It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. He sits outside a house reading a red coloured book, whilst in the background an elderly man takes a step out on to the gravelled driveway. Letter, F.E. Ferguson, Correspondence between Robert Reid & Co. Limited and Ballarat School of Mines, 20/05/1958 and 29/05/1958
Robert Reid & Co. Ltd was a textile, clothing and footwear retailer between 1919-1966. The company was bought be Joseph Pickles and Son in 1936. The Ballarat School of Mines began in 1870, and gradually developed to become an education institution. F. E Ferguson was the registrar at the time. The letter concerns the acquirement of the fabric Actil "Fasco" No. 49, which was out of stock and instead a sample of No. 57 was sent. This was not suitable for intended purpose. Two letters between Robert Reid & Co. Limited and Ballarat School of Mines. Both have pen annotations and signatures. The Robert Reid & Co. letter enclosed a piece of fabric, Actil "Fasco" No. 57Secretary marks include "Not suitable" Signatures from Registrar F. E Ferguson at Ballarat School of Mines and J. Thomas Jefferson Connelly played an important role in role in seeking support for the movement towards federation of the Australian colonies. Connelly was the first Bendigo born Mayor of Bendigo, and the youngest Mayor of Bendigo. He died in 1892 aged just 34. The portrait was painted by Robert William Bugg from a Bartlett Bros. photograph. It was unveiled in the ANA Hall in View Street by Alfred Deakin on October 18, 1893. A re-enactment of the unveiling was held at the Bendigo Art Gallery on October 18 1993. a. Three page typewritten outline of the speech given by John Quick. b. Handwritten script of Quick's speech used at the re-enactment. c. Handwritten script of Alfred Deakin's speech used at the re-enactment. d. Yellow paper bifold program for the Centenary of the Unveiling of the Portrait of Thomas Jefferson Connelly. The part of John Quick was played by Robert Lloyd. The part of Alfred Deakin was played by Robert Jealous. The back page contains a Timeline of the life of Connelly who served on the City Council, including one year as Mayor (1888 - 1889). e. Alan Martin studied under Max Meldrum, at the National Gallery School and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He later established his own art school. He has won several prizes and is represented in several provincial collections. Alan Marshall was the author of more than fifteen books, and lived much of his life in Eltham. He became a central figure in the area's arts community of writers, artists, sculptors, film makers, actors and musicians. He contracted polio when he was young is considered one of Australia's most successful and loved authors. His most famous book, 'I Can Jump Puddles' is based on his life story and the obstacles he faced as a child in trying to overcome his disability. The portrait of Alan Marshall was exhibited as a finalist at the 1956 Archibald Prize. -

Framed portrait of Malcolm Daubney who was President of Vision Australia Foundation 1999-2002. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB/VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Daubney wears a navy suit, pale blue shirt and navy blue Kiwi tie. Mr Malcolm Daubney has worked closely with blind and vision impaired people for many years. In the 1980s Mr Daubney was “volunteered” by John Wicking to the Vision Australia’s Kooyong Committee. Shortly after his appointment he was posted to Singapore for business, where he served on the committee of the Singapore Association for the Blind for five years. Upon his return he rejoined the Kooyong Branch Committee. Professor Mica Smith was a well known and much loved professor of Chemistry and Metallurgy at the Ballarat School of Mines from 1882 - 1922.Studio portrait of Alfred Mica Smith in oval oak mount, possibly gelatin silver print. Plaque attached below reads 'PROFESSOR ALFRED MICA SMITH (1844 - 1926) A graduate of Chemistry, B.Sc. (Hons), London, Professor Smith came to Australia in 1873. In 1882 he joined the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries as Professor of Chemistry and Metallurgy, in which post he remained for forty years. City of BallaratSculpture - Public Artwork, John Undy, Robert Burns Memorial Statue by John Udny, 22 April 1887
This is Australia’s first monument to the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns and his dog. It was carved from marble in Italy by sculptor John Udny and is inscribed with quotes from the writer himself and features beautiful patterned tiles at its base. This sculpture tells us much of Ballarat’s Scottish history by placing their most revered poet and ballardier of Auld Lang Syne at the corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets. The local design was carried out by artist John Undy in Carrara marble and placed with this scene. The proud figure of Burns faces west and is accompanied by his collie dog with a book purposely hanging in his hand and a pencil in the other as his constant companions. Burns is mounted on a plinth engraved with some beautiful Burn’s poetry and surrounded by art deco styled tiling and a cast iron palisade.
