A charabanc or "char-à-banc" is a type of horse-drawn vehicle or early motor coach, usually open-topped, common in Britain during the early part of the 20th century. It has "benched seats arranged in rows, looking forward, commonly used for large parties, whether as public conveyances or for excursions." It was especially popular for sight-seeing or "works outings" to the country or the seaside, organised by businesses once a year. The name derives from the French char à bancs ("carriage with wooden benches"), the vehicle having originated in France in the early 19th century. In Australia a modern similar type of bus or motorcoach, with a lateral door for each row of seats, survived up to the 1970s and was referred to as side loader bus; but all or most of them were not open-topped. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. Photo provided by Surrey Hills branch of State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1978 for launch of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and was one of the first photos in the collection. These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia in circa 1989. There is no information available on why the unit sent the team to Melbourne, the occasion, and the winner of this contest. It may have been a military athletics carnival held to commemorate Australia’s First Fleet bi- centenary, noting there was other members of Army Svy Regt on the bus who were not part of this team. The team’s coach was WO1 Ken Slater. The nine postcards in this set were donated together and date to the early 1900s. All but one postcard in this set shows images of Warrnambool, in the Western District of Victoria; the other has a London image. The postcards were all printed in Great Britain according to that country’s postal regulations. The fronts of all cards have titles printed in red. Most of the images on the cards are attributed to photographer Joseph Jordan and belong to the Jordan Series. The back of these cards has an outline for a postage stamp, a vertical dividing line and a heading on each side of the line to separate the Correspondence from the Address. However, this postcard is the 'odd one out' in that its location is London, it has no border, it has no reference to 'Jordan' or 'Jordan Series' no reference to the printer, no 'correspondence heading', it is slightly smaller than the others, and it has text in the stamp area that refers to 'inland' and 'foreign' postage, a half-penny inland and one-penny overseas.. Postcards or ‘correspondence cards’ appeared in Britain in 1894. They were plain cards with a space for the message on one side and an address on the other; regulations didn’t allow anything but the address to be written on the ‘address’ side. In 1902 the British regulations then allowed a picture to be printed on the front and the address on the back, so messages had to be written on the picture side. Soon, the regulations changed and the back was divided for a message and the address. New Gaiety Theatre, Strand [London] - The New Gaiety Theatre opened in 1903 on the corner of The Strand and Aldwych, London. The second show performed in the new theatre was “The Spring Chicken” in 1905. The third show followed in 1907. The preprinted postage cost on the stamp outline is ½ d. or half penny; according to The Great Britain Philatelic Society, Great Britain Postcard Stamps were priced 1/2 d. or Half Penny from 1-Oct-1870 to 3-Jun-1916. The postcard is significant for its inclusion with a set of nine postcards, eight of which are images of Warrnambool and its district and photographed by Joseph Jordan. It is also curious for is lack of connection to Jordan. Postcard, one of nine, portrait orientation, coloured print. The image shows a tall three-storey corner building with a statue on its domed tower and smaller towers on the sides. The top two storeys have balconies with columns, and overhang the ground floor, providing cover over the footpath. The foreground has horse-drawn carriages and coaches, and motorised vehicles including a bus. Figures wearing top hats and others in long dresses are in front of the building, which has a sign on the corner advertising the building and its current show. There is no correspondence written on the card. The front of the postcard has a printed red title and an inscription on the image. The reverse has inscriptions and outlines for a postage stamp. William Kleinert (Friedrich John Wilhem Kleinert) made wine from the grapes he grew. The house was built in 1905 and was the home of William and Emily Kleinert from 1905. William was a coach-builder, wheelwright and blacksmith. He moved from Prahran to Surrey Hills. His son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, it built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The Kleinert land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. The Kleinert property later became the South Surrey Park. