The Art Directors Club Annual Awards began in 1921. They celebrate "the artistry and craftsmanship that is synonymous with beautiful advertising and design". At the 81st Awards in 2002, Ballarat University won gold. This is the first time an Australian University has been recognised. Soldier's Pay book continuation issued to John Strobel Green VX32816. Born at Wonthaggi on the 19/4/1913. These books were usually carried by the soldiers in their battle dress breast pocket. They note personal details, rate of pay and promotions, and the place in which the soldier was paid each fortnight – effectively plotting soldiers' movements in the Army. From the pay book GREEN enlisted in June 1940, at the age of 27, before embarking overseas on 5 February 1941 for the Middle East. Inside the rear cover are two photographs of GREEN. The Sunshine business area has undergone major change from industrial manufacturing to retail. This aerial photograph shows the industrial areas that existed on both sides of Hampshire Road in 1982, and which have since been replaced by two shopping centres and the library building. The photograph also shows the old swimming pool, and retail outlets that no longer exist such as Waltons, Clark Rubber, Fosseys and the original Safeway store. It also shows a vacant land where the current Centrelink office now exists. "Over the years the VR Advertising Division published a number of booklets promoting Mount Buffalos winter sports and the restorative powers of its scenery in summer and winter." (Pg 119. Historica) This booklet provides a brief history of the Chalet and features excerpt from a speech by Dr Wilkinson. The beautiful graphic illustrates a tale of the Manfield brothers communicating nightly by fires to family in the valley. The artist is possibly James Northfield or Percy Trompf, whose lithographic posters and promotional material for the Railways were iconic of the time and promoting tourism in Australia was an important National enterprise. This publication was produced in the early 1950s to provide the growing tourism trade (at this time), to the region with a more detailed overview of the facilities available to tourists of the region's attractions. This brochure is a very efficient and effective promotional publication. The increasing level of self promotion by local business and commerce sectors of the region the more sought after the region became and the greater the ability of the region to grow (non rural based economy). Some of the regions unique facilities and geological structures are well suited to those tourists who live in cities and "flat land" regional bush areas within Australia. This was a period when the average Australian domestic tourist was more able (finance and transport wise) to see more of their country within the short time they had for "holidays". In the late 1900s, however, with the increase to workers' recreational leave and better transportation (fares, ease of travel to overseas destinations) the local tourism numbers from other domestic locations have been steadily declining. From the 1970s onwards, the increased tourism demand from overseas tourists, for better facilities and easier access to these regional facilities, resulted in better transport, accommodation and communication, which has been a boon for all tourism within Australia. In the 21st century the world is becoming smaller and smaller for the international tourist, especially for those from crowded Asian cities. The greater attraction for "open" spaced locations such as this region are becoming a much sought after change of scenery. This pamphlet which targets the tourist, whether either from other Australian regions or the global tourist, is a good example of self promotion by a relatively small local population. This is especially significant because before the "tourist explosion" in the 1950s onward, these regional areas had a more introspective society with greater emphasis to locally established mores and values. The increased interactions with people from other areas and nations, combined with a greater global communication network is affecting those traditionally established mores to produce a some what unique social transformation which is constantly changing from one generation to the next. One important factor which tourism does bring is that it opens up the region to a wider range of people who look to the region for their own lifestyle changes.This pamphlet has a front cover in colour with the major activities in the region sketched depicting : sunshine, snow skiing, trout fishing, mountain climbing, golfing, swimming, alpine views, tennis, lawn bowls and picnics. The back cover is blank. The pamphlet is fastened together by two staples 30mm from top and bottom, and is folded with the cover slightly thicker than the fifteen pages. Herbert A Leighton was an actor and Elocution teacher, known widely in the Eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. However all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he purchased expensive jewellery and clothes for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money knowing it was stolen. Investigations by the Perth police showed that Leighton was really Norman Campbell who had been born in Gippsland. He had worked as a clerk in the Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role in the Sydney Savings Bank. