Newspaper Clipping from The Mail, 18-6-1996, P3 - 24 hour TradingMaroondah Council has rejected a planning application for a licensed club complete with 50 poker machines and betting facilities, at the rear of North Ringwood Shopping Centre. The club was to have been developed by local real estate agent Alan Dickson, and located at the corner of Oban Road and Dockson Cres. A total of 96 objections were lodged with the council, and petitions with 2697 signatures were received. -

These six photos were taken in the grounds of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna in spring 1991. MAJ Ray Redman appears in his mess dress by the Roman fountain, serving a silver service morning tea to CPL Pat Drury, as a result of a losing bet on the 1991 Rugby League Grand Final. Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed Penrith, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Penrith reversed the result the following year against Canberra winning their first premiership. This occasion is covered on page 152 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.This is a set of six photographs of two Army Survey Regiment personnel in the grounds of Fortuna, Bendigo, 1991. Painting - Framed Painting, Sailing Ship 'Kosciusko'
Pall Mall Gazette, 6 April 1866 One day early in December between the hours of 5.44 and 6.15 A.M., four first-class ships, the Roxburgh Castle, the Sarah Grice, the Kosciusko, and the Omar Pasha, laden with wool and gold, left Port Phillip on a race for England. There was heavy betting on the result, the Omar Pasha being favourite. These vessels have now reached their destination, and it is interesting to note the respective length of their passages. The Omar Pasha arrived in the Downs on the 14th of February, seventy-two days; the Kosciusko on the 23rd, eighty-one days; the Roxburgh Castle on the 7th of March, one hundred and eleven days. The first and second vessels are Aberdeen built vessels, and belong to Messrs. Considered a ‘worthy’ councillor, William [Bill] Wishart was ‘blunt’ in words and actions during his period of civic service. He was concerned with a picturesque Kew. This included street lighting, macadamised roads and improved access to Melbourne. Often accused of being German, he asserted his Australian birth and Scottish heritage. He was a strong advocate for women’s rights, believed in compulsory voting, favoured prison reform, opposed religious instruction in State schools, betting including horse racing, Home Rule, alcohol and sought to establish a tourist bureau. Cr. Wishart was ‘unanimously’ supported to nominate for the vacated seat of Richmond in Victoria’s Legislative Council. He narrowly lost the vote. After a sudden death, he was buried with Presbyterian rites in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge.Admission ticket to a musical and bioscopic entertainment in the Recreation Hall, Wellington Street, Kew, on Empire Day, Friday 24 May 1907. Bags such as this one were used by bookmakers to collect and securely hold punters' bets at racing events. This bag belonged to Charlie Cox, a second-generation Australian bookmaker. His father, George Gordon Cox, ran bookmaking operations primarily during the 1920s and 1930s. After serving in the Air Force during the Second World War, Charlie entered the business during the 1940s, initially fielding at greyhound, trots and gallop meetings. In the early 1960s he moved to Melbourne, where he got his first big financial break when he was offered an interstate license to operate on the rails at all city tracks. He was a leading Melbourne bookmaker on the interstate rails racing circuit from the 1960s to the 1990s, from which period this bag originated.White painted leather bag with metal fastening mechanism. The White City Greyhound racing stadium was built at Tottenham in 1927, with the intention that mechanical lures and not live hares be used as pacemakers. The first meeting was held on 10 December 1927 but within 3 days, after strong lobbying by other sports bodies, the Victorian Government banned betting on greyhound racing if mechanical lures were used instead of live hares. This caused some financial problems to the shareholders. For a time the average weekly attendances were 9000, and races were held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Whippet Races, Goat Races, Monkeys on greyhounds, and Professional Foot racing were also tried to attract attendances. After 28 years of bureaucratic interference, and using live hares as greyhound pacemakers, the White City stadium held its last meeting on 29 December 1955. On 31 December the Victorian Government finally allowed betting on greyhound races that used mechanical lures. Manufacturing industry (Olex Cables) took over the White City site. Transport to the White City stadium was provided by train, with only a single platform available on the Down side of Tottenham, even though double train lines