The SEC's notice to abolish the trams was tabled in the Legislative Assembly for the second time in two years. Unless the SEC's notice was opposed in either during the next 24 sitting days, the trams will go. As Government has numbers in both houses, the trams will go, while two years ago, the Country and Labor Parties combined in the upper house to oppose this. Quotes Minister for Fuel and Power, Mr. Balfour about fares, would subsidise private bus operators to give concession fares as is done on the trams, separation or retrenchment payments for tramway employees, and mentions suggestion that trams should be retained as a tourist attraction. "So they've Decided to Scrap the Trams", "Two Escape Tram...The Courier Ballarat ...Yields information about the incidents/accidents that can occur on a street tramway system - collisions resulting in the rare virtual total demolition of a tram in Ballarat.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, front page, Thursday, 17 September 1970 with photo, of the collision between No. 20 and a semi trailer the previous evening in Victoria St. that wrecked No. 20. Gives quotes from eye witness, gives name of tram driver, Ian Maxwell Tierney, who jumped from tram before the collision, said the only passenger who was not injured was Miss Maree Bernadette Matthews about 17 of Reid St. Ballarat and the truck driver Ronald Frederick Cox 35 of Hickman St. was trapped in the cabin of the truck for some time. The tram No. 21 was "decorated by nurses and their friends". The tram was to publicise the hospital's $50,000 appeal until the end of May. Inspecting the tram in the photo were public relations officer, Mr. David Rees, Dr I.C. Goy and Mr. K.J.Neerhut with nursing staff members, SEC painters and carpenters who shared in the work.
