Professor Mica Smith was a well known and much loved professor of Chemistry and Metallurgy at the Ballarat School of Mines from 1882 - 1922.

Studio portrait of Alfred Mica Smith in oval oak mount, possibly gelatin silver print. Plaque attached below reads 'PROFESSOR ALFRED MICA SMITH (1844 - 1926) A graduate of Chemistry, B.Sc. (Hons), London, Professor Smith came to Australia in 1873. In 1882 he joined the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries as Professor of Chemistry and Metallurgy, in which post he remained for forty years. Professor Smith was involved in many areas outside his teaching, but his chief fame comes from the knowledge he gave to and the affection he inspired in his students.'
