Clothing - SAGE COLOURED SILK LONG SLEEVED DRESS, 1880-1890's
Sage coloured silk long sleeved dress. One piece full length dress. Full length side panels from shoulder to hem. Front of bodice extends below waist line to form two points on either side of front opening. Front opening is fastened with twelve fabric buttons (1-5cm) and button holes. Small standup collar(3cm) fastened at throat with hook and eye. Bodice shaped with two darts on either side of front opening. Small ruched pocket on LHS of bodice at waist level. Long narrow fitted sleeves shaped at the elbow. Decorative cuffs at wrists of ruched frilling (8cm) with triangularturned flap on top edge at back of cuff. Back of dress has four panels. The two centre panels extend below waist to to two points. The centre skirt panel is attached under the centre two panels and is gathered by five deep pleats to form a bustle effect extending to a long train. Front centre panel has horizontal gathering with ruched frills in centre, and at sides. Side panels overlap front centre panel. Hemline has pleated frill above the hem which is finished with cord. Clothing - BODICE (WEDDING DRESS), 1896
Bodice (Wedding dress), hand and machine stitched. Silk lined with polished cotton. Slim ruched sleeves - ruched at inner and elbow side of sleeve (hand sewn). Elbow edge of ruching forms two ''frilled pleats'' down the sleeve to the wrist. Wrist edge lily pointed and finished with a 9 cm underfill of cotton lace. Top of sleeves have a leg-o-mutton balloon effect panel sewn at the shoulder and the upper arm. This balloon effect hangs down over the sleeves almost to the elbow. Top of sleeve has an embroidered lace frill hanging over armhole. Two silk bows are placed at the shoulders. Stand-up collar,5 cm deep is finished on each side with a pearl and glass beaded bow motif- 6cm in diameter. Hook and eye fasteners down front-metal loops covered with button hole stitch. Bodice boned with thirteen (13) ''bones''. Each pocket finished with a fan pattern stitching. Linen panel, with a diamond shaped weave stitched at each underarm. Front bodice is pleated from shoulders to centre front. Right front laps across left to fasten with a hook on the left shoulder. This panel is heavily beaded with glass beads and sequins. Domestic Object - VELVET AND SILK TEA COSY, 1920's -30's
Velvet and silk tea cosy. Green velvet _(one side severely faded). Ruched silk border between the two sides. Silk deep gold merging to a smokey blue grey on the lighter green side. Purple fabric artificial pansies, and attached to the dark green side - three flowers, three buds. Olive gold silk ribbon bow stitched to hold the flowers in position. Reverse side has a posy of deep cream/gold pansies, and purple silk ribbon bow. Reverse side(inside) of fabrics is green cotton backing the velvet. A looped bow of narrow purple and gold ribbon on top on each side, joined by the purple and gold ribbon - five cms wide. At time of donation in 1966, an embroidered folding toilet holer and handpainted crepe paper table centre came from the Estate of Doris Kelly. (Information located in correspondence, 1966. Greeting Card: Rectangle in shaped with a mauve velvet border. In the centre on a cream silk background is an ornate design with Scotch thistle and clasped male and female hands in a plastic like material. A heart painted in blue of Forget Me Not flowers and green leaves with 'DINNA FORGET' in silver. Has gold metal ribbon on the front. A ribbon is attached at the top for hanging. Clothing - FAY BRYANT COLLECTION: NYLON BRAID/TRIMMING, 1960 - 1979
Lemon coloured bri-nylon braid Folded in a concertina-like manner, the top embroidered layer is 3cm wide and has a double underlayer of 5cm width. Fabric is overlocked along the top edge to hold these layers in place. Embroidered in a leaf-like design, along a curved wavy thread in a silk like thread. Sheer embroidered nylon. Silk thread embroidery in a floral pattern. Scalloped edge finishes the lace panel. The original train on the wedding dress was a feature of the wedding gown, falling in tiers as a "waterfall" effect. One tier was later used by Merle to make a christening dress for her first child, Bronwyn. Clothing - HELEN MUSK COLLECTION: PINK SILK BODICE
