Photograph - AUTOMAP 2 Production - Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986
This collection of 23 photos of map production on the AUTOMAP 2 computer-based system in Air Survey and Cartographic Squadrons, was most likely taken in 1986. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system, comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (Wild B8 Aviograph feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. Throughout its life, the system was progressively refined with productivity gains, achieved from award winning technical development in-house by talented and innovative Army Survey Regiment personnel. This is a set of 23 photograph of AUTOMAP 2 production at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986. The photographs were on 35mm colour slides and were scanned at 96 dpi. Photos .5P and .6P are also printed on photographic and scanned at 300 dpi. Photograph - Equipment used in Map Production at the Army Survey Regiment, 1991
These nine photographs of technical equipment were provided to the Directorate of Survey as input to the 1990-1991 Annual Report. The equipment in Photos .1P and .2P were used to evaluate/validate colour values on printed maps. The equipment in Photo .3P is a daylight film processor. The Optronix 5040 Laser Scanner/Plotter was shown in Photos .4P to .6P. The Print Room’s Map Handling Station in photo .7P provided ergonomic benefits to the Printer Technician and improved despatching productivity. The Optical Disk Archive and Retrieval System (ODARS) equipment in .8P was optical "platter" disk technology for the secure and long term archive storage of large amounts of digital map data. Map data was transferred from large reels of magnetic tape. As most map type (letters and names) generation was done in Automap 2, The ITEK Typesetter shown in photo .9P was close to obsolete in 1991. At this time it was used to generate map type for other RASvy units, contractors and sections still performing manual map production at Army Svy Regt. This is a set of photographs of Army Survey Regiment technical equipment taken in 1991. Photograph - 4 Fd Svy Sqn Closure Ceremony 25 Nov 1995, 4 Fd Svy Sqn, Keswick Barracks, Adelaide, 25.11.1995
Between 1915 and 1951, military topographical mapping in SA was conducted by Royal Australian Survey Corps (RASvy) units based outside the state. In February 1952, Army HQ Field Survey Section (Central Command Detachment) was established in Adelaide in a drill hall at Largs Bay. It was tasked with providing map coverage in the Woomera and Southern areas of the state. The section was subsequently reorganised as Central Command Field Survey Section moving firstly to Hampstead Barracks, Hampstead in 1953 and then into accommodation at Keswick Barracks in 1954. In 1957 the Section commenced mapping operations in the NT. The Unit was relocated to the old cavalry stables in 1961 and was redesignated Central Command Survey Unit and remained there till 1973. In 1970 the Unit was redesignated 4 Fd Svy Sqn and engaged in operations conducted in PNG from 1972 to 1974 inclusive. In 1973 the Squadron moved into a brand new two-storey specially designed and purpose built building adjacent to the old building. The old building then became the Squadron Q and Map store with an interconnecting lobby to the new building. Since 1975 the Unit was involved in the 1:50,000 Mapping Programme in WA, NT, QLD, SA and conducted many other operations within Australia and overseas. Post disbandment of the Corps the old Squadron building (cavalry stables) now houses the Army Museum of South Australia (AMOSA). The Royal Australian Survey Corps was amalgimated into the Royal Australian Engineer Corps in July 1996. In the lead up to this amalgamation, 4 Field Survey Squadron Keswick Barracks, Adelaide, South Australia was disbanded in 1995. A closing Ceremony was held on 25 November 1995 at 4 Fd Svy Sqn Keswick Barracks attended by about 208 former members of the Unit. A photo was taken of attendees at that event on the day and a list was prepared of attendees. All attendees were sent a copy of the photograph and the list of names as a momento of the Unit and the ceremony..1P A4 Print of an original photo of attendees at the 4 Fd Survey Sqn Closure Ceremony at Keswick Barracks 25 Nov 1995. .2P A4 Print of the names of the attendees at the 4 Fd Survey Sqn Closure Ceremony at Keswick Barracks 25 Nov 1995. Document - Army Topographic Support Establishment: Preferred In-House Option, 1 23 Nov 1993, .2 30 Nov 1994, .3 14 Jun 1995