existed. Special train services were run from Flinders Street to the White City platform, and for a while a parcels coach was provided for the transport of dogs. As industry developed in the area some trains also stopped at the White City platform in the mornings and late afternoons to transport workers. In 1981 when the grade separation at Ashley Street next to the Tottenham station was completed, the new train lines on the Upper Level came into operation, and so the White City platform was closed down and eventually demolished. The above historical information was sourced from the booklet "GOING TO THE DOGS" by Tom Rigg.Greyhound racing has always been popular in Melbourne's western suburbs. The White City stadium in Tottenham was a major centre for the sport until 1955, enabling those who could not afford race horses to take part in an animal racing sport. The demolition of first the stadium and years later the railway platform, has relegated the name White City and its past relevance to the western suburbs, into history.Two low aerial photographs of the White City Coursing stadium (Greyhound racing), plus a CD containing the same two images as well as a few other local images. The Coursing stadium was located about 500 metres from the Tottenham railway station on the down line towards Sunshine station. The photographs are thought to be from circa late 1920's to early 1930's, and one shows the view from the north facing south, while the other from the west facing east. The latter also shows built up areas of West Footscray and beyond.Only on the negatives at the State Library. These photographs were taken at the official opening of the Orbost - Bairnsdale Railway Line. In 3150.4 L-R front " Mary Gilbert; Bet Gilbert (sitting with glasses); Pen Gilbert(Richardson); Marion Gilbert ( middle front little girl) About 1912 work began at Newmerella on clearing the track for the railway line from Bairnsdale to Orbost. A canvas town sprang up on the higher land adjacent to the river flats. Local farmers supplied meat, milk and fresh produce to the camp, as well as gaining employment carting and labouring. The line opened in 1916, the Orbost railway station being built on the Newmerella side of the river.This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. It is a pictorial record of a significant event in Orbost's history. On April 10 1916, the first scheduled train service left Orbost for Bairnsdale. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened to serve the agricultural and timber ndustry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. The Rev. Peter D. Blackwood was ordained in 1977 and his first placement was at Burwood Heights. He has had several placements, including as Presbytery Minister and Associate General Secretary of the Synod. He is now retired. This picture was taken after a church protest in Warrnambool. "Members of the Warrnabool UC walked home from church on Sunday 28 September, in a protest against Sunday racing. The 150-strong congregation left cars parked outside the church, which coincidentally blocked all car spots outside the local TAB. The vehicles were left parked throughout the afternoon, creating an inconvenience for punters wanting to place a quick bet. UC minister, the Rev. Port of Portland Collection Bradken, originally Bradford and Kendall, began as a steel foundry in Sydney in 1920 and produced BK anvils at its factories in Alexandria and Mascot NSW. Leslie Bradford (General Manager) and Jim Kendall (Chief Mechanical Engineer), two BHP steelworks employees, got lucky at the races one day in 1920 and pledged their £15,000 winnings to start a steel foundry business. The horse they backed, ‘Jack Findlay’ completed a remarkable sequence of five wins during 1919 and 1920. With each win Leslie Bradford, Jim Kendall and a group of friends rolled-over their bets. By January 24, 1920 they had won a small fortune. On April 28 1920, the group used their winnings to establish the Alloy Steel Syndicate and build a steel foundry in Alexandria, Sydney to take advantage of what they saw as an untapped potential for industrial growth. Bradford Kendall Ltd was incorporated on 20th March 1922.Metal blacksmiths anvil. An anvil is used by blacksmiths to forge and shape his work pieces. The conical horn is used for hammering curved work pieces. The anvil is a common tool of the blacksmiths (‘smithies’) and other metalworkers. There has been very little change in the basic design of the anvil since Greek and Roman times. KEVIN ‘BOOFA’ INNES By Lucy McCormick Kevin was a member of the celebrated Innes clan from Inglewood, in Central Victoria. “I think the first Innes’ came to Inglewood in 1851. My daughter used to say she can’t marry anyone from Inglewood, because she’s related to them all,” says Kevin. ‘Boofa’ is enjoying some well-earned relaxation on the couch after breaking a kneecap six or seven months ago in a track work incident. Not that it seems