Long sleeved pink silk bodice lined with pink and mauve cotton fabric. Front of bodice made of pieces with a centre seam. Centre panel insert of cream coloured embroidered net narrowing from 28 cms across high neckline to 18 cms at waist. Five black velvet bows are attached vertically at centre front from below the throat, 6 cms apart. Velvet bows hand stitched to centre front. Front panel has rounded shape dipping below the waist. On either side of front insert are two wide vertical tucks Stand up collar of embroidered net (6 cms) has two pieces of wire inserted at LHS of back opening and in front of LH shoulder. Matching wire pieces on RHS are missing. Wire pieces are hand stitched in place. The bodice has a back opening fastened with six buttons and button holes plus a hook and eye at the top below the collar. One button is missing. Buttons are white with wheel spoke pattern. Strip of hemmed silk fabric is tied to the top buttonhole. Cotton lining consists of four pieces across the back and two pieces across the front with centre seam and two darts on either side. Full gathered set in sleeves from the shoulder are gathered into a tightly fitted 20 cm lower sleeve just below the elbow. The upper sleeve has a fitted lining of mauve cotton fabric shaped to the elbow and then forming the fitted sleeve along the lower arm. The fitted lower sleeves are covered with cream coloured embroidered net and have a 10 cm opening on outer edge fastened with three buttons and button holes. Clothing - HELEN MUSK COLLECTION: CREAM SILK BODICE AND SKIRT
Ivory coloured silk bodice. Part of wedding ensemble with matching skirt with train. (11400.513B). The silk fabric has an all over pattern of scattered leaves. The bodice has long sleeves and is fully lined with cotton fabric with a front opening. The cotton lining at the front forms a separate bodice with a front opening fastened with fifteen hooks and eyes from throat to waist. The lining is edged at centre front on both sides with a border of the silk fabric. The border narrows from 7 cm at the throat to 3 cm at the waist. In the lining of the bodice are two casings on either side of the front opening containing boned segments. Across the lining of the back are seven casings containing boned segments. The front LHS of the bodice has an outer layer of silk fabric with a squared neckline. The RHS of the bodice overlaps the centre opening of the bordered lining to attach across the left shoulder. From the left shoulder the front tapers diagonally to the waistline 4cm to the left of centre. This cross over section is fastened with ten hooks and eyes – seven of the eyes are attached to the bodice lining and three are on the LHS outer silk fabric layer. This section crosses full width to the edge of the LH sleeve, across the top of the shoulder to the neckline. The LHS outer section crosses back over the edge of the centre section. There is a third layer on the RHS with a squared neckline to form a symmetrical appearance. The two side sections are edged with ruffles of fine silk ribbon. The centre section of the crossover part has vertical pintucks extending from the throat for 9 cm. The fullness created by the pintucks is gathered to centre front where the waist dips to a shallow V shape. The back of the bodice has vertical pintucks extending 12 cm from across the shoulders, narrowing to a single vertical strip of pintucks (4 cm) ending at centre waist. The waist is edged with a border of silk ribbon with a horizontal tuck. Inside the back of the bodice above the waist cotton tape ties are attached. These ties extend to the front of the bodice and the ends are fastened with a metal buckle. On this cotton tape at centre back there are to metal hooks for attaching the skirt. Attached to the neckline of the front section of the bodice is a 7 cm stand up collar. The collar extends from the RH shoulder in front of the neck and across the LH shoulder and continues unattached around the back of the neck to attach to the edge of the collar at the RH shoulder. The edges of the collar are fastened with three hooks and eyes. The collar has three full width horizontal pleats and the top edge is trimmed with a frill of fine gathered silk ribbon. On the waistline at centre front and centre back are decorative buttons (3.5 cm) of pearl coloured beads. The buttons have a centre pearl bead bordered by small glass beads surrounded by 9 smaller pearl beads and nine small pearl beads. Each button is edged with a row of tiny class beads with 18 points. The long sleeves are fully lined and made of two sections. The underneath section of the sleeve is ungathered and shaped at the elbow. The upper section of each sleeve is