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s. Ernest and Ida Kleinert lived on the corner of Scotsdale and Warrigal Roads. The donor of the photo Nada Harris, nee Kleinert, was Ernest and Ida's daughter. These were the official Australian team's sunglasses issued to competitors at the Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, Norway in 1994. The glasses belonged to Paul and Adrian Costa however they could not wear them because the Costa brothers were sponsored by Oakley at that time. The four Costa brothers - Paul, Adrian, Simon and Tom - all skied for Australia in mogul and freestyle competitions. They attended school at Falls Creek and Mt Beauty and were members of the Falls Creek Race Club. Paul’s first major event at the age of 16 was the Falls Creek Summit Masters, where he finished second in the Open Class. In 1993 he placed fourth at the FIS Freestyle World Championships in Austria. He was selected to represent Australia at the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games in 1994. After these Games, Paul ended his competitive career and took up coaching junior teams and was a member of the coaching staff for the 2006 Torino Olympics. Adrian is a four-time Olympian, who competed in freestyle skiing at the 1992 Albertville, 1994 Lillehammer, 1998 Nagano and 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games. He contested the moguls event at all four Games and his best performance was 14th, making the finals at both the Albertville and Lillehammer Games. At Salt Lake City, Adrian had the honour to carry the Australian Flag in the Opening Ceremony. He competed at the World Championships from 1993 until 2001 and recorded his best place of 9th at the 1993 World Championships. His best World Cup performance was a silver medal in 1998. In total, Adrian Costa made 126 World Cup starts between 1991 and 2003, placing 31 times in the top 10 and seven times in the top five. This carte de visite was taken of Hiram Crawford in fire brigade uniform taken by Stewart & CO., Melbourne. Hiram Crawford was Captain of the Beechworth Volunteer Fire Brigade for twenty-five years. Hiram arrived in Australia at the age of 21 in August 1853. He mined for short time at Back Creek Bendigo, then went to the Ovens where he sought gold in Spring Creek, Buckland and 3 Mile. After moving to Albury for 18 months he married Anna, moved to Woolshed and was there for two years mining gold. After discovering his fortune he formed Crawford and Co. Coaching Lines in Beechworth in late 1856. It was this company which became the longest surviving coaching business in the State of Victoria. Hiram and Anna had two daughters. Anna died in March 1862 and in May Hiram left from Melbourne to return to the United States on a visit. Hiram married Martha Foster during this visit and returned to Australia in March 1863. With his coach line established, and leaving it under management, he moved around the north east of Victoria establishing and building shops and the Star Hotel and Theatre in Chiltern in 1866. In 1869 he moved to Melbourne for a few years in which time he built the Eastern Arcade in Bourke Street. In 1876 the family returned to Beechworth for a few years eventually moving to Everton where Hiram grew hops, tobacco, fruit trees and established the largest lemon orchard at that time in Australia. Hiram spent a considerable amount of his time helping to develop the North East of the State not only in his private endeavours but as a public figure. Among his many achievements a few are listed - Councillor, Mayor of Chiltern and Beechworth, President of the Shire on two occasions, Director of many mining companies, Inaugural Chairman and Director of the Beechworth Gas Company roles he held for over 20 years, Foundation member of Beechworth Pottery, Committee member of the Beechworth Hospital, Captain/Superintendent of the Vol. Fire Brigade for over 20 years, Foundation, Life member of and on the State Fire Brigade Board for many years, President of the North Eastern Railway League in Chiltern On a personal level Hiram was involved in lodges including St. Johns #14, Beechworth. and had several grazing properties in the Ovens area. He had the Forest Park Hotel at Carboor, the Creamery at Carboor, and grazing land on which the Milawa Creamery was built during his ownership. He was a committee member for 3 committees duirng the 1888 International Exhibition in Melbourne. Hiram had many voyages around the world studying irrigation, hop growing, tobacco growing and drying. During his retirement in Melbourne Hiram purchased many properties in the Elsternwick area and acted as an Estate Agent. After the death of his second wife Martha, Hiram married for the third time in 1912 to Sophia Maude Heatley. Crawford and Co continued until 1921. The Ballarat School of Mines traditionally had a strong Australian Rules Football team. The 1982 team included Tony Lockett who went on to play at the highest level becoming the highest goal scorer in the history of the VFL/AFL with 1,360 goals in a career of 281 games, that commenced in 1983 with the St Kilda Football