Photograph - Black and White, Richards & Co, Ballarat Junior Technical School; Scholarship and Studentship Winners, 1919
Scholarships and Studentships played a very important role in schools of the day. Many families had to make sacrifices to enable their sons to remain at school. The addition of a third year to the junior technical course added to the burden. The main difficulty was the fee of one pound per term for students over the age of 14. There were 4 terms per year making it an expensive undertaking. Many working class boys, and they were in the majority at technical schools, had to seek employment as soon as they reached the age of 14, the statuary leaving age. Because of these financial obstacles, scholarships played an important role in the schools of the day.Black and white studio photograph of 15 boys, sitting or standing.Back of photograph: "Richard & Co Ballarat Photographers" stamped with additional stamp "Proofs not returned charged for" Inpencil; "Jr Tech. Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Photograph, logging at McKay Creek, 1949/50
This photo was most likely taken at the site of the proposed McKay Creek Power Station. Excavation of this site was commenced in 1951 but an access road (a rough, narrow track) was put it in 1948 and widened in 1954. The State Electricity Commission would have milled logs from this area at their mill at Howman's Gap. The timber was used for building of housing and camps and provided a much needed resource as there was a general shortage of this commodity. The power station was relocated underground owing to repeated problems with landslides in the area. Restricted financial resources and the repositioning of the power station retarded construction activities and it was not completed until early 1961. An historical pictorial record of the type of machinery used in the 1950's - logging truck with bogie attached, the bull dozer and winch for hauling logs to the truck and note the lack of protective clothing!Black and white photograph showing a logging truck, bogie and bull dozer with winch for hauling the logs to the truck. 7 small black and white photographs of Pretty Valley, c1948
In 1947 it was proposed to construct a dam on the Pretty Valley branch of the East Kiewa River. This was part of the initial planning in 1937. The Pretty Valley Reservoir was to be part of a pumped-storage scheme with a pumping station located immediately below the main structure. Preparatory work was commenced in 1946 with erection of staff accommodation. Between 1947 and 1950 the main camp was erected, access roads, constructed and banks and benches at the dam site undertaken. Following the financial crisis in 1951, a review of the scheme was carried out and work ceased in June 1951. Construction of the dam was deleted from the programme of works and all buildings removed.A pictorial history of part of the initial planning in 1937 for a dam to be constructed at Pretty Valley as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.7 small black and white photographs of Pretty ValleyAll photos have a circular stamp on the back with 'Print by Willson White Albury' enclosed. Book - Hospital Auxiliary Minute Book, Secretary of Allans Forest Red Cross Hospital Auxiliary, 1925-1930
This book contains the Minutes and financial details from the Allans Forest Red Cross Hospital Auxiliary from 1925 to 1930. Allans Forest is a small locality on the Great Ocean Road about three kilometres from the township of Allansford on the eastern fringe of Warrnambool. The Hospital Auxiliary was formed as an extension of the Allansford group in 1925 to provide support for the Warrnambool and District Hospital. The group raised funds with dances and jumble sales and donated to the hospital such items as groceries (especially home made jams and soaps), hospital linen and baby wear. The hospital would provide tins of fat for the ladies to make the soap. This exercise book is of interest as a memento of the activities of a small group in a small settlement in the Warrnambool area nearly a hundred years ago. It shows the reliance in the past of a town hospital on local groups to provide basic items such as food and linen. This is an exercise book with a dark red cardboard cover and black binding on the spine. The pages have ruled black lines and handwritten entries in ink. Some pages are blank.Allan's Forest Red Cross Hospital Auxiliaryallans forest, warrnambool and district hospital, allans forest red cross -

Photograph - Cosy Five Roomed Rough Cast Bungalow, Kew, J E Barnes, c.1920
Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. The photograph is also aesthetically significant as it was taken by J. E. Barnes, a nationally significant photographer. He was the most important photographer to have worked in Kew. He was active as a photographer in the district from c.1906 until his death in 1921. Best known as 'the Embarkation Photographer' (see the Australian War Memorial collection), Josiah Earl Barnes was also the official photographer employed by the Borough (and later Town, then City) of Kew. He clearly also completed commercial jobs for local businesses, as is the case in this photograph of a house for a local real estate and financial agent. A modest weatherboard house with rough-cast rendered walls. The gabled entrance incorporates elements of the Japanese aesthetic. The strong lines of the dark timber gable are reinforced by the colour and shape of the pickets in the fence. In contrast to an earlier period, the chimneys appear truncated. The use of extensive double-hung sash windows in the front rooms reflects a new interest in light in houses. The use of separate sunshades over windows in an earlier period is here replaced by an extension of the roofline over the window. The photographer Josiah Barnes died in 1921; so, the photograph of the house must predate this date. The location of the house, which was advertised for sale, has to date not been identified. From the foreword: " ... a factual account of how the Communist Party is undermining the Australian nation. It explains how it is controlled. Its General Staff. Its penetration of the unions.
