Anthony Truscott ( 1856-1913) was a Cornishman who came to Bendigo in 1880. He initially undertook mining interests before opening a grocery store in 1884. The house at 2 Havilah STreet, "Kilhallen", was probably named after his hometown in Cornwall.Real Estate advertisement for a home built by Anthony Truscott in 1900 called Kilhallen. There are three photos, one of the two story house, one of the ornate fireplace and a small add on building at the rear. Written at the top of the page is: Old shop pulled down and a new one Built Feb 90. Long Gully Super Market closed riteway 14/1/85. opened again May 1985. Archir Harker was married to Ruby Wilson and mentioned in the "Wielands of Heathmont "book. From Greg Coker: In August 2023, RDHS asked Greg Coker to scan a set of negatives. He was able to work out, through various notes, that the pictures were taken by J A Harker of 9 Grange St, Mont Albert in the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Most of the film was 9cm X 6cm B&W negatives. All pictures have been cropped and where appropriate, put through a light filter. They have been scanned at 1600ppi resulting in ~3meg B&W shots (~5meg for the half dozen colour shots). The Harkers certainly liked their hiking – they were ahead of their time. Images scanned from Kodak Print packet of negatives, undated. After scanning in 2023 by Greg Coker, the negatives were disposed and just the packet retained. Some photos may be duplicated in other VC Harker/Weiland family records if the original prints were donated. Greg's comments: Early 60s – Original Negatives. Best guess in terms of the date – Mrs Harker looks a touch older. Pictures of Mrs Harker at home with their cat and some mountain ranges, perhaps the other side of the Dandenong’s. The hospital eye appointment card for Louisa LEONARD was found behind the mantlepiece when the donor was renovating 128 Evans Street, Port Melbourne. Louisa was 8 years old, and her hospital number was A6414. Regular appointments are listed from April to June 1922 under the names of Dr J F RUDALL and his Assistant Surgeon, Dr John BOX. The consultation fee was one shilling and patients had to provide their own Medicine Bottles or pay three pence for one from the hospital. One handwritten and one typed copy of an article in the Bendigo Advertiser dated Wednesday February 3, 1897. The article referred to an overwinding incident at the Victoria Quartz Mine. It was a new winding plant. A lever would not move and with the motion of the engine, which he could not check, the cage was rapidly taken to the popper heads. It was held there by the safety catches and the cable detached. And damaged portion of the rails at the top of the legs and some iron and timber on both the old and new engine houses. It is likely that this object belonged to Dr Giles.Chevalier Jackson medium size steel made laryngoscope. Hexagonal shape design on handle and arm blade with a thumb support at the handle angle, missing the bulb light and all the system to support it. Deep scratches over the top and under blade with presence of dust marks over the handle, arm and inside the blade canal. Also has a grey paint mark over the top blade area. Seven men were killed at the Great Extended Hustler's mine disaster on 2nd May 1914 by an explosion of dynamite occurring as the men were waiting at the plat to ascend the mine at the end of their shift. No blame was attached to anyone in the findings of the inquisition. It was unknown what caused the dynamite to explode. Three page typed document by Albert Richardson. Copy of handwritten document. 'The Flooded Mine, John McCaviston's Wonderful Escape' by G. Mackay (History of Bendigo). Article details the events that surrounded the flooding that occurred at the Hustlers Reef Company's mine on 13th December 1873. Water was being drained from the adjoining old workings of Latham and Watson, when the flow increased markedly, causing flooding. John McCaviston was the 'shift boss'., R. Jackson the Manager. Recommends the right to lay a pipeline across the area from the dam to the proposed battery site, and also the transfer to your company of an area on the eastern side, as near as possible to the area granted on the north. The Ballarat School of Mines was founded in 1970 and was the first institution of formal technical education in Australia. 1970 marked the centenary of the School and that of technical Education in Australia. A centenary commitee was established to plan activities and projecty sot celebrate the occasion. These included five centenary lectures fro secondary school students, a film of the School to be made and shown on National Television, a centenary medallion centenary posters, a dinner for local organisations with Council and staff as hosts, an historical notebook on the school, a plaque mounted to mark the site of the original school, opening of the Mt Helen Campus, Relocating the Old SMB battery ot mt Helen, student reunion, Art display of present and former students, Mt Helen Open Days and distribution of car stickers. A Centenary Appeal was established to finance a Great Hall and Sports Centre at the Mt Helen Campus. The Appeal President was Cr W.J.C. North. The materials testing laboratory secured and retained registration by the National Association of Testing Authorities for a range of tests on concrete and metals. The student accommodation at Mt Helen 23 Page report (with supplementary finances) in a soft cover showing a picture of the Former Ballarat Circuit Courthouse which was used as the first building of the Ballarat School of Mines. The report includes a page of