to be bothering him too much; he’s got plenty of time to keep up with the trots on television. “I do follow them,” Kevin says. “I don’t miss many, and I do have a bet. I like to sit in the chair and drive a race as much as anyone.” With an illustrious career both as a trainer and in the sulky, it’s a safe bet that Kevin Innes is a more than handy ‘grandstand driver’. His name is associated as a trainer/driver with many handy horses, including Lea Sands, Imatoff and Stormy Morn to name a few. Kevin is typically circumspect about his bigger triumphs, however that doesn’t seem to be what interests him the most. “I’ll tell you something,” he declares, doing just that, “I like winning with the horses that were no good. Some people never get a good horse. Imagine that. Luck is a very, very important thing. You have to have luck to buy a good horse at the sales, to get it going, keep it sound, find a race for it, find and owner and get a draw. And they still make a liar of you.” Funny, interesting or quirky stories seem to be of greater interest to Kevin, such as the time he had a strong chance in a standing start race – the favourite in the race being his only worry. “I told the owner it only had a 20-metre handicap – I couldn’t beat it off that,” he remembers. “So I was leading, waiting for the favourite to run past me. Toward the finish, I heard it coming, and it ran straight past all right – minus the driver. He’d fallen out of the cart and I won the race. Just lucky.” The Innes family have always been heavily involved in one sporting pursuit or another – Kevin himself being a champion bike rider of his time. “My Uncle Roy was a good bike rider, so he dared me to have a go. It turned out I was quite good at it as well.” So good, in fact that for many years Kevin was able to make a living from bike riding, riding the ‘board track’ for many years. “We trained hard. Bike riding was very big back then, we’d train and ride three or four times a week.” Kevin’s riding career spanned four Herald Sun Tours, a Warrnambool to Melbourne and a Sydney to Melbourne race, to name a few. “It definitely gets you in – it was long hours,” he muses. “But like anything, horse racing included, you only get back what you put in. We trained hard. I never drank, and I still don’t. I’ve seen that many athletes, great ones too, brought down by alcohol.” Lucky with injury too, Kevin can only remember a sore ankle – as well as the requisite scrapes and abrasions from tumbles on the wooden boards of the velodromes. He still enjoys watching all the big bike races when he can. “You can watch them race all over the world – France, Sweden, Germany. “To be honest I sit up and watch them with my son and we get just as much of a kick looking at the countryside than anything else. It’s so different to when I was racing.” Betting on the bike racing was big in Kevin’s day as well, and some of the bookies Kevin saw betting on the bike racing, he saw at the Showgrounds betting on the trots on a Friday or Saturday night. “Racing was different back then. There would be twelve thousand people at the showgrounds – they don’t have to come anymore, it’s just as easy to watch it on the TV.” Kevin remembers in those days that drivers had to ‘weigh in’ as well – everyone who drove needed to weigh ten stone (just under 65 kilograms). It’s something he remembers fondly. “I know not everyone will.” Kevin won’t be drawn on the subject of favourite drivers, either. “Look. Driving is different now. No disrespect to current drivers, but you had to think a lot more on a three furlong track than they do now on the bigger tracks. You had to drive with brains. And I really believe that good horses make good drivers. The horses are very good these days. Today’s drivers – your Gavin Langs, Chris Alfords – they’re thinkers, and brains will beat brawn every time. The girls are just as good now too. You only have to look at Kerryn Manning.” A garrulous and popular character, Kevin has trained horses for the likes of legendary Richmond player Jack Dyer, and also spent his fair share of time hosting sportsman’s nights, holding his own with the likes of Ron Barassi. On one such night, they had flown in a light aircraft to their destination. During their show, Kevin noticed their pilot, sitting in the front row, laughing appreciatively. There was one problem. He had a beer in his hand, and was consuming it with some enthusiasm. As the night wore on, the pilot became more and more inebriated, and Kevin became more and more disturbed, knowing that this was the same pilot who was to fly them home when they finished. Unbeknownst to Kevin, however, the flight had been cancelled and the pilot hadn’t told anyone, instead deciding to take full advantage of his client’s hospitality. For now, Kevin is happy living in Inglewood with partner Barbara. Son Grant and daughter Carla aren’t far away (both work at the Bendigo Harness track, and Carla has held both