Document, The New Warrnambool Theatre, 1930
This is an original programme issued when the Warrnambool Theatre was opened in 1930 in Kepler Street. The programme for the premiere of the picture theatre included an ‘all talking’ feature, ‘Hollywood Revue’ and all of the 1150 seats were filled. The building replaced the Palais de Danse and the Mansions Theatre, part of the Hotel Mansions destroyed by fire in 1929. The architects for the new theatre were Bohringer, Taylor and Johnson in association with R.A. Le Poer Terry and H. Mervyn Thompson. The Warrnambool Theatre, one of six cinemas in Victoria built in the Spanish Mission style, was renamed the Capitol Theatre in 1935. In 1994 the Capitol Theatre interior was renovated and the rare original design features (only 3 remaining in Victoria at the time) were covered up.This programme has considerable interest as it concerns the opening of the Warrnambool Theatre (later the Capitol Theatre) in Warrnambool. This is a significant building in Warrnambool because of its architecture. This is a programme with a cover and one insert sheet folded into two. The cover is blue with red printing and has an image of the Warrnambool Picture Theatre on the front. The insert pages are buff-coloured with red printing and several advertisements. A blue piece of string holds the programme together. ‘The New Warrnambool Theatre. Direction Civic Pictures’ ‘Premiere Saturday 12th April 1930 Souvenir Programme’ capitol theatre warrnambool -

Tool - Spoke, 1840
This wooden spoke handle from the wheel of the “Success” a former immigrant ship, and later a convict hulk at Melbourne. The sailing ship “Success” was a teakwood vessel built in Natmoo (Natmaw), Tenasserim, Burma (now Myanmar) in 1840 for Cockerell & Co., Calcutta. Over its lifetime of 106 years, it was used to trade in the Indian subcontinent, to transport free emigrants to Australia, as a prison hulk in the Port of Melbourne for both hardened criminals, and later for women and boys, as a storage vessel for ammunition, a reformatory, and as a floating museum sent around the world to tell the tale of the convict era. During the time “Success” was used as a museum, pamphlets were distributed to paying customers advertising erroneously, that the “Success” was the oldest ship in the world. The “Success” sank and was re-floated twice: the first in Sydney in 1885, the second in the USA in 1918, before it was finally burned and sank July 4, 1946 in Lake Erie, near Sandusky, Ohio in 1946. Although the “Success” was home to prisoners while berthed in the Port of Melbourne, it was not used as convict transport. There has been speculation that Ned Kelly’s infamous armour was displayed on the “Success”, but this cannot be verified. Another link to Ned Kelly is Henry Johnson, an Irish prisoner on the Success, who was implicated in the murder of the ship’s warder, and later Johnson was supposedly a bushranger with Ned Kelly. It is also rumoured that Ned Kelly’s father John was a passenger on the Success, but this is also unverified. There are over 16 other ships named “Success”, although one in particular causes some confusion when researching “Success” in Australia. This other ship – the “HMS Success” was a 28 gun frigate built in1823, which was broken up in 1849. It also sailed to Australia. This piece of wood from the ship’s wheel of the “Success” is connected to the ship Success, built in Burma in 1840. The “Success” is connected to the history of Australia because she was used as a merchant ship to transport immigrants to Australia, as a prison ship in Melbourne, a storage vessel, and as a floating “convict” museum, which travelled the world. Document - DUDLEY HOUSE COLLECTION: NOTES ON DUDLEY HOUSE, 1850s
Document on foolscap paper some notes on Dudley House Bendigo Victoria, Australia courtesy of Mr Geoffrey, C. Ingleton father was the former Town Clerk of Bendigo, appointed 1 January 1924. The layout of the building at ground floor level involved the removal of walls along the left side from the entrance creating one large room. Alterations required replacement of doors, 1920's style , with decorative glass panels and door knobs of the period. This report contains excellent descriptions of furniture installed at the house, including a grandfather clock, framed etchings, easy chairs with loose floral covers, and a number of 'occasional chairs' of Rose-wood or Cedar in Edwardian design. The furniture was purchased from Morley Johnson of Bendigo and Sydney. There were also china cabinets, a gramophone in a large upright rose-wood cabriole-shaped cabinet. The name Dudley house may have been earned by reputation, or had a connection to a former tenant - perhaps a State Official or a caretaker.bendigo, history, dudley house -

Magazine, Nature, 1910, 22/12/1910
This magazine was taken to Antarctica by Richard W. Richards, a member of Shackleton's expedition. Richards was a member of the Ross Sea Party. The item was returned to Dick Richards after L. Quartermain found it above Richards' bunk in Cape Evans in 1961 when a party were sent down by the New Zealand Government to clear the hut of ice. Richards later gave it to the donor because of the article on the swerve of cricket balls. This copy of Nature was used by Dick Richards when he was marooned at Cape Evans during the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition. The hut used by Richards and his party was also used by Captain Scott. The magazine dates before the use of the hut by Captain Scott so it may be assumed that it belonged to Scott or one of his party. In 1960, during ice being cleared from the hut, the magazine was found above Dick Richards' bunk and returned to him in 1961. It is therefore a remnant of the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition..1) A magazine called 'Nature', a weekly magazine of science, featuring beautiful advertisements and illustrations. .2) A note on a piece of cardboard written on by Dick Richards .3 An envelope addressed to Leslie B. Quartermain of the New Zealand antarctic Society, with the hand written note 'This copy of "Nature" was found embedded in ice in my bunk at C. Evans in Dec 1960..2) This copy of Nture was brought back from above my bunk in Cape Evans by L Quartermain in 1961. his party were sent down by NZ Govt to clear the hut of ice (250 tons removed) and restore to the condition when Scott and ourselves lived in it in 1911 - 12 and 1914 - 17. It contains an article by J.J. Johnson on swerve in cricket tennis and golf balls etc & settles an argument I often had re lat dip in of a ball [pist?]. The black is due to oily blubber smoke which permeated everything at Cape Evans. antarctica, ross sea, cape evans, nature, richards, dick richards, richard w. richards, scott, robert falcon scott, robert scott, scott of the antarctic, holioake, cricket, r.w. richards, microscope -

Edmund Burke (Don Woodward Collection), Kramnick, Isaac, 1974
From back cover: Edmund Burke has long been recognized as the intellectual source of one of the modern world's most influential political ideologies: conservatism. Yet he took an uncompromising stand for the cause of the American colonies and championed the rights of persecuted Catholics in Ireland and England. In this volume, Isaac Kramnick explores the many sides of this fascinating political sceptic. This multifaceted portrait examines the skillful writings and speeches that catapulted Burke into the aristocratic political community. In addition, the comments of such men as Tom Paine and Samuel Johnson reflect the way Burke's contemporaries regarded the man who decried both the French Revolution and the rape of India by English adventurers. The commentaries by modern historians illustrate the profound impact of Burke's dynamic words and actions on his own time and country and the legacy he has left for the modern world. ------------ Burke was a Whig who served in the House of Commons.Political, social and biographical interest - United Kingdom.Book; 180 pages.
