The photograph shows Z-class trams 3 and 5 being fitted out or constructed at Preston Workshops, 1975. Z3 has been fitted with a trolley pole and other equipment, while Z5 is on stands. There are a number of people looking at Z5, which indicates a possible workshop tour. The tours database does not give a formal enthusiast tour of Preston in 1975. Night time flash-lit photograph taken from under a nearby shop verandah shows W2 class tram 244 just arrived at a wet Elgar Road terminus. One passenger hurries away from the tram in the rain while others in the front saloon stand to exit. The destination sign reads "Camberwell Depot, 70", the trolley poles are you to be reset and the last of three off-side weather blinds is being lowered. An advertisement for local radio station 3AW and presenter Derryn Hinch is fixed to the side of the tram. By 2025, 100 new trams will be designed and built due to a $1.5 billion government injection to fund 100 ‘‘next-generation trams’’, replacing A and Z-Class trams. Two manufacturers have been shortlisted to design and build the trams: French rail manufacturer Alstom and a joint venture comprising Spanish rail maker CAF and UGL. At 25 metres long – about eight metres shorter than the newest E-Class trams – the trams will carry 150 passengers, fewer than the E-Class, which carry 210 people. Despite the smaller size, seating will remain proportionally comparable with the E-Class, with 48 people or a third of passengers getting a seat on the new fleet. Photographs show the front, side and rear views of male and female models wearing the new brown coloured tram crew uniforms. They include male jacket with gold buttons, trousers, yellow shirt and brown tie. Female brown jacket with gold buttons, skirt and roll neck scivy. These uniforms were introduced for tram crews on the new Z class trams that entered service from 1975. These trams were painted in a distinctive orange and cream livery with brown coloured internal fittings. The photographs were taken against a plain cream wall with brown skirting board and carpet, possibly in part of the uniform factory at Hawthorn Tram Depot.
