Bendigo Historical Society Inc.Administrative record - Ledger of Groceries, 1929-1937
Initially John Matchett had a grocery store in Pall Mall. In 1893, he advertised as a hay and corn dealer. When he retired to a farm in Kamarooka, the business was taken over by his son Robert Matchett (1864-1928). In 1904 the business moved to the Corner of Mitchell St., and Bath Lane. As well as a grocers this was a wine and spirit merchant. After Robert Snr. died the shop and the liquor licence was transferred to his son Robert Jnr. Erected in 1888 by Robert Milburn and family, the coffee palace on the corner of Mollison and Mitchell Streets was opposite the entrance to the railway station and as such provided ready access for travellers. Built at a cost of L4000, it consisted of 40 rooms that provided retail outlets and a ballroom on the ground floor and accommodation on the upper level. In 1945 it was converted to provided hostel accommodation for 43 student teachers. The building was demolished in the 1980's.An ink and pencil drawing of the Bendigo Coffee Palace signed by Bill Klemmer in 1968. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. United iron works: taken in 1900. Abraham Roberts first established himself as a blacksmith in Wills Street, Sandhurst. Later his sons Abraham junior and William joined the business and it traded as the United Iron Works. With hard work the foundry grew until it covered three acres bound by Wills , King and Mitchell Streets. The firm established itself throughout the colony for excellence in their work. Draft Affidavit of Executors states Canning Esther Isabell died 26 Nov 1893 at Golden Square. Her Will was dated 29 Oct 1893 at Golden Square and appointed Stone, Henry, Sheepwash Creek, Eucalyptus Manufacturer and Tatchell, George Henry, Williamson St. Solicitor as Executors..
