This photograph was published in Church and Nation 12 December 1984. The photograph was taken at celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Parkdale Uniting (formerly Methodist) Church. The current brick veneer building incorporated an earlier weatherboard church built on the site. The old church was brick veneered and tiled in 1961. The 3 items in this display - bell, crystal vase and cake server- were presented to the Wodonga Auxiliary of the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind (RVIB) marking 50, 60 and 70 years of service respectively. This auxiliary was formed in March 1932 with K.D. Watson as the Inaugural President. Its purpose was to raise funds to assist blind and visually impaired people across the state of Victoria. The volunteers over 70 years spent countless hours door knocking in the annual fundraiser, and selling raffle tickets at street stalls. As the City of Wodonga expanded the areas to be door-knocked increased, creating a challenge for the mainly elderly members of the Auxiliary. Eventually it closed down in 2002 when the RVIB amalgamated with Vision Australia. The longest serving member of the Auxiliary was Mrs. Jean Burbidge.These items have local and state significance as they represent the work carried out by a local group of volunteers to support an important state wide institution.3 awards received by the RVIB Wodonga Auxiliary for recognition of their service. They include a crystal vase, a gold bell and a silver cake server. 18/10 is stamped on the reverse of the cake slicer. These medals were issued by the Town of Warrnambool in 1897 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria of England. Walter John Hickford, the Mayor Warrnambool at that time, has his name on the medal. Walter Hickford (1855-1928) was a Warrnambool businessman, setting up a shop in Liebig Street in 1880, supplying the paint materials for householders, contactors, painters and artists. He also carried out decorative work in private homes, businesses and churches. Hickford was active in civic life in Warrnambool, serving as a Councillor from 1890 to 1903 and he was Mayor from 1895 to 1897.These medals are of considerable importance as they were produced for the Town of Warrnambool in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. They have both a local and a wider national significance.,1These two circular bronze medals have profiles of Queen Victoria as a young woman and as a crowned monarch on the reverse and the Warrnambool Coat of Arms on the obverse. The Australian Tramway Employees Association commissioned in 1915, a banner for use in marches or events. It was painted in 1916 by George Grant with its first public appearance at the Eight-Hour Day Diamond Jubilee on 10 April 1916, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the introduction of an eight-hour working day in Victoria. The reference gives a detailed history of the banner, it significance and the background to its painting. It is now held in the collection of Museums Victoria. The ATEA was the forerunner to the Australian Tramway and Motor Omnibus Employees' Association, now part of the Rail Tram and Bus Union. This is an invitation to the launch of the conservation and publication project for the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. The invitation was sent out in the name of Lilian Foyle, the Warrnambool photographer and artist who produced the portraits and some of the sketches on the board. A person representing Lilian Foyle welcomed those who came to the launch. The Pioneer Honour Board, initiated by Edward Vidler, was first assembled in 1907 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. It has the portraits of 204 pioneer men of Warrnambool and district and is one of the best examples of a pioneer honour board in Victoria. It now requires extensive conservation work and an appeal has been launched to cover the cost of this. A publication with biographies of the 204 men is also being prepared. This invitation is of great interest as it is connected to the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board which is one of the most important historical items in the city of Warrnambool and a work of art in its own right.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper with black printing and a black and white photograph of Lilian Foyle. This book was written and produced by Edward Vidler, Born in England, Edward Vider, a writer, publisher, journalist and editor, was in Geelong in the 1880s where he produce a commemorative volume of that city. In Warrnambool in the early 1900s Vidler was Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures and of the Warrnambool and District Progress League. In 1907 he produced ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. In 1907 he also organized the project that produced the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. Later Vidler lived in Melbourne where he edited magazines and published his own and other writings. He was interested in the promotion of the arts and was a keen naturalist. He was a foundation member of the group that established the Maranoa Native Gardens in Balwyn.These books are of the utmost significance as ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is a seminal work in the history of the Warrnambool – second only in importance to Richard Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887. ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is noted for the accuracy of Vidler’s research, its complementary value to Osborne’s history and its presentation of historically valuable material that might otherwise be lost. The photographs in the book are of excellent quality and of great historical value and continue to be scanned and copied today. Nearing the 60th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings The Herald newspaper interviewed former light horsemen including Legatees Rex Hall and Bill Scott. The caption of the photo mentions that they would be leading the Anzac march mounted on horseback that year. Th ephoto shows Jim Holland, Rex Hall, and Bill Scott with Jim Rogers (seated). The rest of the article by John Hamilton describes the Gallipoli campaign. The article was part of a collection of photographs in an album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items 01027 to 01036. The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. This set of six colour photographs of a Catafalque Party from the Army Survey Regiment was taken at the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross on the 19th of November 1995. The ceremony was held to commemorate the 60th anniversary and the refurbishment of the site. The refurbishment entailed the complete replacement of the cross and its surrounds. The cross is also known as the Cameron Memorial Cross and was built in 1935 as a memorial for those who lost their lives in the First World War. The Guest Speaker was Mr Bruce Ruxton AM MBE OBE, who at the time was the president of the Victorian RSL. He served in the 2/1st Australian Topographical Survey Company in WW2 before reallocation to the 2/25th Australian Infantry Battalion. He was the president of the Victorian RSL from 1979 to 2002 and was a staunch vocal advocate for the health and welfare of war veterans and their families. This is an original letter written by Peter Adam to Edward Vidler in 1907. Peter Adam was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool district and the letter records his life beginning with his arrival in 1854 and concluding with his connection with the Kinnear family who acquired the historic property of Allandale in 1906. The letter also refers to the sending of a photograph and a sum of money for the right to have the photograph included on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honor Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress league and Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures in 1907 and he proposed producing a Pioneer Honour Board as part of Warrnambool’s 60th anniversary celebrations. He contacted many of the pioneers or their families and asked for a photograph, a fee and a biography and had the Boadrd made. For many reasons, including financial ones, the Pioneer Honour Board was not seen by the Warrnambool public until the 1920s but today it is one of Warrnambool’s great treasures. This letter is original and is of the utmost importance as it gives personal information about the life of Peter Adam, a person on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honour Board and it refers to the submission of a photograph for placement on the board. This is one of only two letters that we know of that refers to the sending of a photograph and the fee charged for its inclusion on the Pioneer Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, is important in Warrnambool’s history as the person most responsible for producing the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board, one of Warrnambool’s historical treasures.
