Used at School of mines and industries Ballarat As H.V. McKay's Sunshine Harvester business expanded there was a requirement for a school to train the company's apprentices. In 1911, H.V. McKay wrote to the Victoria Cabinet offering 2,000 pounds and 4 1/2 acres of land in Derby Rd for a technical school, On the 7th July 1913, the new Sunshine Technical School opened with a wooded administration building with six class rooms and a large galvanised iron workshop for the trade apprentices. Mr George Baxter was appointed principal with assistant teachers, A.J. Dunlop (Maths & English), W.W. Anderson (Art) & H.B. Ernest (Maths & Science). Seventy students were enrolled in the first year of which 44 were apprentices from the Harvester Works. During the First World War Years (1914 - 1918) there was a difficulties with staffing and enrollments. The school was also used to provide vocational training for wounded returned soldiers. It was issued to Roy Eliason (449852), a Shepparton local who enlisted in 1944 and served as a Leading Aircraftman with the 2nd Operational Training Unit Mildura. Contents include: Appendix I: Law, Discipline, Administration and Organisation, Hygiene and Sanitation, Notes on Meteorology, Definitions, The principles of flight, Airframes, Engine; Appendix II: Mathematics problems for revision.This notebook has significant research potential, as it bears the service number of the owner: Roy Eliason. Roy Eliason's service history is well documented in the National Archives of Australia and this book provides an insight into a period of his service. Notebooks such as this were presumably issued to new recruits in the early stages of their service. Though this copy is in fair condition with several signs of wear, these signs may in fact increase the significance of the item, demonstrating the frequent use of this item in the hands of a new recruit to the Royal Australian Air Force. The school exercise book belonged to Florence Tyler who was born in 1884 and died in 1914 at 30 years of age. Two letters within the exercise book are dated 1898 so it is presumed this is the year Florence compiled the book. The school was Warrnambool State School No. 1743 which opened in 1876 after the earlier Warrnambool Common School closed. This exercise book is of interest as an example of school subjects and standards covered at a 6th grade level in the late 19th century. A school exercise book of 50 pages. The hard cover of the book has a blue pattern and a label to identify the school and student. The pages are ruled with handwriting in black ink and ruled dividing lines in red ink. Each page covers a different subject - English (grammar, parsing, writing, spelling, syntax, poetry), Arithmetic, Geography, History, Science and Music.
