Margaret Ellen Holloway married William Hugh Hooke in 1892. Margaret is the daughter of James Charles Holloway and Mary Bennett. She was born in 1864 in Indigo,via Rutherglen at the gold lead. Her father James came out from Somerset England with a large family group to settle in the North East of Victoria and to try their fortune at gold mining. The Holloway’s and their descendants then went on to farm in the district including Rutherglen, Chiltern, Springhurst, Barnawartha and Browns Plains. Greatly relieved by his son’s safe return from war, John Richard Stanton (1872-1955) buys a parcel of productive farming land for his son John Charles “Jack” Stanton (1895-1989) to give him a “good start in life”. Jack’s wife Ethel Capper, devised the name “Gracerray” for the property to honour her sister Grace and the nearby Murray River. After the First World War, fourth generation Jack Stanton (1895-1989) with the help of his father started building a new winery (at the current site of the winery and cellar door) called ‘Gracerray’ named after his wife’s sister Grace and the Murray River. It is pronounced “Grah-sair-ray”. Jack built Gracerray around some existing cement open top vats from a winery that was demolished after phylloxera ravaged the region in the late 1890s. He used second hand materials from the defunct Great Southern gold mine and propped up the roof with huge tree trunks. Tarilta is a rural locality and former gold-mining town 12 km south of Castlemaine, 4 km north-west of Guildford and 3 km north-east of Vaughan. The last gold mining activity took place around the 1880s. It was originally Kangaroo Flat, being located where the Kangaroo Creek enters the Loddon River. It was surveyed and named in 1864. Gold was discovered at Tarilta in 1853. The Tarilta School was opened in 1860 in a Wesleyan chapel, and closed i n1925. In 1864 a township was surveyed and named Tarilta, the word being derived from an Aboriginal expression thought to mean kangaroo. In 1865 Bailliere’s Victorian gazetteer described Tarilta as being an alluvial and quartz gold-mining town with three quartz-crushing mills, three horse-puddling machines and two hotels. The town of Vire is on a rocky promontory above the Vire River, situated in the south-west of the Calvados department of Lower Normandy, about half way between Caen (north-east of Vire) and Mont-Saint-Michel (to the south-west). Since 2016 the town has been part of the commune called Vire-Normandie. The town suffered quite heavily during bombardments at the end of the Second World War, and much reconstruction and renovation took place in the decade that followed the end of the war. This tunic and cap were worn by Major General H H (Tack) Hammer CBE DSO & Bar, ED when Honorary Colonel 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1959-1960 Hammer had pre-WWII service with 8th Battalion and 17th Light Horse (Machine Gun) Regiment. He served with the 6th Division in North Africa and Greece before becoming Commanding Officer of 2nd/48th Battalion. On return from the Middle East, Hammer commanded the 15th Brigade throughout two years of fighting in New Guinea and Bougainville. After the war, Hammer became Commissioner for Repatriation in Victoria and continued his military career in the Citizens Military Forces, commanding the 2nd Armoured Brigade and later 3rd Division.