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery, a crime he spent seven years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton, actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo. .Large format scrapbook collated by D H Leighton. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The East Kew Tramway Estate was a subdivision of two separate parcels of land between Adeney Avenue and Normanby Road. The larger section included 54 lots facing Adeney Avenue, Argyle Road, and Campbell, Hunter and Wishart Streets. [Hunter and Wishart Streets were created as part of the subdivision.] A further 17 allotments faced Normanby Road, Hubert and Campbell Streets. [The name of Hubert Street was later to be changed to Cecil Street.] The promotion of the sale referred to the advantages of living between two tram routes, in High Street and Cotham Road. This cookbook was produced by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums, partly as a fund-raiser and partly as a promotional exercise. A Pipe Band was formed in Warrnambool in 1906 with twelve foundation members. Simon Fraser was the original Pipe Major and the band has had some changes of name since its foundation. The band was not operating for some time during the years of World War One and again during World War Two but today under the name of Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums it performs at concerts, dinners, band competitions, official functions, street parades etc and has won both Victorian and interstate Championship titles. This book is of interest as an example of a fund-raising exercise by a local organization early in the 21st century. This is a soft-cover book of 94 pages. It is a cookery book published by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. It has a blue cover overlaid with plastic and is bound with plastic rings. This miniature cash tin was produced by Fry's Chocolate Company of England as a promotional giveaway and probably held some chocolate samples. It would then have been used in a household for keeping trinkets or other small items. The Fry's Chocolate Company was established in Bristol, England in the mid 18th century by Joseph Fry and in the mid 19th century it produced the first mass-produced chocolate bar (1866 - Chocolate Cream, 1913 Turkish Delight). The company merged with the Cadbury company in 1919 and the Tasmanian Cadbury factory which opened in 1921 was known as Cadbury-Fry-Pascall. Fry's chocolate bars were very popular in Australia. This item is retained as a memento of Fry's Chocolate Company, the products of which featured in Australian life for many decades. This is a rectangular metal tin painted black and light brown. It has a hinged lid and a metal handle held with clips inserted into slits on the top of the lid. This corkscrew has obviously been used as a promotional handout for clients of James McGee and Co. Information on this firm has been difficult to find but there was a well-known commercial traveller, James McGee, resident in the Warrnambool district at the end of the 19th century and it is known that his sons headed a company, James McGee and Co. that bought Sheldrick’s New Brewery in Timor Street, Warrnambool, in 1894. This brewery had been founded in 1868. In 1922 the McGee company sold the goodwill of the Warrnambool brewery to the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-Operative and Carlton and United Breweries and the local brewery closed. No information has been found on Ballangarrock Whisky.This corkscrew is an important souvenir of the last few years of operations at the Warrnambool New Brewery in Timor Street. This book was hand made in Bendigo and presented to the Army Survey Regiment Sergeants Mess by WO2 Graham Squire (Later WO1 RSM RASvy). The book is to record events when the Sgts Mess Bell was rung, signaling that money was put over the bar for those present. Events such as promotions, departures, birthdays, birth of children and grandchildren were celebrated in this way and hence recorded in this book. David Lancashire's Christmas promotion 'Hallelujah', designed for KW Doggett Fine Paper in 2009, is an example of one of the many innovations that Lancashire has contributed to the Australian paper industry. Considering the celestial aspects of Christmas and a favourite song - Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' - Lancashire recalled a Wayang Kulit shadow puppet collected in Bali because of the way it interacted with light. Made from hide, the puppet was peppered with hand-punched holes to add intricate decorations to projected shadows. He adapted this concept to laser-etched paper and translated the fringed skirt of the puppet to die cut angel feathers. A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Legacy President Philip Potts as he left to be part of the Scottish delegation in March 1928. Legatee Potts was the current Legacy President and this promotion meant he had to step down and Legatee CH Peters took over the rest of the 1927-8 tenure. The text of menu has joking references to other Legatees which shows their comradeship and camaraderie. An album of significant