gathered at the shoulders and attached to the underneath section with a series of small pleats down to the elbow creating fullness. There is a small cap sleeve at each shoulder over the top of the gathered sleeve. The cap sleeves are edged with a frill of gathered silk ribbon with a decorative row of gathered silk ribbon parallel to the edge. At each wrist is a gathered frill of silk fabric edged with silk ribbon. Each sleeve has an 8 cm split at the wrist on the back seam. Full length ivory coloured silk skirt. The silk fabric has an all over pattern of scattered leaves. The skirt is fully lined with cotton fabric. The skirt is made of 5 pieces. The centre front panel has two darts at the waistline. The two side panels are cut on the bias and wrap around to form a centre back seam gathered into the waistband and finishing 44 cm below the waist line. Two triangular pieces of fabric are inserted at the back below the centre seam to complete the full circle of the skirt. There is 30 cm back opening. The waistband is made of cotton tape (3cm) fastened with two hooks and eyes with a 2 cm crossover. There is another hook and eye fastener halfway along the opening split. There is one upward facing hook on either side of the centre back opening to attach the matching bodice. The LHS of the back opening has a cotton fabric pocket inserted along the seam. VFL premiership medal in display box, 1901 (medal)
Medal was awarded to Bill Griffith as a member of the victorious Essendon premiership team in 1901; put into presentation case by Jack Griffith, Bill's sonCircular gold 1901 VFL premiership medal. Engraved "VFL" logo has been cut out in centre of circle leaving a thin border; "Essendon F. C." engraved on top part of border, "Premiers 1901" engraved on bottom part of border. Reverse has"Griffiths" [sic] engraved on top part of border. Medal has small loop at top which has a small metal ring through it; royal blue silk ribbon (not original) has been passed through ring. Medal is in a black leather case with clear plastic top, lined with grey suede, with a metal lock at front. Gold metal panel has been attached to bottom edge of case top with "Donated by Jack Griffith" in black letters. Two more gold metal plaques have been attached to glass from the inside with grey plastic tape; top plaque has "1901 premiership medallion" in black text, and bottom plaque has " "Griffith, William (Ess.) - 1899-1913" with details of his career in black text. Black and white photocopied photo of Griffith has been attached to bottom of case next to the medal. Key to the lock is also in the case.Engraved "VFL" logo has been cut out in centre of circle leaving a thin border; "Essendon F. Premiership cap presented to Hercules "Hec" Vollugi after Essendon won the 1901 premiership. Premiership caps were presented by both the VFA and the VFL until about 1924. The caps were traditionally made of navy silk. This one has had Essendon's colours embroidered on the peak in the shape of a shield. Vollugi was a fine wingman who played 70 games for Essendon from 1901 to 1906.Navy blue grosgrain silk cap with small peak; cap is divided into six segments separated by cream silk braid with navy button on top; embroidered badge in metallic and silk gold thread at front of cap; badge consists of monogram of interwined V F L with "Premiers" in a scroll beneath and "1901" beneath that; shield embroidered in red and black longstitch on peak. Clothing - AILEEN AND JOHN ELLISON COLLECTION: LONG TULLE THREE TIER WEDDING VEIL, 1960's
Clothing. Light cream in colour. Fine possibly silk tulle, tightly gathered at the front. Measuring 255 cms long, the veil is edged with a very fine silk binding. A shorter 78 cm long layer also tightly gathered, sits over the top. A third layer also 78 cm long is separated from the lower tiers. This Would possibly be the layer that came forward over the bride's face. It may later have been removed. Clothing. Infant's cream silk dress. High round neckline edged with one cm lace, and casing. Yoke front and back extending to kimono style long sleeves. Front yoke has four vertical strips of lace and centre embroidered panel with pale pink flowers and pale green leaves. Two strips of inserted lace extend along the top of each sleeve from neckline to wrist. Sleeves edged with three cm lace at hem. Centre back opening (22 cm) fastened at neckline with.6 cm pink silk ribbon and two one cm buttons and button holes in centre and lower edge of yoke.
