Theatre Program, Cass & Clothier (Printers), The Sin of Madelon Claudet (film) shown at the Athenaeum Theatre in 1931
With the cover framed, the remaining four pages of the interior of the program remain in the collection. The entertainment commenced with music performed by Rene Breggozzo and Continental String Orchestra, Ballet music from Gounod's Faust and this was followed by a Cinesound Review and a Universal news reel. As usual, in these programs, the entertainment continued with a short movie, Laurel and Hardy in "Beau Hunks" and Wm T Tilden performing in "Volley and Smash". A rendition of the Meditation from Jules Massenet's "Thais" was performed by Rene Bregozzo prior to interval. After interval the main feature "The Sin of Madelon Claudet", starring Helen Hayes and Lewis Stone was shown and the evening concluded with the orchestra playing the national anthem. The program reveals the type of entertainments of people who attended theatres in the 1930s. The classical-style music performed during the evening's movie entertainments tell us that this style of music was very popular throughout the population. The pages of the program have many advertisements for businesses ranging from sewing machines sold by Ward Bros. of North Melbourne (a picture of a treadle machine illustrates the advertisement) to the "Claire" florist of Queens Walk and the shop selling dancing shoes, G.M. Coutie of Elizabeth Street. A theatre program also reveals information about the location where the entertainment is enjoyed.Cover of a program for a film shown at the Athenaeum Theatre September 1931; the image is framed and hangs in Archives room.athenaeum theatre, program, programme, the sin of madelon claudet, helen hayes, lewis stone -

Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Nixon NV 1980, The History of the Kew Bowling Club 1880-1980. Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Silver gelatinous hotograph mounted on card of the Kew Bowling Club's VBA Pennant Winners, “B Team” 1931-2.kew bowling club - wellington street - kew (vic), clubs - lawn bowls - kew (vic) -

Principal Frank Lord gave an ANZAC Day address called "Live Every Day as an Anzac Day". The address started with "Our opportunity is with the children. If we failed i nthe past, lest us begin again now. You are young, and let it be your resolve to live every day as an Anzac Day, and achieve some of the things for which the men of two wars have laid down their lives. Living your days with an air of kindness and decency, you will set an example to the children, and when a country's children are made happier and finer, it will follow that the county will be a happier and finer place." Mt Lord referred to theseven and a half months' occupation of Gallipoli, and the tenacious clinging by Anzac troops to their square mile of territory. Illness, disease and death came to the confined area, but there also came a spirit of self-sacrifice and charity, and a courage whoich scorrned death and won for the Australian troops world renown. Strong men broke under the conditions, but their comrades carried them on, and the prevailing spirit among men was that the had dedicated ther lives to ensuring a decent society at home, free of tyranny. For the achievement of this, they were prepared to die. It became characteristic that when things were at their worst, men were at their best. Discipline did not come from above on Gallipoli, for the men stuck their own standards of discipline, and stuck to them. ... After the 1914-18 war, it was surprising to find head teachers who did not know children of deceased and disabled soldiers in their schools. All teachers should acquaint themselves with this knowledge, and seek assistance from children who are eligible for help from the Repatriation Department. For those pupils who do not come withing the scope of Repatriation, teachers might secure the required help from the Teachers; R.S.L. sub-branch, the Carry-on Club, for from Government Scholarships.