events in March 1928 was compiled and presented to Legatee Potts by Legatee Frank Doolan. (see 02134). The album includes the first annual demonstration, appeals for funds to build the Shrine and farewell notices from Legacy newsletters.A record that Legatees held very significant positions in their lives outside of Legacy. The Eureka A4 was invented in Melbourne by Milan Hudacek, and designed to capitalise on the growth of IBM PCs. It attached to the PC and allowed blind and vision impaired people to utilise screen orientated programs. It had a sockets for telephone lines, a Braille keyboard, an inbuilt disk drive, speed and volume controls as as well outlets for data ports and headphones. The Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind (now a part of Vision Australia) received both the Eureka Award and the Qantas Rolls Royce Award in 1990 for its participation in the development and promotion of the Eureka A4 computer. The “Axe Handle” awards originated in 1988, when WO2 Zachary Reark (CSM B Coy and son of famed Old Mentonian, Jim Reark) found an old axe handle in the bush at the end of the 1988 annual Cadet camp. This he proudly marched out of camp with, under arm, in the manner of one bearing a pace stick. This idea seemed to catch on with the then CO, LTCOL Tony Drinan who decided that each CSM would be issued with one of these as a “perpetual trophy” marking his promotion to the rank of WO2 and appointment as a CSM. The name of the recipient was duly engraved on a plate affixed to the handle. The Archive Centre holds about 12 such axes as well as this original.

This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Legacy invited Daryl Somers to be Personality of the Year in 1996 and again in 1997. He participated in many events to promote Legacy, including a parachute jump with Ron Barassi, a car raffle, lunches and comparing a night to remember (see 00853, 00854, 00997, 00056). The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. This envelope and its unknown contents were sent in 1937 to Fred Miller of Boughton Farm at Cassady's Bridge. west of Warrnambool. The envelope advertises an Annual Gala Week in Warrnambool from December 26th 1937 to January 2nd 1938. This was an event organized by the Warrnambool Progress Association as a tourist promotion exercise. The Secretary of the Association at the time was Martin Carter, a well-known Warrnambool saddler and local band conductor. The envelope also advertised the forthcoming Warrnambool Centenary Celebrations in 1939-1940 but these were not held because of the outbreak of World War Two. The Centenary celebrations were eventually held in 1947, a more appropriate year as Warrnambool was founded in 1847. This book was written and produced by Edward Vidler, Born in England, Edward Vider, a writer, publisher, journalist and editor, was in Geelong in the 1880s where he produce a commemorative volume of that city. In Warrnambool in the early 1900s Vidler was Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures and of the Warrnambool and District Progress League. In 1907 he produced ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. In 1907 he also organized the project that produced the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. Later Vidler lived in Melbourne where he edited magazines and published his own and other writings. He was interested in the promotion of the arts and was a keen naturalist. He was a foundation member of the group that established the Maranoa Native Gardens in Balwyn.These books are of the utmost significance as ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is a seminal work in the history of the Warrnambool – second only in importance to Richard Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887. ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is noted for the accuracy of Vidler’s research, its complementary value to Osborne’s history and its presentation of historically valuable material that might otherwise be lost. The photographs in the book are of excellent quality and of great historical value and continue to be scanned and copied today. The wine and spirits store in Fairy Street was established by Giffen Russell in 1878 and Harry Lynch took over the business in the 1930s. Harry Lynch died in 1953 and Kelvin Matthew Lynch became the proprietor, with the store known as K.M. Lynch Pty Ltd during the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st century. The business closed in the second decade of the 21st century. The item would have been used as a promotional tool, a useful household item given to the Lynch store regular customers and business associates. This display was the first of four displays over two weeks which was organised by Mrs. Connie Pannan from Nanda Binya Lodge in Marysville; Counselor Malcolm Reed from the Shire of Healesville and Marylyn Guest House in Marysville; Mrs. Val Cockerell from Blackwood Holiday Flats in Marysville; and Mr. Michael Cheshire from the Westernport Healesville Regional Tourist Authority. The display saw the release of a new full colour tourist brochure on Marysville produced with the co-operation of the Marysville Tourist and Progress Association and Westernport Healesville Regional Tourist Authority.
