This book details the lives of the ancestors of the author, Graeme Davison. It begins with the story of Jane Hewett who migrated with her eight children to Australia from England in 1850. The book not only tells the story of the Hewett families but also gives a wider picture of Australian conditions at the time, making it a valuable social history of Australia in the 19th century and beyond. Graeme Davison, Emeritus Professor of History at Monash University in Melbourne, has also written five other books dealing with aspects of Australian history. ‘Self portrait at home’ This artwork was conceived after a series of paintings depicting the interior of my home in Ballarat. Those paintings began as glimpses around the house, mostly captured at night, of hallways, darkened corners, and ominous entrances into bedrooms. Later on I began to fill these spaces with a figure, that of my girlfriend (now wife), and conducted portraits of her placed amongst the shadows in a deliberate attempt to conjure up associations of Baroque painting as well as still images from horror films. I wanted to see what was sinister in this house, to imagine it, as well as observing it directly. ‘Self portrait at home’ is an attempt at summarising the combination of imagination and observation, of wandering through interior spaces as well as being absorbed in it: that what we see is then also taken into our consciousness, or in the case of this painting what we see is about to be swallowed. This concept of combining what is observed with what is imagined and using references to the physical body as a kind of mediator of this process is expressed in Kenneth Slessor’s poem ‘South Country’, a poem that partly inspired my approach to this painting. The following verses provide an example: And over the flat earth of empty farms The monstrous continent of air floats back Coloured with rotting sunlight and the black, Bruised flesh of thunderstorms: Air arched, enormous, pounding the bony ridge, Ditches and hutches, with a drench of light, So huge, from such infinities of height, You walk on the sky’s beach ‘Self portrait at home’ may not express itself as seriously as Slessor’s poem does but I hope it shows the impact as well as the texture and flavour that houses of the Ballarat landscape, and those of the imagination, can have. These essays have been written by Walter Murdoch, a distinguished Australian academic and essayist. Murdoch (1874-1970) gained an Arts Degree at the University of Melbourne, with first class honours in philosophy and logic. In 1901 he came to Warrnambool, going into partnership with James Scott as proprietors of a private school, Warrnambool College. They bought out Warrnambool Grammar School, previously run by John Stanley. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor and headmaster. While in Warrnambool Murdoch continued to write for Melbourne newspapers and published a book, ‘The Struggle for Freedom’ which covers English and Australian constitutional history. This book sold 10,000 copies in its first year. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a lecturing position in English at the University of Melbourne. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. Murdoch became a household name in Australia through his radio broadcasts and syndicated articles and literary columns in several Australian newspapers. During his lifetime Murdoch published over 40 works and he was knighted in 1964. This book is of interest as one written by Walter Murdoch who not only is important in Australian literature and academic circles but also has his place in Warrnambool’s history. Masson supported Antarctic research for 25 years, beginning with Douglas Mawson's expedition of 1911. Born in England and receiving an MA, BSc and DSc from the University of Edinburgh, he was a gifted, elegant and disciplined lecturer and a researcher of substance. His research work included the theory of solutions, from which emerged the term 'critical solution temperature'; the periodic classification of the elements; and the velocity of migration of ions in solutions. Much of his research was done in collaboration with talented students such as David Rivett and his own son Irvine Masson. Masson was knighted in 1923. Born in Ireland, John Drummond Kirkland trained as a chemical analyst through apprenticeship in a medical laboratory in Dublin, before migrating to Australia in 1852 and moving to Melbourne in 1855. While still an undergraduate medical student at the University of Melbourne, he was appointed lecturer in chemistry following the sudden death of John Macadam in 1865. Due to the enthusiastic support of his fellow students this temporary role became a permanent appointment the following year. Kirkland continued his studies, graduating in medicine in 1873 and surgery in 1880. His son, John Booth Kirkland, was appointed as his assistant in 1878, later leading to accusations of nepotism. In 1882 John Drummond Kirkland became the University?s first professor of chemistry and metallurgy, continuing until his death in 1885. Today?s