Club, and finished in 2002 with the Sydney Swans. Lockett is the only full-forward ever to win the coveted Brownlow Medal, in 1987, a season in which he was decorated with several honours. He is a four-time Coleman Medallist, kicked more than 100 goals in a season on six occasions (an AFL record), and is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. The Ballarat School of Mines traditionally had a strong Australian Rules Football team. The 1982 team included Tony Lockett who went on to play at the highest level becoming the highest goal scorer in the history of the VFL/AFL with 1,360 goals in a career of 281 games, that commenced in 1983 with the St Kilda Football Club, and finished in 2002 with the Sydney Swans. Lockett is the only full-forward ever to win the coveted Brownlow Medal, in 1987, a season in which he was decorated with several honours. He is a four-time Coleman Medallist, kicked more than 100 goals in a season on six occasions (an AFL record), and is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Foreword Intro: Life story of Australian croquet champion Elsie Isabel Baner (1900-1983) who, in her early thirties in late 1933, began to play crouet on a newly-formed lawn adjoining the Ringwood Bowling Club. Within three years, she won the hightly prestigious English Silver Medal (B Class Division) and was immediately upgraded to A Grade. Elsie remained a champion player for the next three decades and was acknowledged by her colleagues as "a legend in her own lifetime. Author, Dr Sue Summers, is the maternal granddaughter of Elsie Isabel Baner and Frederick Thomas Baner. Awarded to the Croquet Australia Hall of Fame on 1st December 2023, for demonstrated leadership and influence in croquet in Australia as a player, coach and mentor.

Kalorama Gap viewed from the South West in 1908. Ellis Jeeves' 'Mountjoy' is in the centre with the stables to the left. The raspberry patch belongs to Harry Walker and the building centre right to Edward Joseph Price. Taken around 1858, depicting a row of five business buildings on a rocky, sloping hillside at New Town, with a view across to residences and open land. Businesses included, Joseph E. Bishop, Coach Builders; Straughair Duncan, Engineers, Blacksmiths & Farriers; Straughair Duncan, Beechworth Foundry; Wholesale & Retail Est. 1855, Mackenzie Family Store ; and T. Pratten, Grocer. The Mental Hospital can be seen in the background. Mark Straughair and John Duncan, established the Beechworth Foundry, Newtown in 1858 and went on to build an important industry, employing around sixteen men, after acquiring Alexander Roger's New Ford Street Foundry in the late 1860s. Making and repairing mostly mining and agricultural machinery for the Ovens District and a Beechworth brewery, the business continued to function after Straughair's death in 1882, up until the death of Duncan in 1896, when the business folded. THis collection of cuttings relates to the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company.The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company was established in 1868 when capital was raised with 2000 shares at a value of five pounds each.It was established to provide passenger, accommodation and a large stock and freight service between Warrnambool and Melbourne.. At the time Stephen Henty was operating three steamers along the coast and at the prospect of losing his Warrnambool trade with the establishment of the new Warrnambool company, he sold one of his steamers , the Edina in March 1868. The first five directors elected were F P Stevens, J G Crammond, WW Jamieson, R B Paterson and George Wood. Fares were from one to three pounds and freight was 17 shillings per ton.The steamers connected with coaches from the north of Warrnambool as far as Hamilton. The cuttings record the financial position of the company for the first ten years. This collection of cuttings is valuable as a research item as it documents the development and operation as well as many of the stake holders in one of Warrnambool's earliest shipping companies. The cuttings are from a range of papers including The Warrnambool, Examiner, The Warrnambool Advertiser and the Argus.Ledger book with blue pages which is lacking the cover. This is a set of four photographs of three Regimental Sergeant-Majors (RSMs) of the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna. Their appointments as RSM spanned from 1963 to 1976. WO1 Robin Wilson’s appointment was from 1963 to 1966. He served in the Australian Army from 1946 to 1979. WO1 Wilson ended his service in another corps as a commissioned officer and reached the rank of Major. WO1 Peter Gale’s appointment was from 1966 to 1968. He served in the Australian Army from 1946 to 1968. WO1 John Hogan’s appointment was from 1968 to 1976. After transfer from the British Army, he served in the Australian Army from 1952 to 1976. WO1 Hogan continued his service in Defence as the RAN Liaison Officer located in Fortuna’s coach house building for several more years.