a trainer and driver’s licence). His granddaughter, Barclay Sands, was born on the same day of the demise of their star performer, Lea Sands, and may give the biggest hint yet just how important the world of harness racing is to Kevin ‘Boofa’ Innes. Stephen Spark compiled horses performance records starting in 1983 on his typewriter. Avian Again: Riverina Herald, Tuesday August 19, 1952 Mr Harry Holmfield's pacer Avian Again made a spectacular return to racing on Saturday night at Harold Park when he took one of the main races in ; his first appearance this season. Bookmakers were ready for his visit to Sydney for they did not bet better than 6/4 On. The Ech uca owned horse, driven by Gor don Rothacker, was never in danger and led almost through out to score comfortably by over one length. Sky Pilot, the N.Z. pacer, who has won his last three races at Harold Park, challenged at one stage but was easily beaten off. Mr Holmfield is very impress ed with trotting in Sydney where the attendances eclipse those at the galloping meetings in the day. Avian Again's race on Saturday night was worth ,£600—£450 to the winning own er. 'Next month there will be a race with six heats worth £700 each and £2500 for the final. It is likely that Avian Again in this race will strike his half-brother, the famous Avian Derby, who Has not been retired to the stud as expected. Next week Avian Again will race in the fastest class at Har old Park from the scratch mark. He has yet to appear at the. Melbourne Showgrounds and has been shrewdly placed. . Later in the season he will be taken to Perth where the Inter Dominion championships will, be held in February.Avian Again raced from 1951 (4yo) through to 1957 (10yo). The Beechworth Burke Museum

Ray Stone was born in 1927, growing up in Beechworth as the oldest of eight children, but spent much of his life travelling, which he recalls in this oral history. Although he started working at the Beechworth Tannery with his father, he joined the Navy before he was of age in 1944 to support the war effort, and upon returning to Beechworth gave up on the Tannery after half a day to continue working jobs across Victoria instead. He talks extensively about watching Beechworth's famous Wheelbarrow race, where Tony Evans bet Tom Parkinson that the latter would not be able to push the former in a wheelbarrow from the Beechworth Post Office to Mt Buffalo in eight days. Calling himself a "helper all [his] life", he discusses the way many towns he worked in would come together to support struggling families, especially widows. In comparison, he suggests that the Beechworth of 2000 is much less community-orientated. He also discusses the economic changes he's witnessed around Beechworth, from the difficulties during the Depression while he was a child, to business improvements at the Tannery and Brewery, to the tourism boom. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Ray Stone's account of his life is historically and socially significant to the region of Beechworth for the way it describes changes in the town over the twentieth century. It covers themes including community relationships, business development, and cultural life. It makes this commentary in comparison to nearby regions such as the Snowy Mountains. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. This postcard was sent from France during World War One WW1 to Violet Holmes [mother and aunty of other WW1 soldiers], by the son of a neighbouring Ascot Tourello District Family, the Wrigley Family. Violet inherited "Sauchieburn" an Ascot property on the death of her husband William Holmes in 1914. On her death this property was to be left to their 4 children and administered by a relative till the youngest child turned 27. As young boys, Violet's husband William, and his brother Henry, lived with their Aunt Catherine Coghill and Uncle William Coghill at ‘Sauchieburn’ Ascot. The Coghills had no children of their own. He and his brother Edward started a stock and station business at Clunes. Henry and Violet Holmes subsequently inherited "Sauchieburn" from Catherine (nee Holmes) and William Coghill, direct descendants of the Coghills Creek, Ascot, Tourello pioneer settler Captain William Coghill [Jane Dyer, May 2024] Catherine and her brother Edward Carter Holmes drowned at sea.This is an extract from the Korumburra Times, Wednesday June 6, 1956: The fated travellers wrecked off N.S.W. ‘On May 29th, 1886 in bright moonlight the Ly-e-Moon, the pride of the Australian coastal fleet, broke her back on the treacherous rocks of Green Cape, off the NSW coast. Eighty souls perished within range of the beacon rays of the lighthouse, including representatives of the earliest families ever to settle in Poowong. The passengers. On the main deck, Mr Edward Holmes, a Poowong grazier and former owner of ‘Wombalano’. He had sold this property with the object of going to Queensland and settling there. The proceeds of sale amounting to 1,200 pounds in gold sovereigns were under lock and key in the Purser's Office. Mr Holmes, although advanced in years, had unformed plans to invest his money in some Queensland enterprise. In the meantime he would visit his married daughter and [his] two sons, who had previously settled in Queensland. Broadcasting Station 3CV, Maryborough. A souvenir of the opening of the New Studios and Offices of Central Victoria Broadcasters Pty Ltd. March 2nd, 1956. Established 1956, offices in Burke Street, opening coincides with the stations 21st birthday, March 2 for the former celebration, October 26 for the latter. Coverage included Bendigo, Ballarat, Daylesford, Castlemaine and Maryborough. 