Made of metal and has chain to secure them to boots. Leather strap is missing. Has had some inscription but is worn of due to use. The postcard was sent by Harry Holmes who was a member of the Australian Imperial Force based in Egypt at the time. Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. A number of campaigns were fought in this theatre. There were two campaigns involving the AIF. Note that not all the fighting was actually geographically in Egypt. HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/U51448 He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C.https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/U51219 According to his Soldier's Pay Books (Cat. No. 20112) Holmes Registration number was 7983. He was Catholic and enlisted in the Third Military District on 17 September 1915, and embarked on 8 November 1915. Holmes was in the 18th AASC Unit with the rank of Driver at that time. On 15 November 1918 Holmes was promoted to Lance Corporal. He received leave on: * 3 August 1917 - London (10 days) * 19 February 1918 - Paris (10 days) * 27 August 1918 - London (14 days) In 1922 Harry married Edith Pickford of 'Yeovil', Clunes, and they lived at 'Sauchieburn' with Henry's brother Willie. In 1933 Harry and Edith built a new timber home 'Launchley' (Ascot) on the rise east of 'Sauchieburn' on the Ballarat - Maryborough Road. The home was built by Con Zilles to the designs of Clegg and Morrow. In 1938 Harry and Edith purchased a property at Derrinallum, Victoria and called it 'Launchley Park' on their first son's return from World War 2. In 1953 Harry purchased William and Charlotte's portion of 'Sauchieburn' for his son, Bill, and daughter-in-law Margaret. Corporal Francis John Papworth (VX66806) served in the 2/4 Australian Commando Squadron in Timor, New Guinea and Borneo, Tarakan during World War II. His pencil drawn images of the Tarakan camp during May 1945 give an insight into the conditions at that time.Brown cardboard, spiral bound 'The Empire Sketch Book' with five pencil drawings on art paper by Corporal F. A book of drawings and photos published about the trenches in Europe in 1917. Put together by the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces and published by a British publisher. Reproductions of official photographs and cartoons and sketches by members of the A.I.F. Photos show life in the trenches and the war zones, including Ypres, Hill 60, Hindenburg line, Bapaume, Menin Road, Zonnebeke and more. Plus conducting battle operations, Boche prisoners, ruined towns and churches, and the wounded awaiting transport. Most of the drawings are humorous. It is incomplete, the back cover is missing and the pages are only from Page 1 to 24 and 57 to 127. Information from the Australian War Memorial archives says it should have been 157 pages long. Saddle bag used during the First World War. This is presumably a dog saddle bag used to carry machine gun weaponry.This item is a piece of equipement that presumably was used as a dog saddle bag during the First World War. As a WW1 item which presumably would have been worn by working war dogs, this item has an unique history associated with it. It is a rare item, it has historic significance and good interpretive capacity as an unusual piece of war equipment.Fabric and leather saddle bag rectangular in shape with curved edge for the curve of the animal's neck. Fabric is beige-coloured on interior and a thicker woven layer on the exterior is brown with black and light green stripes; fabric remains on only half of the exterior saddle and holes throughout remaining. Saddle has leather binding along edges. Each side carries five pockets, the outer two on each side are fastened by metal buckle and the middle remaining unfastened. Pockets are lined with same beige-cream woven fabric. Gordon Spittle was the youngest of Three brothers. He grew up in Creswick and attended Creswick Grammar School. Gordon purchased 'Mt Cavern' in 1912. It had 4 years of a 10 year lease to run. His mother and father took delivery of it on 1 April 1916. They lived there and farmed it until Gordon returned from active service in May 1919. S. Gordon Spittle married Violet Holmes and both lived at "Mt Cavern" until their deaths. Gordon died in 1942 aged 51. Violet Holmes-Spittle died in 1949 aged 56. The articles summarise battles that the 24th had been involved in, greetings from the Commanders, and news of the battalion. This issue has photographs of the officers who have had long service with the Battalion including Lieut.-Col. W.E. James, Col W.W.R. Watson, Maj. W.H. Ellwood, Capt. F.P. Selleck, and Capt. A.A. A booklet written by Herbert Scanlon (late of the A.I.F.). It's a book of short stories and verse. The author Herbert Scanlon appears to have enlisted at 17 and returned from WW1 in 1916 due to his health. "After the war Scanlon embarked on a career as a writer, eventually publishing some 17 short collections of short stories, poems and the occasional humorous episode. While many of the stories are standard trench experience accounts, a number are written with sensitivity and passion. The booklets were sold for one shilling by door-to-door salesmen," mostly ex-servicemen (Copied from National Australian Archives record for him). A centenary event was held to mark the centenary of the death of Francis Davis, the only Ballarat Junior Technical School student to die on active service during World War One. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced.
