Anvil, early to mid-1900s
This anvil once belonged to Goodall and Sons, who were blacksmiths in Terang. The smith was called upon to do a variety of work. In the early 1900s he was often the nearest person to be able to perform an engineer’s services for many miles around. An anvil is used by blacksmiths to forge and shape his work pieces. The conical horn is used for hammering curved work pieces. The anvil is a common tool of the blacksmiths (‘smithies’) and other metalworkers. There has been very little change in the basic design of the anvil since Greek and Roman times. Henry Goodall (1870-1936) Henry Goodall was proprietor of garages as H. Goodall & Sons Pty. Ltd., at both Terang (McKinnon and High Streets) and Mortlake (Dunlop Street). His business was in operation in at least in 1916 and perhaps well before, considering the date of the tyre bender and its use for wagons with wooden wheels. It was still in operation in 1953, chasing up debtors in Mount Gambier Court. Amongst the employees of H. Goodall & Sons Pty. Ltd. was Ernie Entwistle, a blacksmith (a soldier who died in 1916 ) and Alfred Hodgetts, radio expert (killed in a fatal accident in 1943, when he was in his early 30s ). Henry Goodall was involved in the community as a Justice of Peace, a deputy coroner, President of the Mortlake Hospital, trustee of the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, and as a prominent Freemason. He and his wife had two sons (Charles and John) and one daughter (Mrs. Chas. Newton, of Skipton). The anvil is locally significant as it was used by a local company in Terang and Mortlake in their blacksmith, wheelwright and garage business. It is an example of the tools of the blacksmiths’ trade in Victoria in the early to mid-1900s. Anvil, single horn, used as a tool by blacksmiths and metalworkers. Large block of metal with a flat top face, a conical horn on one side and a ‘v’ shape on the other. The anvil’s base has a squat stand and sides that are a variety of shapes. Vice, 1800s
A wheelwright’s spoke vice was used to hold the wheel hub firmly while the spokes were hammered into the wheel hub, then the spokes would be joined to the wooden wheel felloe before finally the metal flat tyre, or later the rubber tyre, would be attached to the felloe. A wheelwright’s spoke vice would have been very necessary for blacksmiths circa 1800s-1920s as it would have been used in the manufacture and repair of carts, wagons, coaches and other horse-drawn vehicles. This wheelwright’s spoke vice was once used by Harry Goodall of H. Goodall & Sons Pty. Ltd. corner of McKinnon and High Streets, Terang. Victoria. Henry Goodall & Sons Henry Goodall (1870-1936) was proprietor of garages as H. Goodall & Sons Pty. Ltd., at both Terang (McKinnon and High Streets) and Mortlake (Dunlop Street). Drawer Cabinet, 1920-1950
This blacksmith’s drawer cabinet once belonged to Goodall and Sons, who were blacksmiths in Terang. The drilled holes in the drawers may have once had knotted rope handles. Some of the drawer fronts have been split, on broken, in the area of the holes, indicating that they drawers have had heavy use. The stencilled numbers could have been used for sorting different blacksmith items such as tools, scraps of materials, fasteners and horse shoes. The smith was called upon to do a variety of work. Tyre Bender, 1884
A tyre bender is used to bend and shape metal rims for wooden wagon wheels. This tyre bender’s model first appeared in the Day Bros catalogue in 1884 as the “Giant” model. The catalogue of 1883 only showed a lighter duty model called the “Lion”. It can be assumed that this later “Giant” model was a heavy duty improvement over the 1883 "Lion" and other smaller models which were still being advertised for sale in 1884. The Day Bros foundry, makers of this tyre bender, was operating as the manufacture of wheel right and blacksmith tools and general machinery in the 19th century in the USA and successfully exported their goods all over the world. Wagon tyre benders would have been very common circa 1850-1920, so there were probably many makers over the years. Early on, it would have become clear to the blacksmiths about which designs worked best so, eventually, the various makers would have made similar products to each other. This tyre bender was once used by Harry Goodall of H. Steel tyre bender mounted on timber base, used for wagon wheel steel rims. Made from cast iron and steel, double geared with four cogs to unite the upper and lower steel rollers. There are adjustable guide collars to keep the iron in line while it is being bent. It can also be used with two cranks for heavy duty work utilising the use to two operators. In the early 1900s he was often the nearest person to be able to perform an engineer’s services for many miles around. The Dawn Ball-bearing Post Drill no. 611 is described in McPherson’s Catalogue as a “drilling machine with adjustable automatic feed, with improved Dawn coupler and ball-bearing thrust’. The heavy design of the flywheel enables it to maintain momentum” and is “fitted with pulleys for belt drive if desired” The hand crank drives an