisa Edith Cremer in 1882 in England Died 11 Oct 1936 in Hornsby Shire, New South Wales, Australia Kelly joined All Saints Bendigo in 1896 where he edited the 'Our Own Magazine' and established a reputation for effective financial management. He left Bendigo in 1901. Much of his life was spent dedicated to church work which was documented as early as 1890. Now known as Old All Saints Cathedral, the church is located on the Northern corner of Mackenzie Street and Forest Street. The church was closed in 2015 and has remained abandoned. The church is located across the street from Bendigo Historical Society on Mackenzie Street. The Lambeth Conference: "The first Lambeth Conference took place in 1867 when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Charles Thomas Longley, invited the bishops of what would become the Anglican Communion to gather for a conference at Lambeth Palace.... There were two main issues that led to this invitation: First, a growing desire, expressed by many bishops around the world, to gather in order to pray, to study scripture and to confer together and, second, to address difficult pastoral and theological issues that were causing divisions between bishops around the world. These issues related to how the Christian gospel was and should be expressed in different cultures... Over successive Lambeth Conferences the mind of the bishops was expressed through published resolutions. These resolutions have touched on every area of the life and mission of the church... It has encouraged and enabled significant decisions to be made by the member churches" The 1897 conference resulted in 62 resolutions including the desire and establishment of regular conferences every ten years.1 October 1897 Edition of 'Our Own Magazine: A Church Monthly for the People'. The front cover contains the phrasing "registered as a newspaper" directly under the 'O' of "Our" though has been categorised as a magazine. Printed in black and white, the 10 page (not including covers) contains several advertisements for local Bendigo businesses. The cover showcases a hand drawn image of a robed man holding a ribbon "For God and His Church". The back cover shows a large black and white image of Enterprise Baking Powder. Other images include logos for local business and an ornate header on the front page. There are also ornate drop caps throughout the publication. The magazine includes articles pertaining to The Pope, the Lambeth Conference, Alexander Mackay of Uganda, the death of W. Walsham How (Bishop of Wakefield, C of E), the establishment of a press committee by the Anglican church, summaries of important sermons, mission notes, Parish news, baptisms, marriages and deaths.
