This arch was built as a ceremonial arch. Plaque citation on the arch reads " Erected in 1884 by James Mackintosh, owner of local sawmill, for the visit of the Governor Sir H B Loch. This is the only known example in Victoria of a 19th century ceremonial arch, a type usually intended to be temporary.This arch is on the Historical Buildings register no.1092. It is the only known example of a temporary ceremonial arch still in existence in Victoria. The photograph was taken when some work was being carried out on one of the arched railway bridges on the Sunbury line. The bridge spans the Jackson Creek and across the Rupertswood viaduct. The Jacksons Creek is prone to flooding when rainfall is very heavy. The Jacksons Creek and the Macedon Street stone arched bridge are the features in this postcard with a view of a vineyard on the LH river bank. The gates and the iron lacework over the top are distinctive.The arch under the flyover is also distinctive; the basalt keystone appears to have been cut from one single block of stone. Most of the gaol has been demolished to allow the School of Mines Ballarat to expand onto the site. The remaining structures at the site include the main gate, warden's residence and governor's residence. The phtograph was taken by Alfred Sinel who was the local photgrapher in Sunbury. The four arched bridge spans the river at Deep Creek, Bulla. The bridge replaced the forde crossing which is in the foreground of the photograph.
