These three photographs were most likely taken from the 1950s to the 1970s. The RASvy surveyor in each photograph was taking angular measurements with the observer recording their readings on a booking form. They were probably employed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations or the surveyors may have been in training. Photo .1P was possibly taken at Mount Alexander in Central Victoria, a location close to Bendigo, as the stone cairn in the background of the photo appears to be identical to the cairn presently located on top of the mountain. Personnel and location have been confirmed on another photo in the collection with annotation. These three photographs are of surveyors in the field undertaking observations using theodolites. All travel was mostly by walking and school children walked to town each November 11 Memorial Service.The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage. "The Pinkerton family is remembered in Melton in part due to the historic graves of the original settler, Margaret Pinkerton, and four of her grandchildren, which were marked by a memorial cairn in 1931. Changes to sewage flood zoning in the area in the 1990s necessitated that these burials be relocated. Members of the Melton & District Historical Society oversaw a project to relocate the Pinkerton graves and cairn 200 metres from their original site to their current resting place at Mount Cottrell. This relocation ceremony took place on 8 November 1992, with the participation of local school students and with Pinkerton descendants playing a central role. This occasion also marked the opening of the Pinkerton Forest Project, which saw 50 hectares of degraded woodland in Surbiton Park protected for regeneration". The Queenstown Cemetery (1861-1981) is a pioneer and miner’s cemetery, established during the gold rush of the 1850’s at the site of the first mining village of the Caledonia Diggings. A Cemetery Trust administers the cemetery with the support of The Friends and Relations of Queenstown Cemetery and endeavours to maintain and preserve it for future generations. This was erected in 1912 by the Surrey Hills Progress Association to commemorate "one of Surrey Hills most highly respected and revered citizens". The rotunda was demolished in the 1970s. A bronze plaque in tribute to John Gray is now on a stone cairn in the gardens. John Gray was a local citizen very active in community affairs who had died in 1909. The Brass Band rehearsed in the room below which also became a meeting room for many local groups.B&W photocopied image of the John Gray Memorial Rotunda in the Surrey Gardens. This is a set of 10 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in the Northern Territory and North Queensland in 1959 – 1960. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control. In this era surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and tellurometers to measure base line distances between survey stations. Laplace survey observations seen in Photo .1P was a series of precise observations carried out at geodetic survey stations to determine astronomic latitudes, longitudes and azimuths to achieve maximum precision in the survey network. Laplace observations were necessary in a geodetic network at every 6th survey station, however the National Mapping Council specified at this time the spacing would be ideally between 4-6 survey stations. The cairn shown in photo .4P was built by RASvy as a landmark over a trigonometric survey station. It was dismantled in 1960 to enable re-occupation and survey observations. "James Pinkerton, described by fellow settler Isaac Batey as ‘a fine old Scotish [sic] gentleman’, and his wife Margaret established ‘Chamois Ponds’ on Kororoit Creek in the Keilor district in 1840.44 After a fire in 1848, the Pinkerton family moved further west to a holding called Yaloke, on the Werribee River in the Melton district.45 Today, the Surbiton Park water treatment plant operates on part of the Yaloke run. Eva Grant was a member of the Kew Historical Society. Three albums in the collection were created by her, this one, the third created between 1964 and 1966. They were donated to the Society by her daughter in 2010. Memorial built to the memory of s.s.Casino and the 10 lives lost when the ship on the morning of 10 July 1932 after attempting to berth at Apollo Bay jetty in heavy seas pierced her hull with the fluke of her anchor She put about again and headed for the beach but sank. It was unveiled on 8 July 1934 by Mrs. C.A. Melhuish, daughter of Captain Thomas Boyd the first master of the Casino. It is bluestone cairn supporting the Casino's propeller and the town wreck bell. On June 2, 1992 Tony Carr presented Elanora resident Jim Kibble with a plaque commemorating the anniversary of the battle. Also in attendance was Tony Thompson, a fellow Bullecourt veteran. A typed page providing an overview of both the battle and presentation is included. The plaque reads: Bullecourt 1917-1992 Sacred to the memory of the 10,000 members of the Australian Imperial Force who were killed and wounded in the two battles of Bullecourt, April - May 1917. This Journal "The bad bit across the River" was written by - LtCol HPG Clews in 1934 and is about his experiences around the Colo River approximately 60 miles NW of Sydney, NSW. LtCol Clews was a remarkable man and his achievements were just as remarkable. He is affectionately known as "The Major." He served in the British Army 1909 - 1911 with the Sherwood Foresters. He then served in the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1912 - 1949 and then served as the Senior Surveyor with the Snowy Mountains Authority from 1950-1958. A Survey Cairn is errected in Khancoban to record his life 1890 - 1980. This Journal records the field trip to establish Survey Control in very rugged country by a handful of party members on foot.
