Container - Bottle, Pre 1974
Phenyle has been used for decades as a cleaner and disinfectant. It is well know for its use for cleaning outdoor toilets and easily identified by its strong odour. The brown glass bottle is immediately recognised as containing a poison. We've all seen them in a hundred different mystery movie scenes. The medicine cabinet opens and there, sitting on a shelf, is the incriminating object -- the ominous dark bottle with the skull and crossbones on the label. In off-screen reality, however, poison bottles have quite a different identity -- they are distinctive, varied, colorful -- and definitely collectible. Obviously, the one thing that sets the poison bottle apart from all other bottles is the need for prominent and immediate identification as a receptacle for toxic material, and this was achieved in a number of ways, including shape, color, embossing and labeling. Poisons were commonly found in the home for the purpose of controlling rodents and other pests, and were sold by grocers and druggists. For consumer protection, as far back as 1829, New York State made mandatory the marking of the bottles with the word "poison" in large letters. Then, in the middle of the 19th century, the American Pharmaceutical Association recommended legislation regarding identification of all poison bottles. In 1872 the American Medical Association also made recommendations -- namely that poison bottles be made of colored glass, and also have a rough surface on one side -- making them identifiable even in the dark -- and the word "poison" visible on the other (the skull and crossbones wasn't quite as ubiquitous as those movies led us to believe). However, passing these laws was not easy, and the manufacturers were essentially left to do as they wished. For collectors, the high point of poison bottle manufacturing was the period ranging roughly from the 1870s to the 1930s. At that time some, of the bottles were distinguished by particularly bright colors, such as cobalt blue (the most common) and emerald green. Others, particularly rare and collectible, had unusual -- and appropriate -- shapes, including skulls, leg bones and coffins. In order to better identify these lethal vessels by feel (not forgetting that there were many people in this period who could not read) when groping for them in the dark, they had such elaborate tactile patterns as quilted diamonds, lattices, hobnails and prominent vertical or horizontal ribbing, as well as spiky knobs and ridges. In addition, many had sharp points on top for the same precautionary purpose. Further efforts to distinguish poison bottles from others included uncommon multisided and triangular shapes, and unusual, hard-to-open tops, the predecessors of the modern child-proof openings. https://www.southcoasttoday.com/story/lifestyle/2001/08/19/poison-bottles-steeped-in-history/50352280007/The recognition and awareness of bottles containing poisonpous substances is extremely important for safety reasons.Bottle, brown glass, diamond shaped. Document - Report, Jet Probings, Warrnambool Harbour, 16-10-1929
This report lists the depths of water and the consistency of the seabed surrounding the Warrnambool Harbour in October 1929, The information, often referred to as 'soundings', was obtained by Jet Probing,. In earlier days a lead line was used to perform a similar task. The author of the document is unknown. Jet Probing is a method used for underwater archaeology, cable installation and coastal engineering. A jet probe is a machine that produces a strong jet of water that penetrates the layers of sediment on the seabed, determining their depth, thickness and consistency. It provides a survey of the seabed and can be used as an aid to engineering design and construction. The report mentions lining up with the wooden jetty, the end of the breakwater and the leading lights. It mentions sand, loose rock and rock. It tells of stopping work due to the water being too rough, the pipe choking, difficulty in connecting pipes, and pipe joint breaking as it tried to get through the sand, The report in the document is significant for its connection with the Warrnambool Harbour, Warrnambool Breakwater, Warrnambool Jetty and Lady Bay. The report gives figures for the depth and consistency of the water and seabed at a particular point in time and can be used to compart with similar figures taken at different times. The results could determine plans for future engineering works.Report, titled 'Jet Probings, Warrnambool Harbour'. Two pages of cream coloured paper with hand written notes in pen and ink. Report covers three days of Jet Probings, with resulting figures and comments, for the depths of the surroundings of the Warrnambool Harbour. The report is in point form, with some underlining. Dates of recordings are 14-10-29, 15-10-29 and 16-10-29. (1929) The situation of the harbour had become a real problem by 1910 