researchers use a high performance computing facility named ?Kirkland? after the first Professor of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne. Chemistry was still controlled by the medical school during Kirkland?s career, but became part of the science degree from 1886, along with the appointment of David Orme Masson as professor. Kirkland struggled for University funding to buy new apparatus. To compensate, he bought much from his own personal funds, including analytical chemistry equipment. Chemistry was first taught at Melbourne in the medical school, located in the area now occupied by Physics and the Ian Potter Museum of Art. This book is a novel written by Wendy Scarfe. Born in 1933 Wendy Scarfe was educated at Melbourne University and Melbourne Secondary Teachers’ College. She has taught in Australia, England and India where she worked for the Gandhian Movement. Her final teaching post was at Warrnambool High School (now Warrnambool College). She has published many novels, biographies, volumes of poetry and other works dealing with social issues. Several of her published works were co-authored with her husband Allan (dec. 2016) This book is of considerable interest as the author is a Warrnambool resident and a noted Australian writer. The heisswasserpular designed by Dr Walzer-Frank was used as a vaginal douche by attaching a rubber hose to the glass connector which was then inserted into the vagina. The Robert Orton Medal is awarded at the discretion of the Council of the College (formerly the Board of the Faculty), the sole criterion being distinguished service to anaesthesia. The award was established by the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, in 1967. Robin William Smallwood was Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons from 1986 - 1987. Smallwood died 6 October 1987 after a brief illness. Smallwood completed medicine at the University of Melbourne in 1958 and decided on anaesthesia as a career, attaining his FFARACS in 1964. The Orton Medal was awarded posthumously.Die cast medal mounted in a hard blue velour base, with a wooden gold frame. The medal is placed inside the base, with a red velvet ribbon coming out from underneath, used for removing the medal. Underneath the medal is a two cent coin, stuck to the base. This image could be one of several formal occasions attended by Lady Maie Casey and Lord Richard Casey, as both were dedicated patrons of International House. In March 1963, Lord Casey opened the Samuel Wadham Wing, named for the man in the centre of this image. Samuel Wadham (1891–1972) was a professor of agriculture at the University of Melbourne and chair of the International House Council from 1959 to 1969. Of Maryanne Coutts' exhibition at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery Maryanne Coutts wrote: 'The same old story' is a curious phrase. As usual I can't tell you exactly in words what the story is,simply that I hope that this body of work evokes characters and implies the actions and interactions that engender a story. For me the story if seeking itself, trying to understand what about itself is repeatable yet malleable, rememberable yet changeable. The Triumph of Gutenberg' celebrates the seemingly ordinary by manifold ways that information is transferred and transformed. It arises from a fascination with the way a thought evolves from one idea to the next, often repeating itself, but sometime making leaps and in the dark mutating. Famed for introducing movable type and the printing press to Europe in 1450, Gutenberg enabled the mass production of books. He has consequently become a symbol for the power of the dissemination of knowledge. Vehicles for repeatability, like printing, are myriad and range from specific codes, such as DNA, to more ephemeral language systems like visual and narrative. Stories are my favourite vessels of memory, of recording. It seems that a story can have certain characteristics that allow it to be recognised as a particular story, indeed, that allow it to be repeated withing different narrations, different readings. As a visual storyteller, I have been curious about how much can change while the story remains the same, Within this visual exploration of what I consider to be a consistent story, conveyed through different media, scales, shapes, and styles, I have allowed mutations, which I hope will illuminate the repetition. In some ways this work is a direct response to Poussin's 'The Triumph of Pan', whose arrangement of figures approaches a kind of formal abstraction. As I worked through the drawing, painting and print that are in this exhibition, I have looked increasingly to more recent interpreters of that tradition like Beckmann, Layered, then, withing this story are other stories, other histories. In a metaphoric sense repeatability and mutability characterize both how the work came into being and how, being something more than paper, canvas and pigment, it can travel audiences' neural pathways as both memories of sights seen, as new thoughts ans/or as old thoughts and memories now mutated.
