Several seafarers gathered in preparation to run a foot race, 'Melby' Balaclava, Christmas day, 1907. Melby was the house of Mr William Peter Peterson, a station owner and merchant. The house was named after his birthplace, a small town in the Shetlands, Scotland. William Peterson had married Louisa Eliza, the sister of Frederick Sargood,who he was in business with. She died in 1867 and he remarried to Emma Paulin Hutchinson, she is the Mrs Peterson who welcomed the seamen during picnics on the ground of Melby on several occasions in 1914, 1916, 1917 and 1919 (or 1918) generally for Boxing Day. Gathering of seafarers and MTS clergy and LHLG members, at Glenfern 1906. Mrs Mary Danne daughter of Reverend Kerr Johnston was a widow at the time and was renting Glenfern, the property once owned by the Boyd family, and started a private primary school she called Newington College. A member of the Mission's committee from 1905 to 1926 when she passed away, a bras plaque was made in her memory and placed in the chapel of the Flinders Street Mission. (see item 0690) In the Standard published on Saturday 17 November 1906, page 4 we could read: "In connection with the Victoria Missions to Seamen a successful and pleasant outing, was given to the sailors in port on King's Birth day. Mrs. Danne, of "Glenfern," St. Kilda, threw her house and grounds open tor sports and tea. Cricket, football and sports were enthusiastically pursued, and ample justice was done to the substantial tea provided by Mrs. Danne and her friends. The Misses Danne, Miss Godfrey and other ladies were untiring in their attentions. Mr. Axell, first officer of brig Fairy Rock, in a few appropriate words thanked Mrs. Danne and the ladies, on behalf of the sailors, for their kind hospitality. Snapshots of the party were taken by Mrs. Goldsmith. Mr. C A. Holmes and Mr. Cedric Campbell acted as stewards and starters for the races. On the invitation of the chaplain (Rev. A G. Goldsmith*) ringing cheers were given for Mrs. Danne and the ladies. Before the party broke up Mrs Danne addressed a few kind words to the men and gave them all a shake of the band at the gate. The rest of the evening was spent at the Institute, Beach street, where games and competitions were carried on to the accompaniment of vocal and instrumental music. One of the toll bags used to collect tolls on the Great Ocean Road. First "Toll Gate" at Sunnymeade Estate as the road went through land owned by Mr C J Lane. Toll gates followed at "Stradbroke Point",later changed to "Stradbroke Knoll" named after the Govenor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke, Grassy Creek and "The Springs". Mr W D McKay first toll keeper, then Mr & Mrs Wright. Toll commenced circa 1925 and ended 2nd October 1936. Cars were charged at 2/6 for car and driver and 1/- for each passenger. Motor cycles 2/-. In World War 2 residents of Victoria were concerned about enemy attack so a series of Spotters Huts were established along the coast. In Lorne the Spotters Hut was at Queenspark in the old recreation building. Many locals volunteered their time. The plaque was made by the Lorne Historical Society to honour these people who volunteered to join the Air Observers Corp. A rectangular thin Metal sheet , with black printing. This plaque was made in 1997 as a project of the Lorne Historical Society to pay tribute to the Spotters who worked in the spotters cabin at Queens Park Lorne during the Second World War.
