The Royal Winton brand has always been synonymous with quality and design and has roots in Stoke-on-Trent, England that go back over one hundred years. Originally known as Grimwade Brothers it was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade. Leonard had shown a natural talent for modelling pottery and it was in this field that his infant business began, in 1885. The evolution of the stiff shirt collar occurred in the 1830s when the detachable collar was "invented." At this time, the detachable collars were simply normal shirt collars like you’d see today, but sold separately from the shirt itself and needed to be kept in a container to keep them clean and accessible. The detachable collars were a way to avoid the weekly laundry. Because collars and cuffs were both the most visible parts of shirts and the parts most likely to get dirty, separating them allowed people to do the shirt equivalent of only washing your armpits after you go to the gym. That meant that the main body of the shirt could remain soft while the collar and cuffs that were visible could be starched and shaped. The popularity of detachable collars and starched collars, in general, began to fade in the 1920s and 30s. As shirt styles began to change. This collar holder would have been used in the early to mid 20th century in the days when men's shirts often had detachable collars so that the collars could be changed each day and the shirt part would not have to be washed so frequently. The metal crest on the holder with a crown on top suggests that the wearer of the detachable collars could have held a Government office or been a member of one of the Defence Forces. This collar holder has no known local provenance but is kept as a memento of the days (80 to 100 years ago and more) when men wore shirts with detachable collars. This is a rectangular-shaped leather object which has been folded over once to form a wallet with an extra piece at the end to close over the wallet. The top piece closing device has two metal press studs. The insides of the wallet are lined with buff-coloured material hemmed with cotton stitching with two extra pieces folding over to hold the collars. The wallet contains one white collar with one collar stud. On the front of the wallet is gold-coloured printing and attached is a metal badge or crest. "Every Sunday until I was about 12 (mid-1950s), there would be roast lamb with all the trimmings, good homemade mint sauce, roast potato and pumpkin, parsnip, tomato and onion pie with breadcrumb topping, fresh green peas and gravy. Monday night was Shepherd’s Pie, and I looked forward to it. The cold meat was cut up and fed through the mincing machine fastened to the table at Riversdale Rd. I don't remember it ever coming out at Walsh Street. Maybe Patricia was over cold roast lamb at that stage. I loved turning the handle and watching the meat squidge out, could hardly call it mince, some onion and lastly a slice of bread to push the bits through. Then the mincer all came apart, was washed and put away until next Monday. The meat and onion tossed with leftover gravy, mash on top, loads of butter, etched with a fork tine and baked in the oven. The Kettle Drum Drenching Gun was invented and predominately used in the 1940s and 1950s. This Drench Gun was constructed by Moffat-Virtue Ltd, an Australian company formed by John Moffat and William Wright Virtue. Moffat-Virtue Ltd were a Sydney company whose products, including windmills and shearing machinery, were well known in rural NSW throughout the mid twentieth century. The company was taken over by Fire Fighting Enterprises Ltd in June 1966 (Rudder, G 2020). The Drench Gun was likely used to drench sheep with carbon tetrachloride for internal parasite control. These guns were widely used in Australia. There were problems with the product, however, which contributed to its demise. On hot days and if the sheep struggled while being drenched, some fluid would go into the wind-pipe and into the lungs of the sheep, sometimes with fatal results. At times nearly one-third of a flock could be found dead. Inexperienced operators, overdose and weather were often blamed for the deaths (Davidson, K 2012).
