This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.A 19-page booklet published in 1936 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Kew Baptist Church in Highbury Grove. With the cover framed, the remaining four pages of the interior of the program remain in the collection. The entertainment commenced with music performed by Rene Breggozzo and Continental String Orchestra, Ballet music from Gounod's Faust and this was followed by a Cinesound Review and a Universal news reel. As usual, in these programs, the entertainment continued with a short movie, Laurel and Hardy in "Beau Hunks" and Wm T Tilden performing in "Volley and Smash". A rendition of the Meditation from Jules Massenet's "Thais" was performed by Rene Bregozzo prior to interval. After interval the main feature "The Sin of Madelon Claudet", starring Helen Hayes and Lewis Stone was shown and the evening concluded with the orchestra playing the national anthem.The program reveals the type of entertainments of people who attended theatres in the 1930s. The classical-style music performed during the evening's movie entertainments tell us that this style of music was very popular throughout the population. The pages of the program have many advertisements for businesses ranging from sewing machines sold by Ward Bros. of North Melbourne (a picture of a treadle machine illustrates the advertisement) to the "Claire" florist of Queens Walk and the shop selling dancing shoes, G.M. Coutie of Elizabeth Street. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, ultimately managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street, Kew from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (14/11/1922-19/01/2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by his grandson Adrian Rigg at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration.The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Circular blue, white and gilt enamel on metal membership medallion produced by the Kew Cricket Club for the year 1935-36 that belonged to Francis Horace Rigg (1882-1946). The medallion is enameled in shades of blue with the Club’s logo on circular white enameled section in the centre. The records of the Ringwood Croquet Club given to Gail Abbe - Archivist for safe - keeping with the request that they may be borrowed should the club require them for reference - 10-Dec-1993.Minutes of Ringwood Croquet Club from 1931 to 1947. Includes formation meeting held on 8th September 1931 at Ringwood Town Hall. The Moyoress, Mrs Honora Blood convened the meeting and occupied the chair. At that stage, the Ringwood Bowling Club had been formed. Men joined the croquet club in years to come. The Constitution was adopted with club colours blue, orange and green at a special meeting on the 6th October 1931 at the Town Hall under the presidency of Honora Blood.

This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of inter-church competitions in Warrnambool. One of the chief sponsors of this inter-church competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer. He had his head office and factory in Warrnambool. The competitions were for indoor sports and this one has been awarded for deck quoits. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops onto a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. In deck quoits the raised spike is usually replaced by concentric circles drawn on the playing surface. This game became very popular on ocean liner cruises from the 1920s on. The winner of this trophy, the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) was a leading church activity group for men in the 1930s. A Congregational Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1864 in Liebig Street and transferred to Henna Street in 1940. This church was sold in 1979 to the Salvation Army when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to become the Uniting Church. This trophy is of historical interest as it is one of the trophies dating from the 1930s and awarded by the now-defunct Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association in Warrnambool. This is a silver-coloured cup with an attached stem on a brown Bakelite stand. The cup has two ornamental handles. There is an inscription on one side of the cup. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consuls at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age." He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed. MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consuls, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr. Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have affected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present-day managers of mines. This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand.
