Photograph, Major-General Sir John Gellibrand K.C.B.,D.S.O. & Bar, 194
Photograph of General Sir John Gellibrand and L/- Stan Savige (at far right) at an unknown event that appears to be also attended by a mayor. From Wikipedia: Major General Sir John Gellibrand, KCB, DSO & Bar (5 December 1872 – 3 June 1945) was a senior Australian Army officer in the First World War, Chief Commissioner of the Victoria Police from 1920 to 1922, and a member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Tasmanian Division of Denison for the Nationalist Party from 1925 to 1928. Concerned about the plight of fellow ex-servicemen, whose businesses were often failing, Gellibrand banded together with like-minded individuals to form the Hobart Remembrance Club. This organisation aimed to support ex-servicemen by providing employment and support for their businesses. The Hobart Club inspired the formation of Legacy Australia in Melbourne, which over time became a national movement, expanding its scope to the care of ex-servicemen's widows and their families. Sir John Gellibrand is considered to have influenced Stanley Savige to commence the process to form Legacy in September 1923. Melbourne was the first Legacy club to form.Black and white photo of General Sir John Gellibrand.Handwritten on the reverse: 'General Sir John Gellibrand. SGS at rear' in blue pen. Containers, tin 'John Bull' Tyre Repair, mid 20thC
John Cecil Burton and his brother Cecil Hubert formed The Leicester Rubber Company in 1906, to sell imported cycle tyres. The Company's patriotic 'John Bull' trade mark came into force a few years later in 1908. In 1915 the Rubber Company started to manufacture its own bicycle and pram tyres at its Evington Valley Road site in Leicester, and in 1928 they started to mass produce car and motorcycle tyres at the site. The name was changed to the John Bull Rubber Company in 1934, and in 1937 an associated company was formed to manufacture rubber to metal components - Metalastic. In 1955 the John Bull group companies merged, and in 1958 the company became part of the Dunlop Rubber Company. An empty blue tin with a hinged lid for 'John Bull' Tyre repair outfitLid top ; JOHN BULL Reg. Document - Diary of John Clarke 1850 to 1883, John Clarke, Personal diary of John Clarke, 1850 to 1883
The wreck site identified as the Columbine, a two masted brig built in 1839 in Aberdeen, Scotland and wrecked on the 1st April 1854 at Ocean Grove, Victoria, was formally reported to Heritage Victoria as located on the 15th January 2003 by Peter Ferrier and Don Love. As the site is over 75 years old it is automatically protected under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. This diary is important as it outlines the eye witness account of the last moments of the Barque Columbine which is primarily of historic, technical, social and archaeological significance internationally and to the State of Victoria. It is a unique original account of that episode in early migrant history of Victoria and of Australia.A small leather bound black diary containing entries by John Clarke from 1843 to 1883, recording aspects of his life in Australia from the wreck of the Colombine as a child [approx 13 y.o.a.] to his experiences working in the gold fields and around the Geelong area. Container - Torpedo Bottle, Last quarter of the 19th century
This bottle has come from the aerated waters factory of John Fletcher of Warrnambool. This factory in Koroit Street was established in the mid 19th century by John Davis. As a young boy John Fletcher worked at the cordial factory of John Rowley in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and then worked for a number of years for John Davis at his Union Cordial Factory. In 1885 John Fletcher succeeded John Davis and continued in this business until 1930. The business was then taken over by Ralph Reeves. John Fletcher manufactured aerated waters, soda, tonic waters, lemonade, ginger ale, hop beer, hop bitters, sarsaparilla and cordials. The bottle would have been sealed with a cork stopper. The torpedo shape of the bottle would ensure that it was stored on its side, keeping the cork moist so that it didn't shrink and cause the bottle to leak its contents. The bottle is significant for its unusual torpedo shape and for being sold by the long standing John Fletcher's soft drink business in Warrnambool who was a prominent soft drinks manufacturer in Warrnambool for over 40 years.Torpedo shaped green glass bottle, name of manufacture of contents, John Fletcher Late and J. Album, John Chapman, A Photographic History of Auburn Heights Recreation Club / by John Chapman, c.1988
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Chapman J & C 1999, The history of the Auburn Heights Recreation Club, 1904 to 1908. Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation. An important photographic history of the Auburn Heights Recreation Club 1904-88, compiled by and presented to the Club by John Chapman, 25 May 1989.