automatic feed to work off a cam-follow system opposite a large wheel. Made by Dawn Manufacturing Co. Australia 1920-1950. DAWN MANUFACTURING CO. Dawn Manufacturing Co. was founded in Coburg, Melbourne, in 1917 by the four Blake brothers, who were all engineers. After World War I Dawn was supplying drills Australia wide and the company was growing at a healthy rate. During the depression they remained busy, with employees working 60-80 hour weeks. Dawn was contracted to supply vices and clamps to the Australian Defence Department and munitions factory during the World War II. In 1959 the company was taken over by G.N. Raymond Group, then in 1973 the Siddons Ramset Limited acquired Dawn. In December 1991, Dawn became a unit of the United States owned Stanley Works Pty. Ltd. In November 1998 Dawn became 100 per cent Australian owned. HENRY GOODALL & SONS Henry Goodall (1870-1936) was proprietor of garages as H. Goodall & Sons Pty. This cigarette case was owned by Kenneth Darnton Watson and carried into battle during World War I. Kenneth Darnton Watson was born at Bendigo on 24 May 1893 to George Darnton Watson and Adelaide Nora Holmes. He was educated at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, being selected as School Captain in 1913 and a member of the Head of the River rowing team. After finishing school, he worked as a jackaroo on Wanganella Station and later at Mt. Widderin, Skipton, Victoria. When WWI was declared, Kenneth enlisted and after initial training at Maribyrnong, Victoria he left Australia as 2nd Lieutenant with 7th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, to disembark at Plymouth on July 10, 1916. He took part in the Battles of Messines, Menin Road, Polygon Wood and Passchendaele Ridge in 1917. For his efforts in Passchendaele Ridge on 17th December he was awarded the Military Cross "for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty." In 1918 he took part in the Battles of Villers-Bretonneux, Hamel and Amiens. He returned to Australia in November 1919 and was discharged on 20th January 1920. In 1922, Kenneth Darnton Watson came to Wodonga where he purchased de Kerilleau, consisting of 2,500 acres, from Mr George Gordon. The two storey brick homestead had been built by William Huon in 1870. On 30th May 1924, he married Phyllis Emily Lenore Austin and they had four children, Ian Darnton 1925, Robert Darnton 1926 Rosemary McPherson 1929 and Faith Holmes 1931. On the land he worked hard, building fences, cattle, sheep and horse yards, and farmed Corriedale sheep, Shorthorn cattle and horses. Mr Watson was an innovative farmer, introducing modern methods of top dressing at de Kerilleau by means of an aircraft. He was also a dedicated community man. He was a member of both Albury and Wodonga Show Committees, Murray Valley Development League, No.1 Region, Graziers' Association of Southern Riverina, Albury Legacy Club, Wodonga RSL, and Wodonga Turf Club including terms as President on several of these organisations. Kenneth was also a Warden of St. Luke's Church of England, Wodonga. Kenneth served as Wodonga Shire President from 1929 to 1931, and was again elected to Council from 1943 to 1945. A most respected and valued member of the local community, Kenneth Darnton Watson died on the 4th of October 1951, aged 58. Lenore Watson lived at de Kerilleau until her death on 15th June 1984. "A joint meeting of city and town ratepayers, convened by Messrs Francis Jago and Henry Johns, interested in the formation of a cart bridge in Hill street, over the Yarrowee Creek, was held on Saturday evening, in the Societies Hall, corner of Skipton and South streets, with the view of taking united action in the matter. Mr Morris was voted to the chair, : and about 60 persons were present. The chairman stated that the object of the meeting was that united influence should be brought to bear upon the City and Town Councils, so that a cartbridge should be erected. He said that Mount Pleasant would no doubt be thickly populated in a few years, and the bridge would prove a great boon to the inhabitants of the locality. By means of a cart bridge drays, would be enabled to save on their journeys to and fro between the mount and the batteries, at least a mile and a half each time. He hoped that the councillors for the south ward would assist them in this matter. Mr Jago, as one of the conveners of the meeting, said that united action on the part of both eastern and western ratepayers was requisite, so as to exert a strong pressure upon the City and Town Councils, in order that the work should be carried but. Mr Grainger moved the first resolution as follows;—“ That the construction of a cart bridge over the Yarrowee Creek at Sunnyside, to facilitate communication between the residents of the city and town, is urgently necessary, and that in the interests of both municipalities the two councils be asked to at once jointly carry out the work. In doing so he said that the necessity of a cart-bridge for the residents of Mount Pleasant would be apparent when the number of batteries, tanneries, and also the Woollen Mill, in the district were considered. The