Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Administrative record - Account cards, 1920s and 30s
These cards have been used as an accounting system by the Warrnambool firm of J. Mainland and Co. This firm of watchmakers, opticians and manufacturing jewellers was established in Liebig Street in the late 1890s and continued on into the 20th century at 166 Timor Street. The cards date from the 1920s and 30s. It is noted that in 1932 one customer purchased a Clarice Cliff ash tray for six shillings and sixpenceThese cards are of considerable interest firstly they give us some details of the many customers of the Warrnambool jewellery firm of J. Mainland and Co and secondly because they provide us with much information on a great number of residents of Warrnambool and district in the 1920s and 30s (addresses etc)This is a collection of paper invoices, some original, some copied, with some in alphabetical order and some in number order. The invoices are separated by pieces of cardboard with either numbers or letters on the front. The collection is only portion of a larger set of cards. English currency before decimalisation in the 1970's consisted of pounds, shillings and pence with twelve pennies to the shilling and twenty shillings to the pound.Coins ranged from farthings which were one quarter of a penny through to pennies, threepence, sixpence, shillings ,half crowns and crowns. Most coins had a variety of common names such as a " bob" for a shilling a "quid for a pound and a tanner for a sixpence. This coin is the equivalent of five shillings and is known as a crown. The text around the obverse, "Victoria Dei Gratia 1844". On the reverse the text of Regina Fid Def"Britanniarum translates as Queen of Britain and defender of the faith.The text around the edge, DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI VIII translates as " an ornament and a safeguard. Coins were thus stamped in an effort to reduce the incidence of penny pinching whereby small amounts of precious metal were shaved from the edge of coins and still passed as full value coins.This coin was minted in the eighth year of the reign of one of England's longest ruling monarchs.It is of historical and social significance with the study of coins having considerable interest for many people. Large silver coin with image of Queen Victoria on the obverse or heads side of the coin and a coat of arms with crown at the top surrounded by a wreath of leaves is on the reverse. Text is around the edge of both sides with text also stamped into the edge of the coin as well. Obverse " Victoria Dei Gratia 1844." Bacchus Marsh & District Historical SocietyDocument, Envelope used for letter to Mr James Henderson, Learmouth Mill, Coldstream, Northumberland, England. 1861
This envelope was used to post a letter or other similar document from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria around November 1861 to a Mr James Henderson in Coldstream, Northumberland, England. The contents inside the envelope have been lost and the sender of the envelope is not known. Postal services in Bacchus Marsh can be traced back to at least 1847 when Henry James of Bacchus Marsh was appointed postmaster for Bacchus Marsh replacing the service previously conducted from Ballan. Henry James conducted this postal service from his residence. This service was still designated as the Ballan Post Office until September 1850 when its name was formally changed to the Bacchus Marsh Post Office. The envelope of 1861 addressed to Mr Henderson in England is therefore a fairly early documentary artifact from users of the Bacchus Marsh postal service. An envelope used for a letter in 1861. An address in Norththumberland, England is written on the front of the envelope. It also shows a postage stamp depicting Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The postage stamp is a sixpence stamp produced in the colony of Victoria in the 1850s and 1860s. This bottle was used in the pharmacy business of H.O.Wilkinson. He had a chemist’s shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool (number 119 Liebig Street today) early in the 20th century. The dates found for this business are from 1906 to 1914. Wilkinson also had pharmacies in Melbourne and Maryborough. His cough mixture, Wilkinson’s Pectorine, selling at two shillings and sixpence a bottle, was advertised as ‘the finest preparation for the cure of stubborn coughs and colds’. This bottle is of considerable interest as it is one of the few items in our collection associated with an early 20th century Warrnambool chemist, H.O.Wilkinson. This is a clear glass bottle with a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular top. The stopper is made of cork. Established by local designer Ralph Samuel, Hartnell of Melbourne was one of the leading high-end Flinders Lane fashion houses of the 1950s and 1960s. This dress still has its original store tag attached, which tells us that it cost 39 pounds, 19 shillings and sixpence - a large amount of money to spend on a dress in 1952. Adjusted for inflation, this price tag equates to approximately $1,480 in today's money.Mauve tucked and folded cocktail dress with twin shoulder straps, ruched bodice and gathered skirt. The Flying Dogtor was called to the Snowy Mountains Scheme by the Government to help solve the mystery of a monster or sea serpent, that was wandering the lakes and tunnels. Several times, the Dogtor caught a glimpse of a monster but every time, it got away before he could see it properly or speak to it. Then he came to a weird-looking lookout on the edge of the lake, and paid his sixpence to climb to the platform for a look through a telescope. In 1866, in an effort to maintain the main roads of the region it was decided to establish toll roads on the Belfast, Woodford Purnim and Allansford roads. Gates were erected and the leases were disposed of by auction. In 1867 the Woodford tollhouse was destroyed by fire suspected to be deliberate. The tolls were removed three years later after much opposition. These tickets are a physical link to one of the earliest attempts to introduce a toll road in the district. Seven toll road tickets five mounted on card. Light paper. Six are for the Main Belfast Road and one for the Woodford road. There are various