Transport, Bicycle 'Bastide' 1909, c1909
1891 Paris - Bordeaux Cycle Race started in the Place du Pont Bastide in Bordeaux. So the name Bastide was already known to cycle enthusiasts even before the cycle manufacturer made its first iconic bicycle. The Bastide frame was built from top quality English Reynolds tubing with lugs and fittings provided by BSA. (Birmingham Small Arms Company ). Bastide, was based at Boulevard de Clichy, Paris and turned these fittings into a totally superb racer. Leon (Jack) Meredith,UK Olympic Cycling Champion, of the Constrictor Tyre Company, was responsible for importing the first Bastides and displaying them at the 1913 Olympia Cycle show where they were the sensation of the show. The Bastide, though almost as expensive as top range cycles, was fitted with a single brake and gear and no trimmings and was lighter, slimmer and faster Weight 15lb. ( 6.8Kg) Bastide stopped making frames in 1936. Bastide was the bike that changed the style for road bikes in England for ever more after the First World War 1914-18 and this bicycle was used by Mr L Forde in Moorabbin Shire c1910A Racing Bicycle c1909 'BASTIDE"Frame Bastide Frame Stem ; Perfect / BUILT BY / CANADA CYCLES / & MOTOR Gear wheel ; BSAparis-bordeaux cycling road race, bicycles, bastide bicycles paris, birmingham small arms company uk , meredith leon jack , olympic cycling, road races, cycling clubs, cheltenham, moorabbin, victoria, geelong, werribee, whitehead clarice, whitehead eric, world war 1914-1918, early settlers, moorabbin shire, bentleigh, -

Plaque, A. H. Walker, COAT OF ARMS - Shire of Braybrook Victoria, Unknown date of manufacture
From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. Walker which is a true depiction of the Coat of Arms for the Shire of Braybrook. It is mainly blue, yellow and red coloured with black writing, and has images of a cow, sheep, and hay, and also indicates a reference to industry.Shire of Braybrook Victoria / Dieu Et Mon Droit / By Industry / A. Programme - Theatre Programme, Arms and the Man / by George Bernard Shaw, 1961
From the early 1950s, the Kew Repertory Players performed more substantial, if less spectacular fare in the Recreation Hall, and later in the new Kew City Hall, after the former’s demolition in 1960. Their repertoire ranged from plays by Noel Coward to J.B. Priestley. Many of their programmes, the earliest from 1953, and the last from 1965, form part of our collection.Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1970s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Programme issued by The Kew Repertory Players for a performance of Arms and the Man by George Bernard Shaw. Performances took place in the Kew City Hall in June 1961. The 8-page programme includes a cast list, some profiles, a synopsis and advertisements for local businesses.arms and the man, george bernard shaw, kew repertory players, arthur dear collection, performing arts -- kew -- victoria, kew city hall -- cotham road -- kew (vic.), theatre memorabilia -- kew (vic.) -