stamps produced to commemorate the centenary of Technical Education in Australia through the Ballarat School of Mines. The report was presented by Council President Morgan Bevan John. The report includes information on the new campus for the Tertiary Division at Mt Helen, including information on the buildings being constructed by local builders. The site plan was developed by G.J. Harrison and L.H. Vernon and Associates. The following staff resigned: E.R. McGrath (deceased), E.W. Ryan, I.L. Hunter. The following new appointments were made: R.l. Martin, G.K. Tampi, T.F. Norwood, K.M. Llewellyn, M.J. Evans, J.F. Clark, K.G. Millar, B.R. Rollins, L.G. Shome, C.I. Dowling, M.H. Pitfield, G.M. Veterinary equipment. Although glass mortars and pestles are fragile, they are stain-resistant The substance to be ground is placed in the mortar and ground, crushed or mixed using the pestle. It would have been used to break up tablets. (identified by vet. Peter Honey) These items were found in an old walk-through dairy at Wombat Track near Orbost. These items are representative of items used in Orbost on dairy farms in the first half of 20th century.A mortar and pestle. The mortar (2397.1) is a shallow bowl. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageAnvil
This anvil was once the property of Warrnambool Ports and Harbours. It is associated with the shipping trade and wold have been used by a blacksmith or tinsmith for forging and shaping metal. According to Pliny, the anvil is supposed to be invented by Cinyra of Cyprus, but it was probably much older. There has been very little change in the basic design of the anvil since Greek and Roman times. This anvil is significant for its association with the local government body of Warrnambool Ports and Harbours, which is of local historic significance. This police baton or truncheon is typical of the ones used by police in Australia perhaps late in the 19th century or early in the 20th century. No information has yet been found as to the identity of the owner or the significance of the letters, ‘A P 1304’. There are several possibilities as the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum which operated from the 1870s to the 1960s included several police batons. The owner of this baton is not known but is retained pending further research.This is a wooden police baton. The rounded body is tapered towards the top and it has an incised ridge near the top and a knob on the top to form a handle. The ridge at the top may be for holding a string or rope to carry the baton on the wrist. The wood has been varnished but it is now much worn and discoloured. This 2014 calendar was produced in Warrnambool and features reproductions of photographs of Warrnambool in past times. The photographs include the Botanic Gardens, the Breakwater, the War Memorial, Proudfoots Boatsheds, Liebig Street, the old Information Pavilion and the Hopkins River near the mouth. The photographs in the calendar come from the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and were reproduced with the permission of the Society. This calendar is of minor importance but it does demonstrate the popularity of locally-produced yearly calendars and the interest in photographs of times gone. This is a 2014 calendar featuring twelve photographs of Warrnambool in past times. The photographs have been coloured or tinted and the front cover has a copy of the photograph featured for the month of March. The front cover has a brown edging and the inside front cover and the black cover are white. The dates are printed in two colours and vary from month to month. The Hotel Warrnambool, the second in Warrnambool to have that name, was built on the site of the old Hotel Mansions (Ozone Coffee Palace / Ozone Hotel) which was destroyed by fire in 1929. The Hotel Warrnambool was opened in 1931 using the licence transferred from the Hotel Mansions. It has played a major role in the social and economic life of the city since this time.This luggage label from the Hotel Warrnambool is of some historical significance as the hotel is a prominent one in Warrnambool today built on the site of the Hotel Mansions regarded as the finest building ever to be erected in Warrnambool. Buff coloured rectangular label with maroon text. Two corners of the card are mitred. The label features a open ended wreath with the letters WH entwined in its centre. The first kiln built on Phillip Island in the 1870's for Mr John West. It was situated in Thompson Avenue next to Wests General Store. When the kiln was demolished, the bricks were used to build the old Post Office on the corner of the Esplanade. Mr John West gave a Banquet at the Isle of Wight Hotel to celebrate the opening of his kiln.Water Colour Sketch. This picture was reconstructed by Jean Archibald from pencil sketches by S Serpell in 1905, and an artist who travelled to Phillip Island with the "Vagabond", a journalist for the "Leader", in 1889. The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) opened the seminary in 1934. These photographs were part of the advertising for the opening ceremony. The Jesuit Order had a presence on the site from 1934 to 1974 where a house of formation and studies for the Society of Jesus was located (the current Old Loyola building purchased by the College in 2002). Stubley Holden dealership 1960s. The Stubley Group began in 1946 when Purcell Stubley purchased a site with petrol bowsers in Main Street from 'Snowy' Jessop. In 1948 Purcell began building the new Stubley Motors, working round the old site to keep the business operating. It was completed in 1951.
