Despite initially losing his farm and then a colour printing business he went on to form W.D. Joynt & Co which began by printing advertising and moved on to general printing, ultimately becoming one of the three largest paperback printers in Australia. in 1976, due to the then economic difficulties in Australia, the company went into receivership, but managed to trade its way out and eventually printed most of Mills & Boon's popular romance series. In 1981 the company became part of the McPherson Group of Companies and Joynt retired. His qualities of leadership, persistence and business acumen were of great benefit to Melbourne Legacy. Letter dated 29 November 1973 from (Legatee) A. Quale, Chairman, Residences Committee, to Legatee H.C.G. Rodgers appointing him to the Steering Committee (Residences) and laying out the terms of reference, and the investigations to be undertaken in order make recommendations about the future of the Melbourne Legacy residences. A first hand account written by Legatee Ashley Dore (VX 42841, 1918-1986) of the efforts of the Australian soldiers who elected not to surrender and who hid in the jungle intending to make their way to the coast and find a boat to New Guinea. Dore has written an engrossing account of the difficulties and privations they face, ultimately arriving in Pondo where they rejoined other troops under the command of Captain Appel who was able to get them to Rein Bay and finally Cairns. Dore had a civilian career with AMP in positions of increasing responsibility and became a Legatee on 9th September 1958. He was also Assistant District Commissioner in the Boy Scout Association. His financial acumen led to him becoming Honorary Treasurer of Melbourne Legacy after only three years of membership, and he was appointed President in 1965. Ill health curtailed his activities in 1970 and he died at the relatively early age of 67. A vivid account of the wartime experiences of a Melbourne Legacy President which exemplifies the type of person who was invited to become a Legatee. This is a programme of a greyhound racing meeting held in Warrnambool in August 1975. The meeting was held in Botanic Park, in Botanic Road Warrnambool opposite the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. Today greyhound racing meetings in Warrnambool are held in Koroit Street on a track in the Warrnambool Showgrounds and the Botanic Road site is now the location of a Catholic Primary School. This programme is retained as a memento of the 1970s when the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club meetings were held in a park in Botanic Road, Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet of 16 pages. The cover is yellow with black printing and an image in red of a greyhound and a map of Victoria. The programme has been stapled but the staples have been removed.