place was of growing import ance, and ready communication should at once be established. Another reason was that an immense saving in time would be effected. It was quite a common occurrence to see one, two, or three drays stuck in the bed of the creek which had gone that way to make a short cut. Now, what with the horses floundering about and breaking their harness, it seemed a wonder to him that life had not been destroyed before now, just through the want of a cartbridge. Mr Johns seconded the resolution. Mr Robert Calvert supported the resolution, and said that it was disgraceful action on the part of the representatives of the south ward that the work had not been executed long ago. They should come together like men and demand that the work should be done, and if not done they should not pay rates until it was. (A voice—“But they’ll make us.” Laughter.) The wooden footbridge across the creek was “only a wooden fabric, not fit for a Christian to walk across, and steps should be taken to remedy this also. Mr Blight, a resident of Mount Pleasant, said that, in common with others, he had been opposed to the erection of the bridge two years ago, but his views had since been altered. Cr. Morrison, who was present, said that the fault of the cartbridge not being erected over the Yarrowee at Hill street lay not with the City Council, but with their neighbors, who had always been opposed to its erection there. In 1874 a motion was carried at a meeting of ‘the City Council" by which the sum of £5OO had been voted to carry but the work. As the bridges over the Yarrowee were joint undertakings of the city and town, they had, by the provisions of an act of Parliament, called upon the Town Council to assist them in the erection of the bridge. In consequence, a conference of the two corporate bodies had taken place, when a motion was moved by Cr Howard, the representative of the south ward, and seconded by Cr Turpie, of Ballarat East—“ That the bridge should be erected at Hill street.” The motion was rejected, principally through the eastern representatives, who wanted the bridge lower down. Since then the two councils had often met to consider, the question of bridges over the Yarrowee Creek, but nothing had been done at the meetings, as the Eastern Council wanted the bridge in one place and the City Council in another. He had himself, when first elected to the council, given notice of motion affirming the desirability of a bridge, at the place now fixed upon. The Woollen Company was growing in importance, and a direct, road to its works would greatly advance its interests. For the working, expenses of each ward £400 was annually, appropriated; and this amount would not be sufficient carry out the work. They would have to obtain a special grant of about £900, as Hill street would require a culvert to be erected therein, as now it was virtually an open drain which carried the drainage of the western plateau to the Yarrowee. He advised that strong pressure should be exerted, specially upon the Eastern Council, and then the work might be carried out. He thought that if the foot bridge was repaired, and large stones thrown into the creek, it would do until the bridge could be erected. The chairman then put the resolution, and it was unanimously carried. Mr Hamilton moved the second resolution— “That Messrs Fern, Greenwood, Peirce, and Jago be deputed by the meeting to wait upon the City and Town Councils and present the first resolution; also that petitions in its favor be signed by all ratepayers interested.” Mr Haigh seconded the resolution, which was carried. Votes of thanks to Cr Morrison for his attendance, and to the chairman for presiding, were passed, and the proceedings terminated." (Ballarat Star, 9 August 1881, page 3) "WOOLLEN MILL BRIDGE YARROWEE IMPROVEMENTS Though brief the official ceremony of opening the bridge across the Yarrowee Creek, near the Sunnyside Woollen Mills, was of an interesting character. It took place at noon yesterday in the presence of the Mayors and councillors of the City and Town. Hon. F. Hagel thorn (Minister of Agriculture).Hon Brawn. M.L.C., Lt-Col Morton (Acting City Clerk). Mr J. Gent (Town Clerk of Ballarat East), Mr A. Farrer (City Engineer), Lt. L. Finch (who is about to leave for the Front, and who assisted Messrs A. Farrer and G. Maughan in carrying out the project, Mr W. Hurdsfield (Clerk of Works) and others. An apology was received from Mr J. McClelland, contractor for the work. Mayor Hill expressed pleasure in Introducing Mr Hagelthorn, who had at great personal sacrifice and inconvenience come from Melbourne to perform the opening ceremony of that beautiful bridge, which was of great improvements that had been effected. When Mr Hagelthorn was Minister of Pubic works he visited Ballarat specially to see the condition of the creek, which at that time was in a disgusting state from a sanitary standpoint. After viewing the position, and realising the justice of the claim. Mr Hagelthorn made strong representations to the Government of which the was a member with the result that it voted £17,000 for the work. That action had been the