The Pelican is commonly found throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and Western Indonesia. The large throat pouch plays an important part in the diet of this species. The bill enables the Pelican to locate fish in murky water because of its sensitivity and it also has a hook at the end of the upper mandible which is used for gripping slippery foods. Pelicans work together large flocks to catch food by driving fish into one location by using their large bills and by beating their wings. A wild Pelican may live between ten to 25 years or more. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This set of kitchen dry food canisters is made of metal; each container has a different height, width and capacity. The rolled thin metal has created a strong, round design with decorative rings on the circumference. The base and close-fitting lid protect the contents from vermin and most insects, and the handle on top aids in the removal of the lid. Metal containers like these are reusable and can be re-purposed, which is advantageous when living in regional or rural areas. The type of manufacture indicates that the set was made in the late 19th to early 20th century. Gradually, colourful and attractive plastic kitchenware began to replace metalware. One of the canisters is labelled 'coffee'; coffee plants and seeds were transported from Brazil into Australia in 1788 when the First Fleet arrived although their growth was unsuccessful. However, by the 1920s, a tenth of the Australian population was drinking readily stored coffee. Large quantities of harvested grains such as maize, wheat and barley were protected from pests by being stored in airy buildings, often raised from the ground. This was an age-old practice used by civilizations such as the ancient Egyptians and early Hebrews. Smaller quantities of food for short-term use in the homes were stored in woven baskets or clay pots.This set of kitchen food containers is an example of colonial food storage used in a domestic setting to store and preserve dry ingredients. These canisters give a snapshot of early domestic life in Australia. Canister set; four cylindrical cream coloured metal canisters with domed lids that have lift-up handles on top. They are made from rolled metal and the bases and lids have a side seam. Each canister is a different size and displays a label for different contents. The adhesive labels are vertical, and a gold colour with black vertical text. The cream paint has brush strokes and small areas have exposed green paint under the cream. The insides of the bases are painted dark grey but the lids have no paint underneath. The empty canisters can fit one inside the other. This site was originally that of Cobb and Co's livery stable and although the Cobb and Co office in the Shamrock Hotel closed in 1886, the livery stable continued with the proprietors, Robertson and Wagner and Co. The site was bought in August 1898 by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Co, proprietors of the Bendigo Butter Factory. On this site the company built an ice tory, refrigerating works and cool storage for other businesses. The Bendigo Butter Factory was begun in 1894 in Lucan Street, opposite the distillery, by Mr McIntyre of the Rochester district. This site included a butter printer and Weigher supplied by Cherry and Son of Gisborne. In September 1895 the Butter factory was floated as a public company and was registered by Mr J H Curnow. However the factory was not financially sound at this point and entered into receivership in 1896. At this time it was bought by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company of Melbourne and was placed under the management of James Cumming, an experienced dairyman. The company had previously appointed him as their inspector of creameries. By 1911 he was the propietor of the Flora Hill Butter Factory. and was later killed in a car accident in May 1937. By 1919 the manager was Douglas Orson Oldfield (1868-1944) (NB at birth he was registered as Dugald and throughout his life he was also known as Dan).Colour photograph. Maj Smethurst has just refused to accept the presentation of the "Polar Medal" from the Ambassador, telling him he was going to receive it back in Australia with his wife and family present. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Crofts Stores (a chain of grocery stores) entered this float in the City of Moorabbin centenary procession held in 1962. Crofts had several stores in the City of MoorabbinCrofts Stores was established by Archibald Crofts with a single grocers store in South Melbourne. It eventually expanded to include 137 branches throughout Victoria, trading as Crofts Stores. Several Crofts stores existed in the City of Moorabbin and the chain pioneered self-service food stores in Australia. In 1962 the City of Moorabbin celebrated its centenary, which was marked with a procession through the streetsBlack and white photograph of a float being driven down a busy street. This label comes from the wine and spirits store of Harry Lynch and dates from about the 1940s. A wine and spirits store was established in Fairy Street, Warrnambool (116-118 today) by Giffen Russell in 1878. The business was still known as Giffen Russell and Co in the 1930s when Harry Lynch took over and was later known as Lynch’s store. Harry Lynch died in 1953. After Kelvin Matthew Lynch became the proprietor the K.M. Lynch Food and Liquor store operated under that name until its closure in the second decade of the 21st century. Manna Gum is a species of a small to a very tall tree that is endemic to south-eastern Australia. These particular trees are part of the Gawa Wurundjeri Resource Trail at Watsons Creek. Signs share information about how the Wurundjeri people lived near the creek and used the land to obtain bush foods, medicines, tools, shelter and clothes. The trail introduces visitors to the indigenous flora and fauna, including manna gums, Lomandra (used to weave baskets) and wombat burrows. The poster advertises the new ship "The Great Britain", built in 1852 and owned by the Eagle Line of steam packets, sailings between Australia and Liverpool, and other vessels owned by the company. The Great Britain was an iron screw steamer, 3,500 tons, & 500 horse power, built for the Eagle Line in 1852 and its Commander was B.L. Matthews. Passengers had a choice of accommodation; the After-Saloon, Fore-Saloon and Second Cabin. A scale on the poster lists the provision of food for each day of the week, for Fore-Saloon and Second Cabin passengers. The lists of agents English and Australian offices.The poster is significant for its connection to migration between England and Australia in the 1850's. The information includes the rationing of food on a daily basis to different classes of passengers, and the class distinctions made for accommodation, and provision made for children and servants. This