.1 The Preferred In-House Option (PIHO) proposes to meet the full requirements of the Request for Tender (RFT) by disestablishing Army Survey Regiment and establishing a new organisation which they have named the Defence Topographic Support Establishment (DTSE). It is proposed to locate the DTSE at Bendigo in the GFE facilities offered by the Commonwealth. The DTSE will be staffed by 140 Defence civilians, principally sourced from ex-RASvy members transferring to the Public Service under the provisions of Section 81B of the Public Service Act. Any existing civilian members excess to DTSE requirements are proposed to be managed within the terms and conditions of the Australian Public Service Redeployment and Retirement (Redundancy) Award 1987. Military members who elect to remain in the Service will be subject to redeployment or retraining in accordance with Service requirements. .2 Proposed re-organisation of Product Construction Squadron (PCS). Due to the transfer of Image and capture Sections to Digital Acquisition Squadron wef Jan 1995 it has been necessary to review the structure of those elements remaining within PCS. The review highlighted that there was an imbalance between Mapping and Digital products Troops. This could only be resolved by collapsing these two Troops into one single production element. This would halve the senior administrative personnel needed thus allowing them to be employed in other higher priority technical areas. The proposed restructure of PCS is outlined in Annex A with redundant personnel listed in Annex B. The combined Troop is to be designated "Construction Troop" and comprises 1 Offr and 69 ORs. The role of this Tp would be to perform all digital production. It is further divided into small and Large Format Sections. This division is functionally based and reflects the hardware and software configurations now resident within the Sqn post system upgrade. .3 During the transition period leading to full implementation of the PHIO, the Army Svy Regt and DTSE (later ATSE) will at times operate concurrently whilst Army Svy Regt scales down production and progressively transfers all technical functions to DTSE. army Svy Regt and 4 Fd Svy Sqn will continue programmed production activities until declared operationally ineffective, however a contingency mapping capability will be maintained throughout the period of implementation. Implementation of the PHIO involves a number of related activities including staff recruitment, equipment acquisition and transfer of technical responsibility. This instruction details the coordination of these and related implementation activities. .1 Preferred In-House Option, Army Topographic Support Establishment. Photograph - Typesetting Equipment and Personnel, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1968 to 1979
This is a set of nine photographs of cartographic typesetting equipment and personnel in Cartographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1979. The rooms on the top floor of Fortuna Villa where the photos were taken were formally the nursery and boys bedrooms during the Lansell family’s occupation of the building. The Fotosetter type setting machine replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. Its operator entered the text using a type order provided by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen. The type was output on a film positive, which was contacted onto strip film. The text was cut out by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen and affixed onto type sheets using bees wax. Cartographic Squadron’s CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years, as shown in photos .3P and .4P. For more information on the Fotosetter, see page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The computer based Editwriter Model 7500 typesetting system was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. SGT Jim McDonald operated the Editwriter for a couple of years in the late 1970’s. He is seen in photos .7P and .8P. reading off a type order and entering text into the computer. See item 6181.23P, photo .1P for a reduced scale photo of SGT Jim McDonald undertaking this task. Also see item 6123.12P photos .1P and .2P featuring CPL Paul Richards, who was another technician that operated the Editwriter for several years in the 1980s. The Editwriter was also operated by SSGT Pat Lumsden, as featured in photo .9P taken in 1979. The Monotype Photolettering Machine seen in photos .5P and .6P is understood to be in service for a shorter period, as it was not as productive compared to the Fotosetter and Editwriter. Photograph - Cartographic Production – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1960 -1975
This is a set of 10 photographs of Cartographic Squadron technicians undertaking map production tasks in at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1975. Production was undertaken on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. The Fotosetter type setting machine shown in photos .1P and .2P. replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years. For more information on the Fotosetter, see page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph shown in photos .5P to .7P was introduced in 1962. It was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. The history of co-ordinatorgraphs is covered in more detail with additional historic photographs, in pages 50 to 51 and page 88 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The scribing process as shown in photos .8P to .9P was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter. The quality control edit (Proving) stage of map production shown in photo .10P was the first opportunity to independently and systematically inspect a proof of the map. This is a set of 10 photographs of cartographic Squadron technicians undertaking map production tasks at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1968 to c1975. photograph - Cartographic Squadron Production – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, c1980