means of turning a plague spot into a thing of beauty. They therefore owed a deep debt of gratitude to Mr Hagelthorn and the Government of which he was a member, and they were particular grateful to Mr Hagelthorn for coming to Ballarat to perform the open ceremony. Mayor Levy said he could bear testimony to the good work Mr Hagelthorn had always done for Ballarat. In him Ballarat and district always had a good friend. He thought Mr Hagelthorn would feel amply gratified at seeing the good work that had been done. It would serve as some reward for the expenditure, on behalf of the residents of Bal larat, of the amount of money made available through Mr Hagelthorn's instrumentality for the two municipalities. Otherwise the City and Town councils would not have been able to carry out so necessary and so beneficial a work. There was a great amount of work yet to be done, and when the financial market became low stringent Mr Hagelthorn would no doubt be pleased to take the necessary steps to have money provided for further works which could not be undertaken at the present time. The adjacent woollen mill was a standing monument to what was being done in Ballarat, and what ever the City and Town Councils or the Government could do to encourage such manufacturing enterprise should be done, and he was glad to be able to say that was being done as far as finances would permit. He concluded by presenting Mr Hagelthorn with a gold mounted pocket-knife with which to cut the ribbon stretched across the centre of the structure as a bar to traffic. The Hon. F. Hagelthorn, who was greeted with applause said before him was a good work well done in the interests of the public. Real prosperity could only be achieved by a movement carried out by the people to increase natural productiveness. Most of them had been made aware, on account of the war par tiularly, that the people who were best equipped, the industries that were best organised, and the Governments that were most intelligently controlled would get the most of this world's goods and some of its luxuries that Would be denied other people less efficient. Any thing the Government could do to promote industry and to increase the reward of those engaged in it, both employer and employee, would be done. Most Governments would do but little in that regard. ... Photograph - Digital photograph, Dorothy Wickham, Winter's Swamp, Ballarat, January to April 2014
Study of Winter's Swamp commissioned by BEN and completed by BHS. The swamp was named after one of the first European settlers in the district. Winter Swamp LAT -37 32 LONG 143 47, Parish of Dowling Forest, County of Grenville Winter Swamp, on the southwest corner of Ballarat West Town Common, was not included in the original proclamation of the Common in 1861. However, being marshland, it was not considered suitable for grazing, so was added to the Common soon after 1861. Winter Swamp is a large wetland with native and exotic pasture significant for wildlife. John Winter (Jock) was born in Berwickshire, Scotland. He married Janet Margaret Irving the daughter of Robert Irving, advocate, Bonshaw, Dumfries, Scotland. Winter died in Ballarat in 1875 and was buried at the Ballaarat Old Cemetery. He took up the run Bonshaw from 1841; Leigh River Buninyong 1842-46; Junction, Delatite, March 1851 to September 1862; with sons: Carag Carag and Corop, April 1857 to September 1872; Colbinabbin and Stewart’s Plains, April 1857 to December 1872; St Germains February 1867 to March 1871. (The name became Winter-Irving in 1890). Mr John Winter, who died on August 22 at the age of 72, was a man of some note it the mining community of Ballarat. He was a self-made man, and one of our oldest colonists, it being over a quarter of a century age since he took up county about Ballarat and settled at Bonshaw. He died very rich. It is calculated that if he had retained an interest in all his runs, his income must have been not less than £10,000 or £50,000 a year. Some eight or ten years ago he sold his Bonshaw pre-emption to the Bonshaw Gold mining Company for £20,000, and a few years later the ground belonging now to Winter's Freehold Company brought him £50,000 more, the payment being made at the requisition of the deceased in sovereigns. In these relations Mr. Winter has been closely identified with the mining industry at Ballarat. The deceased was a native of Lauder, in Berwickshire, and landed in Victoria several years before the gold discovery. The principle task of this project was the delivery of a report outlining the history of European settlement in the Skipton and Cardigan/Ballarat districts as pertinent to the use of and impact on the natural environment of the two reserves Skipton Common and Winter Swamp. The report was delivered in digital form only. The report, upon completion, was presented to the Network’s Committee in order to discuss the project. The report identified and described the uses of Skipton Common and Winter Swamp, and their impacts. In particular, this report examined farming/grazing (official and informal), mining, vegetation removal (including the removal of woodlands for