Inspector's Cap - MMTB - green cloth exterior, brown cotton interior lining with black leather pad on the inside, black leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a black cord at the front half of the cap terminating in two small MMTB gold metal buttons on either side, black plastic external peak and green on the inside of the cap. Hat band has two gold bands or braids around the outside of the cap. Has a manufacturers lable inside the cap - made by Mountcastle Pty Ltd of Melbourne St South Brisbane. Has two holes where the badge would have been fitted. Set of two uniform coat buttons (approx. 16mm dia) are made by Buttons of Birmingham UK. Both button have metal eye hooks on the rear. The photo has written on it in white ink "Goodfellows "Ferry" over any difficulty including the "Badger" " and date of 18.3.12. which is a reference to the General Strike in Brisbane of Jan 1912 by Brisbane Tramway Company workers over the wearing of Union badges which was strongly opposed by the Company Manager Joesph 'Boss' Badger. At the time there was a major industrial or arbitration case before Mr Justice Higgins regarding Australian tramways employees and their working conditions. The Union commenced as the Australian Tramway Employees Association in 1910. Changed its name in 1934 to the "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" so as to incorporate bus drivers of motor omnibuses. Union members were issued with badges to indicate their membership. They were permitted to be worn on their uniforms. See item 5943 for another example. Wearing of Union badges in Brisbane Tramways was a major source of industrial action in 2012 - see "One American too many" by David Burke, published 2012 by the Queensland Museum.Demonstrates a badge issued to members of the ATEABadge - Australian Tramway Employees Association (Tramways Union) badge.
