An article on the front page of The Sun with a photo from the 1956 School Students Ceremony. It was published on Anzac Day with articles estimating 20,000 people to march in the Anzac parade and the weather was inclement. The photo shows Margaret Mackey wearing her brother John Mackey's Victoria Cross The article was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in separate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The collection of documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Two photos of journalist Edwin Maher signing copies of his books for Legatees at Legacy House. Presumably he had attended a Tuesday lunch meeting as a guest speaker. The books appear to be 'Stop the World I want to get on: How to drive yourself sane' (published 1993) and 'The Edwin Maher Scrapbook' (published 1990). Edwin Maher is a New Zealand born TV journalist who was a former ABC presenter. He helped present the Legacy Anzac Commemoration for Students in 1998.A record of a well known person attending Legacy House. A photo of the Shrine, it shows the Melbourne skyline and the gardens from an elevated position. It was used on the cover of the programme for the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" in 1973. It was used for several years afterwards as well. The student events were usually held just prior to ANZAC Day.The Shrine is an imposing building in the Melbourne skyline. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1986 on the death of Legatee Bill Scott. He joined Legacy in 1938 and was very active in with the children's classes and the Anzac commemoration for students. It says: "It is clear that Bill Scott’s contribution as a Legatee has been of the very highest order and an inspiration to all with whom he served because of his knowledge and enthusiasm.” In World War One he had served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. he was wounded four times and finished with the rank of Sergeant. In the Second World War he served as the Directorate of Hirings at Army Headquarters. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the ANZAC Day student commemoration, Anglsea camp, and milestone birthdays for widows. Plus the event that announced the Centenary Torch Relay. Three widows standing in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance and a photo of the elderly lady on her own. Her name is Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who helped launch the 1990 Legacy week as she was the oldest Legacy widow and had reached 101 years of age. Two newspapers used the photos on 4 September 1990. The Age used the three ladies with a caption. The Sun featured Winifred in a large photo on page 3. The article mentions her husband Archie, was shot four times in World War 1 but managed to live to the age of 83. Her son lost his life in World War 2 at the age of 23 while flying a mission over Germany and he was shot down. Legacy helped her after her husband died and she would be alone if it wasn't for Legacy. It mentions that Legacy hoped to raise $1.6 million to help the 23,000 ageing widows in their care. The photo of the three widows was featured in the 1990 Presidents report published with the Annual report. The caption says: 'Three generations of Legacy widows, WWII Mrs Dorothy Latta, 102 year old Mrs Winifred Fotheringham and Vietnam widow Mrs Barbara Leach.' Mrs Fotheringham is also seen at Anzac Commemoration service for students in April 1990 (item 00845) in the same outfit but with her badge on the other lapel. His report shows pictures from many of the activities the widows are involved in such as concerts and gatherings at Legacy House. The report also recaps events through the year such as outings and camps for the junior legatees, handicapped dependents, legacy week and the school students Anzac commemoration service. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. 'The Torch' is still published twice a year. In 1995 Legacy was promoted by a tram painted with 'Legacy never forgets' as part of the "Australia Remembers 1945-1995" program marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2. In 1996 Legacy featured Beatrice Gay, a World War One widow on the cover toasting at the annual WW1 Widows lunch. The president was Ray Ward. The report also recaps events through the year such as the school students' Anzac commemoration service, legacy week and the public speaking contest. One article showcases Welfare and Housing with one widow, Mabel, having her house painted after receiving paint donated by the Gas and Fuel Corporation and the painting done by Legatees. Another article is about the Alma Doepel and the experience of Junior Legatee Kim Anderson. The newsletter from May 1959. The cover featured the school students' Anzac commemoration service in 1959. The president's page discussed the type of activities and help legatees can provide and urges the junior legatee to come forward with any questions. There was an article on the Anzac observance for students. The Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club gave an update, including a reunion that had occurred at Stanhope. Article on girls classes including a visit by Miss Bunty Turner of 'My Fair Lady'. Operation Float was held. Boys classes are described fully. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War" Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up.