sea urchin shell was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Casino (1882 – 1932) between the late 1960’s to early 1970’s. It is part of the John Chance Collection. The coastal trader SS Casino (1882–1932) had a run of almost 50 years along the coast of Western Victoria. She traded goods and food as well as carrying passengers from port to port on her many voyages. This vase may have been included in her cargo or could have been amongst the personal luggage of the people on board.The sea urchin shell is significant as an example of underwater animal life existing in Victoria the 1960s. It was recovered by John Chance, a diver from the wreck of the S.S. Casino in the 1960s-70s. Items that come from several wrecks along Victoria's coast have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. The urchin is connected with the S.S. Casino, which played an historical role in Western Victoria, providing transport, communication and trade along the coast between Melbourne and Portland in the late 19th and the early 20th century, visiting the ports at Apollo Bay, Warrnambool and Belfast (Port Fairy). The S.S. Casino was the only regular trader with normal passenger accommodation along the West Coast and the only Western District steamship that was in service between 1854 and 1939, and to be represented in the Victorian Heritage Shipwreck register, and to have been wrecked in the Western District, and to have the wreck located, and to be accessible to divers. The wreck of the S.S. Casino, and its associated relics, is considered an important part of Victorian and Australian cultural heritage and is now protected as a Historic Shipwreck under State and Commonwealth Law in the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976). This grinding stone (mortar) was used by Aboriginal people to grind or crush different materials such as berries and seeds for food production. In order to grind material, a smaller upper stone (the pestle) would have been used to grind material against this lower stone (the mortar). The stone was found by a farmer on land south of Donald in the 1950’s and was used as a door stop in the family home for many years. In the 1990's the stone was used by the farmer's grandaughter at her home at Swanwater West, to hold the lid down on an above ground swimming pool skimmer box. Stone

This safe came from the property “Fairview” Tungamah. Victoria. Fairview was owned and farmed by Charles and Nellie Nunn. The safe is at least 100 yrs old and served the family of parents and 12 children well by keeping food cool in the blazing summer days. Colour slide of a legatees in overalls in the bush to collect firewood having a break near a table of food. It was during Operation Firewood. Legatees would organise collection of wood from the country and distribute it to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Other slides show the cutting and loading of wood and delivery to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The women in the photograph were members of the Sunbury Red Cross in 1915 and was taken during the years of World War 1 at 'Rupertswood Mansion' one of the Clarke family's homes. Over those four years the local people supported the war effort in many ways. School children knitted garments for the soldiers, Food parcels were sent away to the Front. Local events were held to raise money for the war effort. Many events supporting the war effort took place at Rupertswood and the Sunbury Red Cross frequently gathered at the mansion.On the Homefront members of the Sunbury community worked tirelessly to support the war effort and leading this movement was the local Red Cross.A non-digital sepia photograph with a narrow cream border of a group of well-dressed women posing for a photograph in front of a large mansion. This item was used at a time when there was a limited range of spices available and sought after by domestic and commercial kitchens. The taste buds of the average Australian diner were limited to the basic English style dishes which had been delivered by the early colonial days. Rural areas where slower in experimenting with Asian and European cuisine. The influx of European cuisine from refugees fleeing both World War I and world War II brought a different appreciation of gourmet food. The increase in Asian spices was brought about by Australians becoming more aware of the Asian "scene" through the conflicts of Korean and Vietnam military action. The "standard" type spices such as Cinnamon, nutmeg and similar spices offered by Robert Harper and later other Food and Spices whole sellers and processors where a direct result of a greater influx of migrants from spices rich societies and resulted in a greater range of "Asian" spices This became more visible after demise of the "White Australian Policy" on immigration and the great media revolution of Televised cooking shows from the 1950s on. The sustainability of containers such as this re-useable tin and cardboard spice holder, which could be replenished and not thrown away after it was empty was it a time period well before the "throw away" society had crept into the Valley.This spice container was used mainly in domestic kitchen within the Kiewa Valley. Those European construction workers of the SEC Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme had brought their continental cuisine into the valley and that was the beginning of a new era in highlighting different tastes. This rural valley had a greater interaction with people from other nation's cuisines and by association became more infused with a broader range of spices and food preparations.This item (spice shaker) is constructed by using a thick cardboard cylinder with both ends closed by tin plated light steel lids. The bottom lid is not removable however the top lid is removable to allow the contents (Cinnamon Spice) to be refilled. The lid has thirteen small holes which allow the contents to be shaken out. The outer side of the cylinder has been covered (glued on) by a printed black and yellow label detailing contents , weight, and supplier.On the front side of the printed label outside of the label boundary is "To make a shaker of this tin - take the lid off and remove the paper from inside the lid" Within the marked horse shoe shaped boundary is" HARPER'S ground spices star brand" underneath "CINNAMON" underneath this is printed "1 oz. BHS CollectionGran Wearne was born in Cornwall in 1855. She married Thomas Wearne in 1878 and they migrated to Australia with two daughters after a stay in the USA. She has six children, but only three survived. In 1897 she lost her husband and had to depend on the community for food and clothing. She got some milking goats which supplied milk for the family and she was also able to sell some. Her surviving son lived with her. He was a miner like his father. In later years she got the age pension. She died in October 1936.
