The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958. This photo is of Annesley Home for the Aged at 692-694 Whitehorse Road. It was originally a Methodist, later a Uniting Church facility. The new section in the photo was part of an extension built in 1958. The Queen Anne / Edwardian brick attic home was built in c1908 for William Pilkington, a manufacturer and was called 'St Martins'. Ownership stayed in this family until c1950. A new brick veneer 2 storey building sits adjacent to a red brick Edwardian home. A Queen Anne / Edwardian brick attic home was built on No 694 in 1908 for William Pilkington, a manufacturer and was called 'St Martins'. Ownership stayed in this family until c1950. It was retained as part of the facility. Alan Holt's register of 3127 properties list 34 residents in 1980, of which all but 3 were female. The property was replaced by apartments in c2018 but had ceased function as a nursing home quite a number of years prior to this and in the interim appeared to be used for temporary accommodation. Stan Smith, then of 3 Vincent Street, on his father’s horse in Mont Albert Road in about 1916. Mr Charles Smith was an insurance officer whose area was from Burke to Elgar Road; he used his phaeton for transport. Oral testimony - Stan Smith: “We had a stable for the horse near the house and a yard but we tethered the horse at the end of a long rope on paddocks in Empress Road- the area from Mont Albert Road to Guildford Road. We used to put in an iron peg. Some horses were tethered similarly in various paddocks but not a lot of people had horses by this time. A few cows grazed around them.” The picket fence on the left and the trees were those of ‘Monserrat’ – the Parer home, now entered from 26a Wandsworth Road as the Mont Albert Road frontage was sold off many years ago. Quamby was built in 1898. From 1900/1903-1924 it was the home of Andrew Sherar and family. From 1924-1960s it operated as Mosgiel Hospital under the direction of Matron Elizabeth Anderson. Until Box Hill Hospital opened most Surrey Hills children were born at Mosgiel or at Nethercourt Hospital in Wilson Street or later in Union Road when Matron Tank moved her hospital here. Mosgiel Hospital was demolished c 1975 after it was sold by Box Hill Hospital. It was replaced by units. Andrew Sherar was conductor of the Wyclif Church choir for many years and was a member of the Melbourne Liedertafel. Isie Sherar was organist at Wyclif Church and also taught piano in Union Road. Connie Sherar was in the Wyclif choir and married Ernest Swan, an elocutionist and orator. Dorothy Sherar was a pianist and accompanist. Elsie Sherar was also in the Wyclif choir and was a soloist; she later moved to Templestowe. The property is identified as 'Strathmore', the home of Joseph Sutton Crow and his wife Winifred (Jessie) Temby, whom he married in 1910. Joseph Sutton Crow: (1881-1969) - Joseph Sutton Crow gained his Diploma of Music from the Marshall Hall Conservatorium, the forerunner to the Melbourne University Conservatorium, in 1907. He taught both piano and organ and was organist and choirmaster in several churches. However it was as a fine administrator that Sutton Crow made a significant contribution to music in Melbourne. From 1910-1920 he was Secretary and Librarian of the Music Department at the University of Melbourne and from 1920 was the Secretary and Assistant Director of the Conservatorium of Music. From 1919 he was also Secretary of the Australian Music Examinations Board. He married lyric soprano, Jessie Temby and moved to ‘Strathmore’, 75 Victoria Crescent, Mont Albert in 1924 and lived there until 1952. In c1926 he was one of those behind establishing the public appeal to raise a million shillings to go towards the establishment of a permanent Symphony Orchestra. The appeal successfully raised both £4000 and the profile of orchestral music in Melbourne. The result was the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra, which later became the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and from 1926-1939 he was its manager. Close local musical contemporaries were violinist Stanislau de Tarczynski and pianist Edward Goll, both of whom lived in Mont Albert. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Beryl was born on 1 March 1916; she married Lance Young in 1939. She is listed at 20 Barton Street as a milliner in 1937 at which time she would have been 21 years old. As she married 2 years later it can be assumed that her career as a milliner was relatively short. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families. Archie and Ruby Harker were connected to the Wieland Family through Ruby's sister Thelma who married Stan Wieland. The photo is of the coach house at 'St. Abbs', 33 York Street. John Inglis Lothian, publisher, bought St Abbs in 1903 and lived here with his family until 1908. Prior to this the property had been part of Isiah Ainger's farm. The San Miguel family lived there from 1911-1923 and in 1926 Thomas Lothian bought 'St Abbs' and his family lived there until 1974. As the donor was Miss Jean Lothian it is assumed that the photo was taken during one of the periods the Lothian family occupied the property and more likely during the earlier period. ‘Strathmore’ Victoria Crescent (dem.) Joseph Sutton Crow and his wife Jessie (nee Temby) bought this property which had belonged to the Purbrick family in 1924. Sutton was an amateur ‘planner and landscape designer’ and had much pleasure in planning the use of their garden of 100 feet by 400 feet. While part remained rural with sheep, an orchard and vegetable garden, he laid out sweeping designs for the front garden which Jessie enjoyed converting into a garden worthy of display and which did gain prizes in the Herald Garden competitions of the 1930s. They entertained friends and often had as guests University Conservatorium staff and visiting musical personnel. They also opened the garden for local church fund-raising functions. Children, Jean and Ray, had areas set out for their recreation with pets and activities areas. The donor was their daughter. The house has been demolished but was associated with the Jacobs family. The Jacobs family lived in Surrey Hills from c 1895-1903 (ref: electoral rolls); by 1909 they were in Gippsland at Toora where Henry Atwood Jacobs was a storekeeper. They had returned to Surrey Hills by 1924 (ref: electoral roll) and were living at 22 Suffolk Road. Family details: Capt Jacobs was appointed to the Nunawading Roads Board in 1900; in 1902 he as a member of a deputation to the Minister of Public Works regarding municipal severance. He was in favour of Surrey Hills being a separate municipality. Amy (Amelia) Jacobs was the daughter of Capt Jacobs and his first wife, Eleanor Dobson Mills, who died shortly after the birth of her daughter. Winifred Atwood Jacobs was born c 1900; Mildred Adelaide Jacobs was born 1902, both at 'Spencycroft' in Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. Winifred married Stephen Edwin Yarnold (1903-1978), a Presbyterian & Uniting Church minister, on 26 July 1946. He had a notable career in the ministry and has an ADB biography.
