It discusses the cost of printing and holds up that might mean the book was not published. He says: "Naturally I should be greatly disappointed if it fails to see the light of day. It cost me a great deal of effort at a time when effort with me was not easy, and, quite frankly, I should never have attempted it if I thought for a moment that my hard work would not result in the book being printed."A record of a past staff member praising Savige and the legatees.White paper letter on Junior Legacy Club letterhead from Blatchford to Stan Saviage about his biography.Handwritten in blue pen 'Blatchford 1932' and signed in black ink 'Yours Blatch', and noted in red pen 'Claude Blatchford (Editor of the History)'.claude blatchford, history -

From ‘Yrs ...Referring to the legal history and transfer of land for the Junior Legacy Club Balnarring camp from Legatee Savige. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also ran a camp in the area and the area became known as Somers. These documents record the transfer of the land to Legacy. Film, Legacy
... an overview of the work they did. activities widows club junior ...30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. Legatees are shown cutting, trucking and delivering firewood to widows. Photography by Frederick Richardson; sound by Peter Willesee; Executive Producer Michael Willesee; produced and edited by Bob Lawson. A Trans Media Production. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Letter, Aaron Beattie, 1928
... of the physical culture classes for girls was underway. girls' club junior ...Correspondence between Aaron Beattie Esq from Beattie Physical Culture College Melbourne and E. Hilmer Smith Esq about Girls’ Physical Culture Classes in July 1928. It was intended to aid the Sydney Legacy Club establish classes for girls. Excerpts include the following information: "I would suggest that you form a special C/tee to handle the Physical Culture work. . . . I would suggest that special care be taken to see that none but fully-qualified and trained teachers handle the children - this is all important. . . . We charge every child 5/- per year, payable quarterly. We have been most fortunate here with the girls section. An old friend of mine - Mrs Gillies - is our Hon. Directress. She was - until her marriage - in charge of all Physical Culture training in the State Schools of Victoria, and is a wonderful woman. She takes complete charge, appoints her own staff and so on. We pay some of her assistants from £2.2.0 to £5.5.0 per term of 12 weeks. The class was formed in May last year with 42 girls - we now have 121, and they have left the boys far behind. Enclosed you will find a copy of our measurement chart, which is an important part - every child should be recorded before starting, and again at the end of the year. I am also sending you a copy of our Demonstration Programme. This show was given after the girls had been going for 10 months, and it was a wonderful success - all these things help to bring success, and children seem to want these things to keep them going. . . . We spend about £600 per year on our Children's Work and nearly all of that goes to the Physical Culture side." The correspondence is a good snapshot of the undertaking of Melbourne Legacy running girls' club at that point in time and that Melbourne Legacy was trying to help Sydney Legacy establish a similar program. Legacy was only 5 years old at that time and already the importance of the physical culture classes for girls was underway.Set of three typed and dated handwritten letters on paper between Aaron Beattie Esq, and E Hilmer Smith Esq. 00126.1 on Legacy Club letterhead. 00126.4 on Commonwealth Bank notepaper.girls' club, junior legatee, girls' classes, aaron beattie -

Document, Girls Legacy Classes, 1976
... to moving to Legacy House. girls' classes girls' club junior legatee ...A recollection of information about Girls Legacy Club and its primary instructor Miss Enez Domec Carre. It was written by C.E. Chancellor in June 1976. "Draft only. Girls Legacy Classes When I was attached to Girls' Classes after being transferred from Mildura Club to Melbourne, I found that the difference between the administration of the Girls' and the Boys' Classes was that the Girls' Classes were centralised in one building in Market Street, whilst the Boys' Classes were held in Melbourne and in various suburbs. The building in Market Street was leased from the Melbourne City Council, it was old, had narrow stairways, small rooms and was dusty and noisy so that is can be appreciated that the classes were held under great difficulties and inconvenience. Classes were held on both Friday and Tuesday nights of each week and the girls were trained in physical culture, ballet and dancing, and most of them also attended a speech training class. The girls were divided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior girls, and the hourly classes commenced at 5 p.m. It will be appreciated that after WW2 the numbers of girls attending increased considerably (actual numbers may be on old files) and it was necessary for the overall organisation to be efficient for this work to be efficiently carried out. In retrospect I do not think that too great a tribute can be paid to Miss Enez Domec Carre, F.P.C.V., not only for her great ability in teaching the physical culture and dancing classes, but also because she became the confidant of the mothers and the girls for their particular problems, and was able to transmit these to the Class Legatees, and she also assisted in helping to solve them - and be sure there were many of them with so many girls and families involved. Miss Carre was also responsible for the many magnificent presentations of the various items learnt by the Classes during each year and of the merging of individual classes held at various times and days to enable them to be so successfully shown at the each annual Legacy Parade. Miss Carre also organised the Mothers, Legatees' wives and friends into sewing groups to provide the thousands of costumes required for the items presented, and naturally she had to design these costumes - all of this work was carried out, as previously mentioned, under the extreme difficulties they were working under in the Market Street building. The purchase of Legacy House and the transfer of classes to this building was of immense help and importance in the carrying on of these classes which have proved so valuable to Legacy work. Many of the girls - now Mothers and Grandmothers still help in Legacy work and still appreciate the value of the Girls' Classes were to them. C.E. Chancellor cc. to Legatees A.R. Beattie / Larkin / Gibsey"A nice summary of the work done by Miss Enez Domec Carre for Legacy and the conditions the classes were held in prior to moving to Legacy House.White foolscap paper with black type x 2 pages recollecting the contribution Miss Enez Domec Carre to the Girls Physical Culture Classes as well as details of location of classes.girls' classes, girls' club, junior legatee -