3CV plays active part in assisting charities and hospitals at Maryborough, Daylesford, Maldon and Dunolly. Active Women's Radio Club with branches in country centres adds strength to station's charitable efforts. Opening 3CV's new premises will widen the scope of the station's charitable efforts, and stronger link with Australian Commercial Broadcasting stations. Coal fields at Wonthaggi. 1917 a public meeting was convened in an effort to stem the tide of adversity. Mayor George Frost, M.L.A., decision to form a Progress Association, a policy of secondary industry was decided upon and committees were appointed, James L Drew much credit is due. Maryborough's move for rejuvenation was revolutionary, because apart from Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong, it was regarded as so much presumption that industry could be expected to function with success in a country town. Governments were unsympathetic. Maryborough & district people showed determination to succeed and their faith in their town. Employment and economic security provided by the industries outweighed the debt. Maryborough's general position is that it is no longer dependent upon one particular phase of activity. The first of the industries to be formed in 1918 was the Butter Factory. The nearer dairy companies did not take kindly to the prospect of another opposition company taking supplies from their districts, and in the first few years of establishment completion made the going hard for the management. But adopting a conservative policy and placing all profits to reserve I the first six years of operation headway was gradually made. Thus it was a red letter day for the company in 1925 when the first dividend of 5 percent was paid.1955 dividend of 10 per cent. Operating it's own trucks the dairy serviced local dairymen up to 40 miles. Maryborough Knitting mills est. 1923, having transferred from Clunes. Out bid Ballarat and Bendigo to the industry. The mill has what is probably the largest circular underwear plant in the Commonwealth, which is conservatively valued at 198,913 pounds. It produces between four and five million garments each year, worth over one million pounds. The company has established subsidiary mills at Dunolly, Talbot and Avoca. The company also assisted in the establishment of the Interknit Hosiery Co. Ltd., Clunes. The Maryborough Flour Mills is the second oldest of Mayborough's industries. It was built by Mr Cadwallader over 70 years ago. It was later sold to Mr. A Land and then to Jas. Minifie & Co. It had a somewhat 'in-and -out' existence until purchased in 1923 by Messrs. Willersdorf and Forbes, of Eddington. In 1939 the firm began to build silos for the storage of bulk wheat and the present storage capacity is 100,000 bushels. 1944 power was changed from steam to electricity. The mill has an out put of 20 sacks an hour. 1938 a chaff mill was built, and now is regarded as one of the best in Victoria. Its output in one year of approximately 6,800 tons is a State record for a single cutter. During this 30 year period Patience and Nicholson Limited has grown with Maryborough and is now one of the major key industries of Australia. The P&N brand covers precision tools - taps, dies and twist drills - indispensable to the country's economy, and quality is acknowledged equally by an air craft factory in Canada, a dockyard in Thailand, a railway workshop in New Zealand, no less than by our own Australian industries. Maryborough can be proud of the part played by P&N in war when, geared to the needs of the times, it poured countless millions of tools into defence factories and to the armed forces of the Allies, and now in peace when it is providing, hydro-electric undertakings and the manufacture of cars and tractors. From 1858, W Phelan & Sons Pty Ltd has made phenomenal and spectacular growth, becoming incorporated as a private company in 1929. It is without doubt the greatest private development in the history of Maryborough. 1940 joinery manufacture was commenced. The company entered the Ready Built Housing field in `950 - and in 1951 established a factory at Cairns, Northern Queensland to overcome the manufacturing difficulties being experienced due to the shortage of plywood in Victoria. Present activities include: Ready Built Housing Factory, on-site building, a modern joinery, timber yard, drying kilns, etc., and plumbing & electrical & engineering services, a door and panel factory at Cairns, retail hardware store, Melbourne Sales Depot. Hedges & Bell Pty Ltd were est 1945, with a staff of 40 employees are the largest printing firm outside the metropolitan area. English wooden ship model, Cutty Sark replica, circa 1997