and required continuous dredging. In 1914 the Breakwater was extended but proved to be a failure because the work began to subside and by 1920 about two thirds of the harbour was silted up. Alterations made in the 1920's increased the silting problem. The soundings and Jet Probings were done after the Royal Commission of 1923, when the damaged stonework on the seaward side of the Warrnambool Breakwater, caused by the action of the sea, was the subject of enquiry. A conference between the Public Works, Water Commission and the Harbour Trust concluded that it would less costly to make repairs to prevent further damage rather than replaced the damage portion of the wall. A contract was raised in late 1924 to deposit rubble on the damaged side of the breakwater to minimise the Southern Ocean’s destructive action and work had started by August 1925. By the 1940's the harbour was no longer used. More alterations were made in the 1950's and 1960's. document, depth, warrnambool harbour, 1929, soundings, jet probe, jet probing, seabed, map of seabed, underwater engineering, warrnambool jetty, warrnambool breakwater, breakwater upgrade, leading lights, chart the harbour, flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum & village, maritime museum, maritime village, shipwreck coast, lady bay, port of warrnambool, breakwater, jetty, pier, vhr h2024, royal commission, 1923, public works, water commission, harbour trust, victorian harbours -

Book, Unemployment, inflation & taxes on land, 1982
This book details the problems caused by the low level of land tax in Victoria. It was written by Dr Les Hemingway who was a fitter and turner who studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and came to Warrnambool in 1958. He replaced Dr Etheridge in a Liebig Street practice. He retired in the mid 1990s. His book on the land tax question was influenced by the writings of the American journalist/philosopher, Henry George. This book is of interest as it was written in 1982 by Les Hemingway, a local Warrnambool doctor who practised in Warrnambool for over 30 years. This is a soft cover book of 152 pages. The cover is buff-coloured with a collage of black and white photographs on the front cover and a summary of the book on the back cover. There is black lettering on the cover and spine. The cover is a little torn and shows evidence of silverfish damage. The book is bound with three metal staples.economic history, history of warrnambool, dr les hemingway -

Meat Safe, Household, Early 20th century
This meat safe has no known local provenance but it would be typical of the safes used in a domestic situation to house fresh meat. Usually the safe was hung in a house corridor or verandah or outside in a cool place where there was a breeze that passed through the mesh and kept the contents cool. The mesh also prevented flies and other insects from getting into the safe. Meat safes were widely used in Australian homes in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century, sometimes in conjunction with ice chests, until they were replaced by refrigerators. This item is retained for display purposes as an example of domestic food preservation in Australia 80 to 100 years ago. This is a metal box with a rectangular-shape base and a semi-circular top. All sides except the top and the bottom are made of fine metal mesh. The front is reinforced with metal strips and has a metal clip. The curved top is ridged and has a metal clip. The safe is somewhat rusted and damaged. Badges, Volunteer Cadet Corps, Late 19th century
These are badges or pieces of insignia that would have been worn on the collar or cap of members of the Victorian Volunteer Corps. This organization was formed in Victoria in 1867 with the object of fostering in young men leadership, discipline, loyalty and initiative through training programs and community service. The Victorian Volunteer Corps was established in Warrnambool in 1868 and units were initially based at the Warrnambool State School and the Warrnambool Grammar School. Later groups were formed in other schools and competed against each other in rifle shooting competitions, marching and parade skills etc. The Warrnambool groups were trained and assisted by members of the local adult Volunteer Corps. Today cadet groups are sponsored by the Australian Army and there is revived interest in Warrnambool in school cadet groups. These insignia items have no known local provenance but are of historical interest as mementoes of the Volunteer Cadet Corps that operated in Warrnambool from the late 1860s through to the early 20th century. .1 This is a bronze-coloured metal badge with gold lettering, a crown on top, a cross with stars in the middle section and laurel leaves around the outer edges. The two clips at the back are for attachment of the badge to a collar or cap. .2 as above except that this badge has been damaged and somewhat flattened.
