DH59 - Diesel Hydraulic locomotive (formerly DH 31), 1970
DH31 - DH59 Diesel Hydraulic locomotive Built to 3'6" gauge in 1970 this Diesel Hydraulic locomotive entered service for the Queensland Railways where it remained until withdrawn in 1994. Purchased by the E.T.R.B. in 1995, it was converted to 2'6" gauge in Queensland and transported to Belgrave in 1996 for overhaul. It re-entered service later in 1996, although instead of receiving a V.R. type classification & number and V.R. style livery, it retained its Q.R. number of DH59 and its Q.R. livery minus the Q.R. logo, but has since been repainted the traditional Blue & Gold of V.R. diesel locomotives and reclassified DH31. It has since been returned to DH 59. The DH class was a class of diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by Walkers Limited, Maryborough for Queensland Railways between 1966 and 1974. In 1966 Queensland Railways tested a Walkers Limited built diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive. This was later purchased and by 1974 the 73 DH class locomotives had taken over shunting duties in most Queensland yards. They were also used on short distance freight services. With the closure of many freight yards and the move to longer trains withdrawals started in the 1980s. Many were sold for further use on Queensland sugar cane railways. Nos. 7-23 were 5-compartment side loading cars, built from 1906-1915. Nos. 24-27 were the former NAB class cars mentioned previously and were also side loading, having 6 compartments and two ladies toilets. Rescued by the Puffing Billy Preservation Society from Ocean Grove Victorian in Nov 2010 Nov 2010 Two carriages have been rescued from Ocean Grove where they had been built into a house. They are now at Emerald, one being a platform NB carriage and the other a swing door NB carriage. Storage of these vehicles is being considered. Many people were involved in the move: thanks go to Raymond and Thelma Cotter for providing tarps to protect the cars from the elements. Dec 2010 Two carriages rescued from Ocean Grove are now at Emerald, one being a platform NB car (6NB) and the other a 2nd Class swing door carriage. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. One man lost his life during the building of this bridge. The bridge was constructed by the Victorian Railways between 1927 to 1929 to carry a new double track goods line. This enabled trains from all parts of the state except Gippsland to have direct access to the Tottenham marshalling and sorting yards. These yards were constructed in the 1920's to relieve congestion in the Melbourne Yard near Spencer Street station. The congestion was being caused by the construction of suburban passenger platforms associated with the electrification of the suburban railway network. Initially the bridge was for goods trains but during the Second World War it was also used by troop trains. When the standard gauge line was built in 1962 all trains to Albury and Sydney have used this route, thus avoiding travelling through Essendon and Pascoe Vale on the suburban tracks. The standard gauge track across the bridge took the place of one of the broad gauge tracks so broad gauge trains crossing the bridge in either direction have to now use the same track. The bridge is 1,257 feet (383.13 metres) long and 180 feet (54.86 metres) above the water level. It is just 63 feet (19.2 metres) short of a quarter mile in length between abutments. There is a similar bridge on the same railway line crossing the Moonee Ponds Creek between Gowenbrae and Glenroy, however it is smaller at 1060 feet (323.08 metres) length and 115 feet (35.05) height.The bridge is now Victorian Heritage Registered under Number: H1197, and Heritage Overlay Numbers HO5, and HO107. On the Heritage Register it is named RAIL BRIDGE (ALBION VIADUCT). According to the Heritage Report the bridge is scientifically and architecturally important because of its large size, and because of the cost effective design features such as two girders per span (one for each track), the K bracing in the towers, and the broad flange beams as columns. When it was being built it was the largest trestle bridge in Australia, and until the Sydney Harbour bridge was constructed it was the highest railway bridge.Five B&W yellowing photos showing stages of construction of the Maribyrnong River Viaduct known as the Trestle Bridge but mainly known locally as the QUARTER MILE BRIDGE. Hellfire Corner was a junction in the Ypres Salient in the First World War. The main supplies for the British Army in this sector passed along the road from Ypres to Menin - the famous Menin Road. A section of the road was where the Sint-Jan-Zillebeke road and the Ypres-Roulers railway line crossed the road. A photo of 6 boys with a trolley of suitcases at Spencer Street Railway Station, Melbourne (since renamed Southern Cross Station). They have arrived from country towns to attend Legacy Somers Camp in January 1973. It came from an envelope with other camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The envelope contents are items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. Original features photos of Ballarat City and Town, its buildings, parks and the various industries and organisations that were in Ballarat at the time of publication, including ESCo. Many photos features ESCo trams. Photos sepia toned. Has some red colour block printing on the front cover and rear, for Star Oil Engines. Photo of SEC Ballarat No. 14 and possibly No. 42 (Briquette roof advertisement and features on the same special trams in Reg. item 2064) waiting in Lydiard St. North for the arrival of the ARHS special on Saturday 21/8/1971 to undertake the last tour of Ballarat Tramways, prior to the closure of the system. The first line closure (Victoria St.) took place the following day. Has Reid's Coffee Palace building in the background and other buildings on the east side of Lydiard St. North. Two other single truck cars in the photo as are the railway gates at the station. Yields information about the tram timetables applicable to Melbourne's trams, including cable and electric and demonstrates the spread of Melbourne's public transport system in the early 1920's.Forty Eight page printed book contained with oversize green heavy paper covers centre stapled with a coloured map glued into the rear cover of the book titled "OSBA Tram Time Tables with Railway and Tramway Map, of Melbourne and Suburbs". Published c1920 - shows Footscray system, Victoria St Flemington link, does not show Puckle St. Timetables details Fares, first and last cars for cable and electric lines, sections and other details of the various lines. Note page 44 and 45 cannot be accessed, paper not cut correctly during the printing process - leave as is. Map prepared by Gawler and Drummond Architects, shows in colour the cable routes, electric tramways, authorised tramways and railway lines. Municipalities shown in different colours. The drawing is very detailed showing streets, cross streets, route, loops, schools, woollen mills, ovals, sections, track phones, stops, route and track miles, pedestrian crossings, railway stations and notes on through route mileages.Print of a drawing showing in very good detail, the schematic layout of the Geelong Tram system. Produced in 1953 and sent to Tramway Supt. in 1970 for his records. Gives very detailed information on another SEC tramway system.Dyeline print of SEC Drawing No. GE-T13-8829, titled "Schematic Diagram Geelong Tramway Routes". Drawing prepared 27/8/1953. Stapled to the top right hand corner of the sheet is a SEC memo form from finance section, distribution services to the Dept. Tramway Superintendent, Ballarat, dated 6-2-1970 forwarding Les Denmead the plan. Was unstapled during the 1/2008 copying of the drawing. On top right hand corner of drawing, "Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society Catalogue No. 605" in ink and on rear in two places "Geelong Tramways" and one "BTPS 605"geelong, map, track layout, tram stops