This replica ship was modelled to exact scale by Denis Paraskevatos with the original basic kit enhanced by a large number of brass and mahogany wooden parts used and showing on two labels positioned at the base of the model. These replica parts were specifically designed and constructed by D. Paraskevatos with the help of his family. This model along a large number of others have been displayed at the Victorian Parliament for ten days from the 18th March 2002 (Queens Hall) to the 28th March 2002, and the Melbourne Town Hall from 19th to 27th August 2004. The history of the 65 meter British vessel named Cutty Sark is as follows: THE CUTTY SARK (history) The “Cutty Sark” was a British clipper ship, aptly named of course as a [clipper for its speed ], which was built in 1869 on the [river Clyde in Scotland ] by the Jock Willis Shipping Corporation. It was primarily used to transport tea from China to Great Britain, as well to a lesser extent later in its life, wool from Australia; however, with the advent of the steam engines and the creation also of the Suez Canal in 1869, its days of operation as a sailing vessel were numbered, as the steam ships were now prevailing as technologically advanced cargo carriers through the shorter route by the Suez Canal to China. In fact, within a few years of its operation, as its delegation in the tea industry was declining, it was assigned primarily the duty of transporting wool from Australia to England, but this activity was thwarted again by the steam ships, as they were enabled by their technologies to travel faster to Australia. Eventually, the “Cutty Sark” in 1895 was sold to a Portuguese company called “Ferreira and Co.”, where it continued to operate as a cargo ship until 1922, when it was purchased on that year by the retired sea captain Wilfred Dowman, who used it as a training ship in the town of Falmouth in Cornwall. After his death, the ship was conferred as a gesture of good will to the “Thames Nautical Training College” in Greenhithe in 1938, where it became an auxiliary cadet training ship, outliving its usefulness as a training vessel by 1954, and permanently [being dry docked in Greenwich, London, ] for public viewing. Of course, the “Cutty Sark” was not the only tea clipper constructed and owned by the Jock Willis Corporation, as there were others who were also used for the transportation of tea from China to Great Britain. Noteworthy additionally in its impressive resume is the fact that, the “Cutty Sark” was not only valued and admired for its speed, but also for its prestige that it afforded to its owners, [as media coverage was insatiable during a tea race that was regarded a national sporting event, with fiscal bets being placed on a predicted winning ship ]. Disappointingly, even though the English tea clippers were the best in the world at the time in terms of marine design, they had never won a tea race, and Jock Willis was certainly determined to achieve this goal, as the American clippers were considered the fastest in the tea trade. Nonetheless, the British clippers were proven to be formidable opponents to their American counterparts in the tea trade, when in 1868 a British tea clipper called [“Thermopylae”, managed to travel from the port of London to Melbourne, in only sixty one (61) days, which Jock Willis was hoping to improve on such a feat with the “Cutty Sark” ] . Remarkably, the maximum speed that the “Cutty Sark” could achieve was 17.5 knots in spite of the challenges of the unpredictable winds, if any at times, and the high seas or ferocious storms. Interestingly, [the “Cutty Sark’s” greatest recorded achievement in distance in twenty four (24) hours was three hundred and sixty three (363) nautical miles ], which meant that it was averaging approximately fifteen (15) knots; much faster obviously than the recorded twenty four (24) hour distance of the “Thermopylae” which had accomplished three hundred and fifty (358) nautical miles. .... ______________ -*- Please read the complete history of the Cutty Sark vessel by Maria Paraskevatos in one of the attachments provided with this exhibit. This model along with a large number of others was constructed by the Master craftsman Denis Paraskevatos, in Melbourne and has a historic, artistic significance because of the time and artist efforts in construction.The English Cutty Sark replica model is a wooden replica scaled at 1:25. The wood is mahogany and it is normally displayed in a glass covered enclosure.