timber, grasslands for pasture improvement) & use of riparian areas for access to water and timber removal. Recording the more benign and environmentally friendly uses such as picnicking, community activities, nature walks and the roles of organisations such as Field Naturalists’ and Bird Observers’ clubs, school and scout/guide groups will be relevant in helping to depict overall community attitudes towards the reserves; e.g.: has the Common generally been viewed as little more than a grazing paddock and fire hazard; has Winter Swamp always been the unknown natural asset that seems to have been its lot for at least the past 40 years? In this regard, the more contemporary history of actions surrounding the use and management of the reserves is of particular interest, in view of the extant evidence at both reserves; e.g. the actions of the Shire of Ballarat in the 1980s in establishing Winter Swamp as something of a competitor to Lake Wendouree but with a more environmental bent (although almost none of the plants used are indigenous species, but that is part of the story); the trotting track constructed on Skipton Common in the 1960s following representations to Premier Henry Bolte and the cropping of the western section of the Common to raise funds for the town’s new swimming pool, the fertilizing of the land putting an end to the native grassland vegetation. There are obviously multiple sources of information to source in preparing the report, however sources that the contractor is specifically requested to consult are the Skipton Historical Society, the former Skipton Common managers (specifically Graeme Pett), the Cardigan Windermere Landcare Group and the Learmonth Historical Society (believed to hold many of the former Shire of Ballarat’s records pertaining to the Council’s role as the Committee of Management for both Winter Swamp and the Ballarat West Town Common – Winter Swamp was split between 2 separate Crown Land tenures). The contractor is also encouraged but not required to utilise community newsletters, such as the Skipton Community Newsletter, to publicise and seek information about the project. Skipton Historical Society (Mary Bradshaw) contacted on Thursday 12 June 2.30pm. Mary lived on a farm out of Skipton but is currently living in the township. She remembers walking along the creek of the Common especially in spring and autumn in bare feet and that it was a very pretty place. There were a few snakes around the waterway in summer. People put cows and a couple of horses on the commonage to graze. Graeme Pett has always lived close to the Common and would know a lot about it. Other possible contacts would be Nicole Petress, Secretary of the Progress Association, and the Corangamite Council, Camperdown. Album - Album page, Orrong Road, Circa 1972
This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Victorian Heritage Database H0704 FORMER UNION CHURCH 84-86 ORRONG ROAD ELSTERNWICK https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/428 The Former Union Church, Elsternwick, designed by the architect George de Lacy Evans, and erected in 1889-90 is a building of historical and architectural significance for the following reasons:- (1) it is a rare and well- developed example of the early French Gothic manner as popularised through the muscular Victorian re-interpretation of English architect William Burgess, which in turn were derived from the publications of EE Viollet-le-Duc. Other Victorian cases of detailing derived from Viollet-le-Duc include Barwon Park (1868), the Presbyterian Church at Skipton (1871), the Bourke Street West Police Station by Bindley and Brittingham (PWD) dating from 1888-9 and the Lutheran Manse, East Melbourne by JAB Koch (1890). However, none of these buildings relates closely in form to the Union Church, Elsternwick. The only building which has been identified as closely comparable is The Bairnsdale Court House by AJ Macdonald (PWD) which dates from 1892. (2) the use of bright red brickwork is of significance, as the Former Union Church is believed to be only the second church building in Victoria to employ this material as a matter of conscious choice. Amongst red brick churches, it is thought to be preceded only by Reed, Henderson And Smart's Sacred Heart (1884), a Renaissance inspired design. (3) the building is believed to be a rare, possibly unique, surviving example of a church building erected for dual use by the Congregationalists and Baptists. In 1894 it was bought by the Congregationalists and continued as a Congregational Church until the formation of the Uniting Church.Page 165 of Photograph Album with four photographs, two of a church with the other two of houses on Orrong Road.Handwritten: ELSTERNWICK CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH [under top left photo] / 82 ORRONG ROAD [under top right photo] / 663-1 ORRONG ROAD / SEMI - DETACHED PAIR / 165 [bottom left]trevor hart, elsternwick congregational church, king street, orrong road, church, elsternwick, red brick, former union church, early french gothic style, architects, george de lacy evans, baptist church, conical towers, houses
