M/s Diane McLeod, Shepparton Art Gallery insisted they be preserved as the RSL was to be demolished and Loel Thompson was unable to preserve the building as a museum. Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures whilst he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall. After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. The von Gruenewaldt murals presently hang in the David Jones Nursing home and other public buildings in Murchison.Photograph of caricature painted on mess hut wall. Discovered in 2003 when owner, Ken Gray, of Tatura, noticed the covering paper peeling away on the wall of a galvanised iron shed on his property. He believed the shed was bought at the internment camp 4 auction conducted by the Commonwealth Government in the early 1950's and transported to the property which he now owns.Cartoon like painting depicting men (army garrison soldiers) playing billiards. “The artwork speaks to the historical architecture of this area, while exploring the idea of changing understanding of space. Space is bent, bulged and repeated, in this painting, like a mirror maze. In this way, it will inspire playfulness, curiosity and thought, by transforming the way we observe, move through and engage with public space”Artist George Goodnow has installed their artwork on the Annex Wall in Alfred Deakin Place from 30th November 2021 - 1 November 2022. George is a multidisciplinary artist and curator currently living in Naarm (Melbourne). Their work for the Annexe Wall will feature a fictional architectural arrangement of the Police Lane site. George utilises painting (designed through hand-drawn and digital processes) to adjust existing architecture, illuminating how spaces reflect, orientate and hold bodies. Lieutenant Albrecht was interned in Dhurringile during WW2, the images are of articles found in his books by his son Otto Albrecht, who forwarded copies by email. Emailed photo of painting of Dhurringile Mansion, possibly painted by Lieutenant Krampe, pow who is thought to have painted the mural on the internal wall of the Mansion, and which depicted a stallion rearing over a lion. Hans - Wolter von Gruenewaldt, German P.O.W (Ex South African - Mining engineer) painted these scenes and figures as murals on the walls of the Camp 13 Recreational hall. After WW2 the hall was purchased by the Murchison R.S.L as its headquarters in 1955. These paintings can now be seen at the David Jones Nursing Home in Murchison.Small photo album, with a collection of painted scenes and figures as murals on the walls of camp 13 Recreational hall. The album also includes photos of visitors to the Internment camps, Japanese Chan, Oki and Takamura families at the Tatura Historical Society, and visitors to the German War Cemetery during 1992/93. -
Robin Boyd FoundationPainting, Asher Bilu, Solstar, 1968
Robin Boyd most likely saw Solstar at Asher Bilu's exhibition at South Yarra Gallery in September 1968. In November 1968, Robin Boyd arranged for the loan of this painting from South Yarra Gallery to Australian Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, where Boyd was appointed Exhibit Architect. It hung in the bedroom over a bed, containing a life-size cut-out figure by Bruce Petty, in the Model House Interior exhibit on modern living in the Space Tube. On its return from Expo, the painting was in transit at the Boyd's home in Walsh Street and they liked it so much that they decided to buy it. Solstar originally hung on the wall at the end of the galley kitchen. The artwork at the Boyd's home in Walsh St has been moved several times over the years. Solstar now hangs above the dining table, but at the time of Solstar's acquisition, the Boyds hung the painting "Winter Triumphant" (1920) by Penleigh Boyd, Robin Boyd’s father, above the dining table. In early 2021, Asher and Luba Bilu visited Walsh St to view Solstar again. Asher was extremely happy with how the painting looked and its condition 53 years after painting it. He requested it be hung a little higher and he returned in April to make some minor restorations to remove scratches. Silver mixed media with large black circular area in the central lower half. On reverse has the title: Solstar/A. Bilu/Arrow showing which way up. A wallpaper sample donated to the collection by Frances Alexandra (Frankie) Derham (1894–1987). Derham was an Australian artist and educator. A lecturer in art at the Melbourne Kindergarten Training College (1928-64) , she later taught at the Associated Teacher Training Institution (1949-61). Her commitment to `child art’ developed after 1935 when she accepted an invitation from Margaret Lyttle to teach at Preshil school. Frances Derham's collection of nearly ten thousand children’s drawings and paintings was acquired by the Australian National Gallery in 1976. Her interest in art for and by children is reflected in her donation to the Villa Alba Museum of an important and rare collection of early wallpapers designed for children's rooms.
