Information from donor: "Item 2 has a long history and came to me two years ago when younger brother Pat downsized from Mentone to East Brighton. ... when mother Annie passed away [he] took possession of a roll top writing desk from the premises in which we grew up. To fit the desk in his new unit, the roll top was removed and this original manuscript was found. Silver fish have attacked the paper that is now perished but I was able to carefully obtain a photocopy and preserve a copy of Thomas Drenen's handwriting."Thomas Drenen was born 1861 and died in 1932. He was the editor of the local paper, The Rutherglen Sun, from 1886 until his retirement. This makes him unique in the opportunity to gather information on the history of the Rutherglen district. This manuscript was written by him for broadcast on radio station 3AR (which became a part of ABC Radio National). While the donor was not certain of the date of the broadcast, evidence from the document leads to the conclusion that it was between July 1927 and September 1928, as he mentions the recently opened Soldiers Memorial Hall (officially opened in July 1927) and the new Convent that was under construction (Mt Carmel Convent was officially opened in September 1928). The untimely death of Principal Keith Jones paved the way for the appointment of decorated Vietnam veteran Neville Clark who valued the School’s character-building ethos and, whereas Jones saw academic results and sport as paramount, Clark believed these were only part of the education of a well-rounded individual. To this end he extended the function of the House system which now had a leading role in pastoral care, rather than just being for sporting purposes. This is a map of the Hopkins River Estuary prepared by Dr John Sherwood for the benefit of anglers. The information on the sheet includes the location of sand banks, the water depths, boat ramp facilities and public access facilities. Some of the information has been gathered from aerial photographs. The map has been produced by the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education which was developed in the late 1960s from the tertiary section of the Warrnambool Technical College and with all its departments established by 1984 at the Sherwood Campus five kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. Today the site is occupied by Deakin University, Warrnambool campus. The Warrnambool Anglers’ Club has its headquarters on the banks of the Hopkins River near the mouth of the river and the Lyndoch Aged Care facility.This map is of interest as a specialist one, providing fishermen with detailed information on all aspects of the Hopkins river estuary. Fishing has been both a profession and a popular recreational pursuit for Warrnambool residents since the early days of the city’s settlement. The Hopkins River Estuary has been a focal point for fishermen throughout Warrnambool’s history. This is a sheet of paper folded three times to produce a folded map. The front cover has a black and white photograph of two fishermen with a large fish. The map of the Hopkins River Estuary is in yellow, blue and black and covers the side of one sheet and three quarters of the other side. There is an advertisement for the Hopkins River Boathouse with a black and white sketch of the boathouse and notes on the map written by Dr John Sherwood. This gold locket was presented to Thomas Edward Bostock on his retirement as Secretary of the Warrnambool Cricket Club on 1st August 1884. Thomas Bostock was a member of the Bostock family who had come from Tasmania to the Warrnambool district in the late 1840s. The Bostock brothers were prominent in the history of the area as pastoralists, shopkeepers, flour millers and Bond Store operators. They were all enthusiastic local cricketers. Thomas worked for the Bank of Australasia in the 1880s and was a keen footballer and cricketer. He moved to Geelong where he made his mark as a Councillor, Mayor and businessman, with several buildings and a street named after him. This item is of very high significance because:- 1. It is an attractive and valuable gold locket from Victorian times 2. It has strong local significance as it was presented in 1884 to a prominent Warrnambool man, Thomas Edward Bostock 3. It has considerable social significance, demonstrating the customs of the time of a man carrying a locket containing miniatures of personal interest to the bearer and of the presentation of such an object by a sporting club. This is a gold locket with a monogram of T.E. Bostock on the front and an inscription on the back. The locket has a small ring at the top so that it could be attached to a watch chain. These unusual china cups with elongated spouts were created in the days before drinking straws were common. Liquids and broth were fed through the spout to adults who were sick and could not take solid food, or to infants. The alternate name for these cups is “pap feeder.” Recipes for pap usually called for bread, flour and water. A more nourishing mixture “panada” was a pap base with added butter and milk, or cooked in broth as a milk substitute. Variations on the ingredients included Lisbon sugar, beer, wine, raw meat juices. These biscuits were supposedly issued to Jacob Perry when he served in the Boer War in South Africa in 1899. Jacob Perry was a member of an early family in Orbost and these biscuits were donated by George Perry. Hard tack biscuits were part of a soldier's individual ration in the Boer War and were so hard that they were often soaked in water before consumption if this was possible. Made of 13 parts flour to one part of water, the biscuits were slowly dried in the baking process, rendering them so hard that they deterred attacks from weevil pests and allowing them to be transported with little breakage. Hard ration biscuits were a staple of soldier's diets. The tea service originally consisted of cups, saucers, plates, teapots, basins and milk jugs. John Walker arrived in Hobart Town in 1822. Within a month he was appointed superintendent of the government flour-mill on the Hobart Town Rivulet. Next year he received a grant of 200 acres (81 ha) and in 1824 built a mill at Richmond. [Australian Dictionary of Biography] CH008.2 was a gift from the Right Reverend Gillam Albert McConnell (Pat) Wood to Jenny and John Preston while on their honeymoon. March 1967 Pat Wood was selling the very large dinner set to raise money for the restoration of the interior of the church. Henry Dendy (1800-1881) was an early settler of Eltham where he operated a flour mill. He donated land for the construction of St Margaret's Anglican Church. EDHS Newsletter No. 168 May 2006 Dendy is best known as the founder of Brighton, but it is not so well known that years later he lived at Eltham for far longer than he lived at Brighton. In 1840 while still in England he bought eight square miles of unspecified land in the Port Phillip District. This