Photograph - J. Mann & Son, 1924
J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006.This photo is representative of a highly respected local Wodonga business which operated in the CBD for 85 years.A black and white photograph mounted on heavy card. Photograph - Portrait - Graham Middleton, Rob Elliott, 1993
Graham Wells Middleton was born in Corryong in Northeast Victoria in 1935. He was the first person to swim the length of the Murray River. He began on November 30th 1991 at Bringenbong, near Corryong. After completing a distance of 2366 kilometres over 138 consecutive days, Graham finished his marathon swim in Lake Alexandrina, South Australia on April 14th 1992. This feat was recognised in The Guiness Book of Records and was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Corryong. His motivation was to raise money to help children with cancer. In the process he raised $100,000 for cancer research which made Graham Middleton the first individual in Australia to raise $100,000 for the cause. In the weeks and months after his swim ended, donations continued to be made, with the final total exceeding $200,000. The proceeds raised by the swim were donated to " Kids 'n' Cancer" and the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. Graham Middleton died on October 27, 1995This photo is significant as Graham Middleton was a resident of Northeast Victoria who made an outstanding contribution to the community and to supporting medical research as a result as the Murray River swim depicted in this image.A black and white photo of Graham Middleton, a marathon swimmer who swam the Murray River. Medal - 1914-1918 WW1 medal, 1919
This medal was awarded, posthumously to Pte. Dash. He was born in Burwood(a small town near Sydney). He joined the Army 12/6/1915. Strangely, he did his medical inspection in May. He is listed as being in 1st Battalion from 18 May until 5 August. 6th August he arrived at the Battalion (on the Gallipoli Peninsular). He was wounded 7 August, whilst delivering ammunition, by machine gun with wounds to the neck and shoulder. From there, there was no record of him and was catergorised as Missing in Action". His father received notification with scroll 21/12/21. He received his Victory Medal Jan 18 1923. Pte Dash is interred in the Lone Pine cemetery, in Turkey. He was originally interred in Brown's Dip cemetery, but this site was deemed unsuitable for cemetery due to the changing landscape due to flood waters. Pte Dash was discovered in Lemnos, convalesencing after being hospitalised, 1st October 1915. However the board of inquiry made no mention of his sighting in Lemnos. He was interred in Gallipoli, so the sighting in Lemnos appears to be a mistake.British World War 1 Medal issued to Australians Round 36 mm Ribbon Royal Blue/Black/White/16 mm orange/White/Black/Royal Blue The Observse side is a bust of the King (George V). City of Kingston
Photograph - Colour, 6 March 1993
Edithvale is a suburb in the City of Kingston. It is located between Aspendale and Chelsea on the Port Phillip Bay and built within remnant areas of the Carrum Carrum swamp. The foreshore precinct comprises a wide sandy beach, with low sand dunes and numerous historic boat sheds. The suburb consists of older style dwellings and former holiday houses, combined with mid-century housing and newer homes. The large blocks are increasingly subdivided and the existing dwellings demolished to accommodate units and townhouses, thus changing the landscape of the area and reducing the tree canopy. The beachside suburb of Edithvale was previously part of the extensive Carrum Carrum Swamp. The area was once a source of fish and eels for the Mayone-Bulluk clan of the Bunurong people. Over time the area was drained and predominantly devoted to dairy farming and holiday houses. The farms were gradually sold and subdivided with a large number of homes built after World War II and in the 1960s. Edithvale is mainly residential with a shopping strip along Nepean Highway but little significant industry was ever established in the area apart from a plaster works and confectionary factory, both now closed.Laminated aerial colour photograph of Edithvale as viewed from Alexandra Avenue in the north to Ella Grove Chelsea/Edithvale in the south. regents Park Aspendale can be seen in the top left. The area is built-up with residential housing and facilities including Edithvale Primary School, numerous churches and the Edithvale Railway station. Large sections depict the remnant Carrum Carrum swamp. Edithvale Common and the former "Duck Inn" (Melbourne Water/Friends of Edithvale Seaford Wetlands) can be seen. Edithvale Recreational reserve, the valodrome and Edithvale Public Golf Course are prominent. The image shows vacant land in the area now known as Aspendale Gardens and the newer residential section of Chelsea Heights is not developed. A bike path has been established to cover the secondary drain. The Golf Links Court residential development located off Hughes Avenue is a large vacant block.Black type on white adhesive label: 6-3-93 Black type on white adhesive label: 25/9211, 6/3/93, 11.20 am Black type on white adhesive label: 9211 Yellow circular adhesive sticker Black pencil: 9211 6-3-93 arrow pointing Nedthvale, carrum carrum swamp, aspendale, chelsea -

Cheltenham is a suburb in the City of Kingston that was originally established as a rural market gardening community. The area is bordered by Highett, Mentone and Heatherton. The market gardens, farms and paddocks have gradually been sub-divided into housing and industrial estates. The Southland shopping centre is a major feature of the area.Cheltenham was established as a rural market gardening community. The Le Page family lived in Cheltenham since 1854 when Nicholas Le Page, a tailor from the Channel Island of Guernsey, bought two acres of land on Chesterville Road near Bernard Street to establish a market garden. Over the years the Le Pages purchased more land in the area. In 1875-76 Nicholas' son Frank and his wife Mary built 'Daphne Cottage' near the corner of Bernard and Wilson Streets. n the 1940s Frank's son, Everest Le Page, bought five more lots of land in Chesterville Road from the Tuck family. The Le Pages grazed horses, ponies and cows on this land, and grew pumpkins, carrots, parsnips, onions, potatoes and cabbages. Many buildings and locations within in Cheltenham commemorate the Le Page family's contribution to the Cheltenham community.Aerial photograph taken in 1945 of the Cheltenham district within the City of Kingston. The image includes Chesterville Road, the future site of Turner Road pool (now Waves) and Highett Reserve, (top left), Jellicoe Street, Argus Street, Bernard Street, Wilson Street, the Methodist Children Homes (now Southland), McIvor Street, Goulburn Street, Nepean Highway, Jamieson Street and Barker Street (bottom left), market gardens and paddocks. In the top centre of the image, "Daphne Cottage", the home of Frank T. Le Page is visible on the corner of Bernard and Wilson Streets. Much of the land depicted in this image was owned by the Le Page family.