This collection of 12 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The photos were most likely taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Ante Room, the Attic and small offices on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. The computer based Editwriter typesetting system was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter machine. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. CPL Richards performed this task for several years and in photo .1P and .2P is reading off a type order next to the computer monitor. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and contractor type setting requirements. Scribing was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter. The quality control edit (Proving) stage of map production was the first opportunity to inspect a proof of the map independently and systematically. Proving tasks were carried out by technicians conversant of the map product specification and task requirement, however, was not involved in its production. Corrections were identified, marked up and sent to back to the correcting section or contractors. Terrain Embossing was a manual map production technique to produce hill shading on medium to small scale graphics and air charts. SPR John Martin is seen in photos .8P to.10P using a fine embossing metal stylus to push down on the drainage impression on a thin malleable opaque plastic material (AK Poligraphy). Ridge lines were then pushed down using the contour impression as a guide, on the opposing side of the AK Poligraphy to create a 3D plastic model terrain effect. The map impression was sprayed with white paint and photographed to create a contone tone hill shade. SPR Gina (Coore) Neilson is seen in photo .11P washing a contone positive of a land mass in a solution. The contone components were registered to the map sheet, as shown in photo .12P and masked using an air brush and a halftone negative was then created. The terrain embossing method of producing hill shading was more efficient to produce than previous specialised artistic methods such pencil/eraser and air brush. Photograph - 4th Field Survey Squadron – CPL John Ratcliffe World Record, Keswick Barracks, Adelaide SA, 1986
This is a set of 12 photographs of 4th Field Survey Squadron’s CPL John Ratcliffe setting a world record for an exercise routine comprising push-ups, sit-ups and double back-arches at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide in November 1986. A newspaper article of unknown origin titled “John sets world’s best time in routine” was published reporting the achievement. The article reported: “Corporal John Ratcliffe has smashed his personal best time, his greatest expectations and the 16-year-old Australian record for a push-up, sit-up and double back-arch routine. Corporal Ratcliffe, 37, set a world record by doing 1232 push-ups (clapping his chest with his hands between each one), 1936 back-arches and 440 sit-ups in one hour, 16 minutes and 29 seconds yesterday. Officials representing the Guinness Book of Records were present and passed his effort. The record was achieved by repeating a set of 14 push-ups, 22 double back-arches and 5 sit-ups, 88 times. The Australian record for the same routine was set in 1970 in the time of 1 hour 41 minutes. CPL Ratcliffe beat his personal best time by 13 minutes. “I could not do it without them” CPL Ratcliffe said of the crowd. Nearing the end of the routine when he was tiring, the crowd of more than 100 clapped and chanted encouragement. CPL Ratcliffe, who works in the Army’s surveying department, said the most important aspect of the exercise was raising money for Legacy, not getting his name in the record books.” This achievement was also reported in the Army Newspaper dated 11th Dec 1986. There are eight more photos that have not been published in the set of negatives. This is a set of 12 photographs of 4th Field Survey Squadron’s CPL John Ratcliffe setting a exercise routine world record at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide in November 1986. Photograph - 4th Field Survey Squadron - Land Rover Perentie Light Vehicles, Keswick Barracks, Adelaide SA, 1987
This is a set of 35 photographs featuring 4th Field Survey Squadron’s newly introduced Survey variant of the Land Rover Perentie light vehicle, at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide SA in 1987. The Land Rover Perentie is a nickname for the Land Rover 110 produced by JRA Limited for the Australian Army, and part manufactured and assembled in Moorebank, New South Wales, during the 1980s and 1990s The name Perentie originates from Land Rover's successful tender to Project Perentie, which was the official Australian Army trial to select new 1 and 2-tonne light vehicles to replace the ageing fleet of Series 2A and 3 Land Rovers. The major differences between the Land Rover Perentie and British Land Rovers were the relocation of the spare wheel to a position under the rear of the load area, a galvanised chassis and the Isuzu engine. The Land Rover Perenties were produced in 4x4 and 6x6 variants and powered by an Isuzu 3.9-litre four-cylinder 4BD1 diesel engine. The Truck, Panel, Lightweight, Survey, FFR, Winch, MC2 model was one of eight 4x4 variants built for the Australian Army. There were 35 vehicles built to satisfy the operational requirements of RA Svy’s units. Source – Wikipedia.