prices ranging from sixpence to three shillings. Four are cream in colour, one each of blue, yellow and green. In 1896 George Le Couteur succeeded Frank Uren in the Liebig Street chemist shop that had been established by James Astley Bromfield in 1876. Le Couteur had been an apprentice with Michael Ryan in Timor Street in the early 1870s. Le Couteur had his own medicines including his Pectoral Cough Mixture ( selling in bottles for 2 shillings and sixpence) which he claimed acted as a preventative for that "dread disease consumption ". In 1907 Le Couteur sold the business and moved to Melbourne. War Savings Cards were a popularist and accessible means of encouraging the ordinary citizens and children to contribute to the war effort by buying stamps to adhere to cards such as this. The stamps were valued at 6d and were of a blue and white image of a WW2 Spitfire plane. In addition there were war savings certificates, a type of promissory note, which were sold to hundreds of thousands of Australians during World War I and World War II.A beige card (unfolded and unused) printed in navy blue. The front is illustrated with the Australian coat-of-arms, space for the owner's personal details, information about the collection of war saving stamps, and the words "Sixpence a day keeps invaders away". On the back is "Don't be an onlooker - be in the fight". There are 32 spaces in which to adhere a war savings stamp and 3 illustrations - a plane in battle, search lights and a soldier in profile wearing a tin hat. Orbost & District Historical Societycertificate, July 3, 1858
This is a certificate of indenture, a legal agreement, between George Beattie of Forest Creek, near Castlemaine in the colony of Victoria, and Peter Christian Smith of the same place. Both were miners. Beattie was the vendor and Smith paid twenty-five pounds for a land parcel. The contract was witnessed by John Hedderwick, a law clerk in Castlemaine. There is a record in the Mount Alexander Mail, dated Wed. 22 April 1857, of George Beattie purchasing land for three pounds, sixteen and sixpence in Castlemaine and that it was withdrawn. Records also show that a Peter and Thomas Smith farmed in Sandon near Castlemaine.This item is a useful research tool as it a hand-written record of part of the history of the gold fields region of Victoria.A white paper certificate of conveyance with black print and hand-written details from George Beattie to Peter Smith. The ANZAC Day medallion was issued for sale in 1916. The medallion was struck by the Education Department of Victoria for school children in 1916, to commemorate the first anniversary of the ANZAC Forces landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. An article in the ARGUS newspaper, written at the time, stated that the medallions were issued for sale for the price of sixpence. Although 175,000 medallions were made, this proved insufficient for demand. The medallion was sold to Victorian school children at commemorations of the landing of the of the Australian and New Zealand troops arriving on the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915. The medallion was also distributed to the public on ANZAC Button Day for one shilling. Circular medal with an eyelet at the top for attaching loop holding ribbon (loop and ribbon missing). Edward ( Ted) Salamy (1903-1977) succeeded his father in business in Warrnambool as a jeweller and was at 179 Liebig Street when he retired in the 1960s. On 1st December in 1924 he obtained an amateur radio licence ( Call sign A3AJ). This was the 35th licence issued in the State of Victoria and the first in Warrnambool. The original licence cost two shillings and sixpence. Amateur radio, still a popular hobby today, was particularly important in the 1920s when few people had radios of any sort and there were no provincial radio stations. People were able to access amateur radio sets to listen to such broadcast as overseas cricket matches. This amateur radio set is of considerable historical importance as it belonged to Ted Salamy, credited with being the first to operate an amateur radio station in Warrnambool.This is a rectangular box containing five valves, a radio frequency mechanism and three coils with fine copper winding. The mechanisms are connected by wires and metal screws. The box has a raised black -composite material front which has a voltage meter, three switches or knobs and a tuning dial. Contract, 2 page handwritten, dated 9 March 1895, Written on front Christmas Reef GML Contract for driving 50 feet east @ 152 feet. On inside specification for driving cross-cut for the Christmas Reef Gold Mining Company No Liability ( least no 6486 Sandhurst ) at a depth of 150 feet A numbered list of expectation is given, for example Number 3: ' All Mullock & Co., obtained from the cross-cut shall be brought to the surface and the shaft and cross-cut left perfectly clear on the completion of the contract. Should any quartz be struck it must be brought up and stacked separately or disposed of as the company shall direct On bottom of contract I the undersigned hereby agree to perform the within mentioned work according to ?. Within written specification and to be bound by the terms and conditions therein mentioned for the sum of nine shilling and sixpence per completed foot of driving. Unlike regular postage stamps, Cinderella stamps were privately produced and had could not be used for postage. They were produced for a number of reasons:- 1. as souvenirs of a specific event, 2. as promotional tools either for a business our tourism, 3. to raise funds for a particular project. Ref. Stanley Gibbons philately Card by the City of Plymouth for the 1953 Coronation. The card has the logo of E.R. II on the front. Inside a strip of 10 Cinderella stamps showing Plymouth old and new. The designs are: Sir Franci Drake and the Golden Hind, H.M.S. Vanguard, Winstanley's Lighthouse, Smeaton Tower, Mayflower, Ile de France, Elizabethan House 32 New Street, Old Town Street, Buckland Abbey and Royal Parade. The Coronation seals have been issued by the Port of Plymouth junior Chamber of Commerce and the proceeds are in aid of the following charities: the Lord Mayor's Christmas fund, the Patient's Voluntary Welfare fund and the Plymouth Council of Social Service.
