It is thought that this photograph was taken in Newcastle during a visit Melbourne Ithacans in the 1940s. Many Melbourne Ithacans had relatives who had settled in Newcastle. There was an established community of Ithacans in Newcastle dating back to the early 1900s. The two storey building is the Royal Hotel which is sited on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets in Sunbury's main shopping strip.The photograph was taken sometime in 1939 after it was totally rebuilt. A fire had damaged the old single storey structure, which was built on the same site c1860 shortly after Sunbury had a rail service. The building still operates today on the same site.The Royal Hotel is one of four hotels that were built in Evans Street Sunbury between Brook and Station Streets ion the 1860s shortly after the rail service arrived in the town. They were They were the Railway Hotel (Olive Tree), White Horse Hotel, Royal Hotel and the Rupertswood Hotel, opposite the Royal Hotel. As the closest port to the mainland and neighbouring island Lefkada, Frikes was historically a trading port, supplying produce and merchandise to northern Ithaca. Today it is more a quiet fishing village which comes alive during the summer months with cafes and taverns. In summer tourist yachts moor at Frikes and a ferry service operates to Lefkada. The Classic Restaurant, located in Swanson Street next to Young and Jacksons Hotel, was one of the many businesses owned by Ithacans in Melbourne's CBD. Nakis Raftopoulos ran the business during the 70 & 80s up until the property was sold and became a fast food chain outlet. The building has since been demolished as part of Melbourne's Metro Tunnel project. Many Ithacans who settled in Melbourne in the early years of the twentieth century opened restaurants In the CBD. From the 1950s onwards the number of these Ithacan owned businesses gradually declined and by the 1970s very few remained. The Classic Restaurant was one of the last remaining establishments in the CBD owned and operated by an Ithacan. A black and white photograph of the Classic Restaurant. The Merbein shops were originally owned by Spiros Raftopoulos (Levendi) who migrated from Kolieri, Ithaca, Greece. The HK range introduced in January 1968 was touted as the "The New Generation" Holden. The all new body had a longer and wider wheelbase, with much more room inside, and for the first time V8 power was on offer. The other big news for HK was the huge range of options on offer.HK Holden Kingswood sedan was the first vehicle to be given the "Kingswood" name. White four door sedan . In the early days people travelled to the picnic grounds in furniture vans. A number of houses were built within the Sunbury Asylum grounds to house administrators and staff, and their families, who worked at the asylum. On the corner of Cairstairs Ave opposite Robin Hood Inn. The cafe Duckin, Mr and Mrs Kostantinidis bought it and on the side of that cafe down a verandah was the Billiard Room. It was very popular and a lot of the locals would play there. Rosemary was about 5 - 7 years old and had to stand on a fish box to play. It was very popular and next door was the Bamboo Coffee Shop run by Mr and Mrs Varney The'Duckin' became Peels bait shop Dot and Con Coucoulas took over the Bamboo and turned it into a motel not sure on the year and then bought the Duckin and demolished it. It was after Tween Lakes was built in 1959, as that was the first motel in townThe first 20 units and restaurant were built in 1959 with firsts guests on Dec. 22nd.1959.
