Frontpage has a photo titled "Trams are their hobby" showing a photo of a large group of tram enthusiasts visiting Ballarat as part of the Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA) Easter meeting and Ballarat tour of 1962. Page 3 has an article titled "Their hobby is electric traction" - about some 84 members chartering a rail motor to Ballarat on Saturday 21 April 1962, and the use of two special trams. Quotes Mr. Ken Craven about the association. Was welcomed by Mr L. Denmead of the SEC. Notes no member of the tour was a current transport worker and that it was the second such tour to Ballarat. See Reg Item 8422 for an actual print of the photograph. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. The Mair family were resident in Barton Street for several generations. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. This photo of the Telecom Tower was one of a series of photos taken of landmarks and houses of the area by Ken Hall in c1980. The PMG / Telecom / Telstra tower was built in 1961-1963 as a relay station to support television and radio links between city and regional broadcasting stations. The tower itself was 45 m in height with a 2 storey building for equipment and staff surrounded by garden. From the beginning it was opposed by local residents. In response to a Telstra application to replace it with a 40m slimline monopole, the City of Whitehorse controversially sought to have the structure heritage-listed, a move which caused much debate. In May 2015 Council ultimately rescinded its decision and gave permission for demolition, however Telstra deemed the permit conditions to be too restrictive and decided to continue to use the tower. The permit (to replace the tower) expired in September 2017. ‘Dalriada’” at 77 Union Road, on the corner Bona Vista Avenue has been demolished. It was the home of Mr Charles Henri Dillon Steele, a dentist of Collins Street, his wife Sarah (nee Russell) and daughters Harriette Vevers (Hattie) and Margaret Dillon (Nancy). They are pictured with grandmother Mrs Sarah Ann Vevers Russell (nee Lasslett), who with her husband Alexander lived at 'Clifton', Union Road, Surrey Hills from prior to 1903. Peter Haeffner’s birth details have not been found but he was the son of Henry Norman Neil and Mabel Haeffner, who in 1922 lived at 'Spring Creek' near Tallangatta, close to Henry’s parents Henry Thomas Haeffner (1858-1935) and Eliza Jane (ms Chesney - 1868-1940), farmers near Tallangatta. Henry and Mabel moved to 22 Wharton Street, Surrey Hills before moving back to the Tallangatta area to help out on his parents' farm during the Depression. They moved back to Surrey Hills c1932 to 33 Clyde Street. Peter had a sister Marjorie and brothers Jack and Donald. His service record has not been found, possibly due to a mis-spelling of the surname Haeffner. Marj, Jack and Donald were pupils at Chatham Primary School. "Braemar" at 18 Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills - built c1894, demolished in1977 – and home of James Sneddon Snr. and family from 1890 until c1950. We believe it is James is at the gate and his family on the veranda. James was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire Scotland in 1833, as was his wife Jane. He died in March 1901 and she in March 1911. They are buried in Boroondara Cemetery (Pres B0522) with their daughter Jane (1864-1928). James Sneddon (Snr) was an important man in early Surrey Hills. He established real estate and ironmongery businesses in Union Road – first on the corner of Stirling Crescent and later over the road on the corner of Windsor Crescent. He was chairman of Surrey Hills’ MUIOOF (Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows). James Sneddon Jnr. followed his father in the family real estate business and was an even busier community man. He was a JP and had roles in the Surrey Hills ANA, the Progress Association and the Choral Society. He lived 2 doors from his father. The real estate business continued on the corner of Windsor Crescent and Union Road (north side) until the business was sold to the Doubleday (family) after WW2.The Sneddon family were early settlers and business owners in Surrey Hills and remained over 3 generations. Different family members held many roles in community organisations. Taken in January 1982; very similar to SHP0635. Surrey Family Hotel (McNeill's Family Hotel) was built in 1888 by Alexander McNeill. It closed as a hotel after the Local Option vote in 1920. Vic Dartnell joined his cousin Percy Cathcart in a pharmacy on the opposite corner in 1936 and moved it to this corner in 1940. His son John followed as the pharmacist and then his daughter Amanda. After the Dartnell family sold the business, the pharmacy continued in a similar manner as a compounding pharmacy and retained 'Dartnell' in its name. Health Centre in the Surrey Gardens, 1982 Photograph Ken Hall Ken ...The Baby Health Centre opened in the Surrey Gardens in 1930 on the site previously occupied by the screen for outdoor pictures. Previously during the 1920s it had operated in the room underneath the rotunda in the Surrey Gardens. The room was also shared by other groups including the Surrey Hills Progress Association (SHPA). The SHPA raised 200 pounds to provide the materials for the building, which was built by voluntary labour under the leadership of Ralph Hayes, a local builder. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs A Latham, Mayoress of Camberwell on 31 March 1930. There is a bottle containing the names of the committee members sealed in the pillar behind the memorial stone. The centre was managed by a committee until 1975. Maternal health nurses associated with the centre included Sister D Thompson, Sister Newnham, Sister Kelsell, Sister Barker, Sister Sharp and Sister Bolton. Ref: Mrs D Lancashire - a long-serving member of the committee. The site of the Surrey Hills Maternal and Child Health Centre was moved to 18 Verdun Street, adjacent to the pre-school, in accord with Council policy to co-locate services and from a concern regarding solo staff working in relatively isolated locations. The building was included in the heritage overlay protecting the gardens and was refurbished by Council for community use. The cairn commemorates the work of Cr Albert Ernest Vine who was a Camberwell Councillor from 1926-1934 and 1937-1944; he was also Mayor on 1940-41. John Kendrick Blogg was born in Canada and migrated to Victoria in 1877. In 1884 he established a successful industrial chemistry business, which included extracting perfume from Australian native trees and plants.liquid ammonia for refrigeration, acetic acid, perfumes, shoe polish, baking powder and non-alcoholic drinks. Other products were He lived at 'Balmoral' in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills; his woodwork was produced here. Family oral history has that he took up woodcarving after his 1st wife, Annie, died in 1893. His earliest known piece is a music cabinet of 1901; the latest is a panel of 1932 when Blogg was 81 years of age. He was a member of the Victorian Artists Society and exhibited there between 1920 and 1924. Much of his work incorporates motifs of Australian flora, particularly gum leaves. John and his family were members of St Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Surrey Hills. The present church building was dedicated in December 1910 and J K Blogg's contribution to the new building was the Hogg Memorial pulpit which is comprised of 13 panels. Blogg carved more than 300 pieces for churches, schools, royalty, family and friends. Many of J K Blogg's pieces remain with family members, but he is represented in municipal (City of Whitehorse), state and national collections. In addition to work in the St Stephen's Presbyterian Church within the Surrey Hills area his work was produced for Surrey Hills Primary School, Surrey Hills Bowling Club and Surrey Hills Methodist Church, however perhaps his most famous local work is the honour board at the Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. Blogg was also a poet. The Honor Roll and Shrine in the Surrey Gardens were opened on Sunday 7 April 1918, prior to the cessation of fighting. Mrs Charles H D Steele (MS: Sarah Margaret Russell), president of the local Patriotic League, is credited with the idea of building The Shrine as a fitting memorial to the soldiers of the district. The Surrey Hills Progress Association coordinated raising funds from local residents. John Kendrick Blogg carved the beautiful honor roll in Indian teak and Australian white mahogany and the design of The Shrine was by architectural firm Gawler & Drummond. John Stevens Gawler was a partner in the firm, lived locally and also enlisted. Although he may have been overseas during some of the design process he is often credited with the design. Both men donated their services. The 2 cannons in the gardens were acquired by Mr Arthur Brookes in 1901 to commemorate the end of the Boer War. He was popularly known as 'Empire Brooks' and the cannons as 'Brooks' Babies'. They were originally placed in the grounds of the Guildford Road Recreation Oval. Arthur Brooks was an active community member and one of the founding members of the Surrey Hills Progress Association. Original photo was contained in a booklet printed by Camberwell Council in 1933.This is one of the earliest known photos of 3 elements important in designating the Surrey Gardens as one of the City of Boroondara's heritage gardens, now protected by a heritage overlay. The Shrine was one of the first WW1 memorials to be built in Australia and possibly the first in Victoria. It was unveiled prior to the end of hostilities and was built entirely through local community effort. The design of The Shrine, reflective of domestic architecture, is unusual. Its Honor Roll is also a noted example of sculptor John Kendrick Blogg's work and valued especially for its incorporation of Australian motifs, wattle blossom and gum leaves. The boomerang over the full width of the monument was said to be symbolic of both those who did and did not return. The number of panels has been increased having been updated on at least 2 occasions. Whereas the date 1914 is at one end of the boomerang, the other end is not dated reflecting that the dedication of The Shrine before the war ended.Black and white photo of the Soldiers' Memorial Honour Board housed in The Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. The wooden part of the board was carved by John Kendrick Blogg. A large boomerang forms part of the apex underneath which is an emblem with the rising sun. Under this are 8 panels on which are the names of service personnel. The supporting timber is carved with designs including varied flora.