entitled him to bring a number of other persons to the colony and in 1841 he arrived at Williamstown in the "York" with his family and 139 others. He took up his land entitlement at what is now Brighton and most of the emigrants settled there. He encountered financial problems and lost his interest in the estate in 1844. He left Brighton in 1847. He successively but not always successfully became a brewer at Geelong, a sheep farmer at Christmas Hills and Upper Moira, a flour miller at Eltham; a sheep farmer again at Werribee and finally a copper miner at Walhalla. Dendy came to Eltham in 1856 after having spent a year in England. The total of the two parcels of land that he bought was about 5 acres (2 hectares) and it included the steam flour mill. . He became prominent in local affairs, serving for a time on the Eltham District Road Board, including one year as President. Dendy' s wife Sarah died at Eltham in 1860 and also in that year he was appointed chairman of a committee to establish a Church of England in Eltham. He donated one of his Pitt Street lots for this purpose and St Margaret's was opened in 1861. In 1867 Dendy sold his mill to W. F. Ford and moved to Werribee and then Walhalla where he remained until his death. He is buried in the Walhalla cemetery. No sign of Dendy's house or mill remain on the Community Centre site but some of the old trees running along the former boundary through the centre of the site could well have been planted in Dendy' s time. Much of this information was obtained from the book ''Henry Dendy and his Emigrants" by L.A. Schumer (Sallas Books 1975). This medal was presented by the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners' Royal Benevolent Society and was posthumously awarded to Captain John Coffey’s family for his efforts at saving life at sea, in 1882. Captain Coffey lost his life in this attempt. The shipwreck occurred between Australia and England. The included letter was written by the donor, who is the grandson of John Coffey. It is interesting that the medal and note were packaged in a small tin whose original purpose was to present a wedding cake gift to guests. The container is decorated with wedding bells pressed into the lid. Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society: - The Shipwrecked Mariners (Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society) is a national charity established in 1839. It is run by a network of volunteers in the UK and Ireland. The organisation assists former mariners, their dependants and their families. John Rye and his servant Charles-Gee Jones, of Bath, UK, encouraged its formation after a severe storm caused the loss of life from the ‘Clovelly’ fishing fleet in November 1838. The Society was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1850. The Society’s flag is the St George’s Cross, a red cross on a white background and a gold crown in the centre, with the letters S F M S displayed, one in each quadrant. Nominations are made by members each year of those who have performed outstanding acts of bravery in helping those in peril in the sea. The inscription on the reverse "PRESENTED FOR HEROIC EXERTIONS IN SAVING LIFE FROM DROWNING / JOB XXIX 13" refers to a verse in the Bible, which in the King James version reads "The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's eart to sing for joy."This is the only medal in our collection awarded from the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners' Royal Benevolent Society. The obverse of the medal has images of the British flag, a crown flag with "S.F.", a portrait of a man, a shipwreck, a cannon and anchor, a man with a telescope, and two people attending a body on the shore. The reverse of the medal has text. The medal clasp depicts a fleur de lies between two fish. The medal maker is Stokes. The metal was donated in a tin container and included a letter. The medal was presented posthumously to the family of Captain John Coffey for his efforts at saving life at sea, in 1882. Lila said there was no reason as to why she was saving the bags, other than she liked the art works and thought they were too good to end up in landfill. She had thought perhaps she would make something out of the bags, or perhaps give the bags to a friend to make something. These domestic kitchen bags were donated to the National Wool Museum by Lila Gore. Lila donated Children’s Clothing (RGE 8324) to the museum in 2022 and at her time of donating, inquired as to whether the museum would also be interested in these bags she had been collecting. Lila said there was no reason as to why she was saving the bags, other than she liked the art works and thought they were too good to end up in landfill. She had thought perhaps she would make something out of the bags, or perhaps give the bags to a friend to make something. When Lila was donating the Children’s Clothing to the museum, she thought that the National Wool Museum would be the perfect home for the bags. They were used at home, usually by women, containing household items which would not spoil, such as flour, sugar, animal feed, seeds, and other commodities. The locationn was a long time favourite spot for locals and visitors to fish and swim in the river. This is one of a series of four photographs that depict a mainly young group of people recreating in the area, particularly enjoying horse riding. Possibly weekend campers. This building was adjacent to Surrey Lodge, on the corner of Canterbury and Union Roads. The store was established by George Sim in 1885 and in 1889 he set up the 1st Surrey Hills Post Office here. The business was bought by Alfred Claude Geer in 1909; the Camberwell Rate books show that from 1913 Geer remained owner but the business was occupied by Alfred Henry Crump; confirmed by electoral rolls for 1913-1918. Prior to moving to Surrey Hills, Alfred was a grocer in Dandenong. Otto Kuhn was Alfred Crump's store manager and may have taken this photo. Alfred married Hazel May Ordish in 1913 in Dandenong. The marriage notice in the Argus on 5 July indicates that the couple resided at 'Hazeldene' in Leopold Crescent. Moran and Cato had already established a business across Union Road from McNeill's Hotel and in time this business and one other grocery store opposite closed as a result.Black and white photo of A H Crump's grocery and produce store in Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills in 1913. Cadbury's cocoa is advertised on the shop window. The hoarding above the verandah also indicates that the business was established in 1884. A Frank Sugg 'Court' tennis racquet with solid convex throat, and fine-grooved handle with fish-tail butt. Model and manufacturer's names impressed across the throat and along the shaft on the obverse, respectively. A circular cavity across the throat on the reverse may have contained a medallion featuring manufacturer's details, similar to the decal situated immediately below.
