This book by Dr Don Edgar, a well-known Australian sociologist, educator and historian, tells of the establishment and development of art galleries in regional Victoria. This includes the Warrnambool Art Gallery, established in the early 1880s. The book documents the efforts of local groups and individuals to set up art galleries and their battles with government indifference and lack of adequate funding extending up to the present day. Vintage legal documents for land division in Victoria, especially those predating the Torrens system (October 1862), are often found in the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV). These documents, like deeds and Crown grants, can help trace the history of land ownership and division. A letter from the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works stating the application by Mr M. H. Proctor of Wandin dated 23rd April, 1974 for a permit to subdivide land in Wandin Yallock has been approved by the Board on 23 April, 1974. There are conditions required. The bags multiple small pockets are reflective of a movement post 1920s wherein evening bags were designed to hold cosmetics and at times, as in the case of this purse, small mirrors. It is a notably older design, produced by Gabee Products in 1949, their first year of production, by Heinz Arnheim, a Jewish miller who had migrated from Germany to Australia ten years prior. The bag is designed according to 1930s Art Deco sentiments, with industrial metal closures, shell shaped designs and geometric patterns etched into the frame. A contrast to the larger leather bags of the 1940s and the 'current' square and box bags which Dior popularised in 1947.Small black suede shell shaped coin purse with marcasite tuck lock. The seven women and little girl are lining up to begin the 75 yard women's race at the Ithacan Society's annual picnic, which took place at a picnic ground on Melbourne's rural fringe sometime in the 1930s. The photograph was taken in Ithaca, possibly in the village of Kioni where those in the photo are all from, hence the term Kiniotes (ie people from Kioni). Pictured from L-R: Diamando (Mando) Raftopoulos , Yianni Raftopoulos (Tsagaris) and Kalypso Sofianos (nee Raftopoulos). The identity of the little girl is uncertain. She could be Tasia Diamond (nee Paizis) the daughter of Nick and Dora Paizis. All in the photo eventually emigrated to Australia and settled in Melbourne. The population of Kioni, and the rest of the villages on Ithaca, began to decline from the beginning of the 20th century. Two black and white slides of boys in a dining room at a boys camp in 1956-57. Some are wearing paper hats. It is possibly at Blamey House in Kew, as other slides show camps at the residence during summer holidays. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The Bell was presented to the Mission by the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line in October 1957, after the ship made her final voyage to Australia in 1956 and it was broken up in Barrow in April 1957 by Thomas W Ward (UK). In the Annual Report 1957, Padre Oliver mentioned "the bell was found unsuited for the chapel belfry, it is to be mounted on a bracket and placed in the Celia Little lounge."Cast brass bell with wrought iron anchor and hook design wall mount: decoratively plaited cord in maritime knot pattern to resemble chain, sealed with a varnish and attached to cast iron clapper. The photograph features Anastasios Vlassopoulos (Kioukiouris) with his three daughters-in-law, Ekaterini, Korina and Elena, and three little grandsons. They are from L-R: Ekaterina (nee Paxinos), Korina (nee Raftopoulos), John, Anastasios, baby Aleko held by his grandfather Anastasios, Elena (nee Raftopoulos) and Peter. The photograph was taken in the village of Lahos shortly before Ekaterina and son Peter emigrated to Australia to be reunited with her husband, John. Elena remained in Ithaca, as did Korina whose son Aleko Vlassopoulos migrated to Australia following World War 2. Ithacan migration to Australia before World War 2 was unassisted. Generally it followed a pattern of chain migration with family members following one another. The men arrived first with the intention of either returning or saving enough money to bring their wives and families out when they had become financially established. Most men did not return.
