In 1865 Melbourne was visited by a fully rigged steam sloop flying The Confederate Ensign; at the time the American Civil War was in progress. Samuel Amess feted Captain Waddell and his crew although some people were against The Confederate cause. The Cairn was erected to commemorate the sowing of the first wheat in Victoria by Liet. Grant. Charlie Richardson was the son of William Richardson and grandson of Joseph Richardson who arrived on Phillip Island in 1868. Mr Charlie Richardson was for many years the Mate of the Rhyll-Stony point Ferry. The home of Captain Loch at Rhyll was built in the 1860s from timber from deserted cottages on the Island, one of which Capt. Redcliffe House was a Guest House in 1924 and in 1937 opened its doors to under-privileged children. In 1950 Redcliffe House was divided into flats.
