After WW1 my grandfather George Arthur Scattergood, along with his brother Charles Scattergood worked for the Tramways. George was a grippy and Charley was a conductor (I think). They were all part of the Tramways band and I found this photo recently among my fathers papers. George Scattergood played the bass drum and is sitting in the centre front beside his drum. He had just returned from 4 years at the front surviving Gallipoli and then sent to the Western front in Possier etc. He often said that being in the infantry band saved his sanity and that on his return joining the Tramways Band gave his life new meaning. He also played in the Malvern City band. 4 years in the trenches without a break must have been shocking so thank you to the Tramways Band. Inspector's Cap - MMTB - green cloth exterior, brown cotton interior lining with black leather pad on the inside, black leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a black cord at the front half of the cap terminating in two small MMTB gold metal buttons on either side, black plastic external peak and green on the inside of the cap. Hat band has two gold bands or braids around the outside of the cap. Has a manufacturers lable inside the cap - made by Mountcastle Pty Ltd of Melbourne St South Brisbane. Has two holes where the badge would have been fitted. Set of two uniform coat buttons (approx. 16mm dia) are made by Buttons of Birmingham UK. Both button have metal eye hooks on the rear. Signed by the Stores Clerk - F. Wraith. 2 - List of instruments purchased with the loan, Serial numbers and Manufacturer. Signed by F. Wraith as Treasurer, F. Keane? as Secretary and W. F. Allen as Bandmaster. 3. Agreement typed, dated 6/7/1918 between the MBCTT and the Coburg Electric Tramways Band, to be repaid at 50 pounds per annum. Signed and sealed by each of the 20 members. Journal or ticket record wallet, consisting of two very heavy and hard pieces of brown coloured leather joined by a sewn (brown cotton) lighter piece of leather to form foldable wallet. The outside covers have been polished. Used to hold the ticket records or trip journals of a conductor. Originally stamped for use by North Melbourne cable tram depot, no. 101 and then "No. 67" or on rear No. 205 with other numbers stamped out. Has many nicks in the leather to hold elastic bands. Probably made when the MMTB introduced paper tickets onto the cable trams. On the inside has the Fare Section table for East Preston - City (via St Georges Rd and Latrobe St") - sheet 17 - which matches the 1955 Sections and Fares Book - see Reg Item 1207.
