Set of three Black and White photos of unknown date and photographer: 1 - Photo shows MMTB AEC Mk III bus, on a Footscray route late 1970's doing the U-turn at the intersection of Queen and Flinders Street Melbourne. These bus chassis were built by AEC in the UK between 1951 and 1953 and bodied by Commonwealth Engineering (Comeng). This particular bus was tendered for sale in July 1980. 2 - Three MMTB Mk 4 buses stored at Clifton Hill depot prior to their sale Numbers 618, 604 and 607. All showing Clifton Hill. 618 has an advert for Bosch. The chassis for these buses were built in 1956 with the bodies by Lawton Pty Ltd of Adelaide. Buses 604 and 607 were offered for sale during July 1980. 3 - three Mk III buses, numbers 583, 584 and one other at a depot during the early 1980's which had been converted to ambulances for use during state disasters. Based on the reference 3rd reference document, there were four buses converted - 581 to 584 and were sold during 1980. Document - Envelope - Scholars' Concession Tickets Collected, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB)
Envelope for collecting expired or about to be expired Scholars' Concession Tickets from students. Listed the number of tickets collected, the number sections the ticket was valid for, Conductor, Outfit Number and Date. It would appear that in the 1950's and perhaps earlier, that conductors had to collect if possible the concession passes from school children on the last day of term. In the collection (Reg Item 937), is a Scholar's Concession Ticket for the First term of 1956, which expired on 11-5-1956. On the outside cover are the words "This ticket must be returned when purchasing a Concession Ticket or upon the Date of Expiry".Shows an example of the methods the MMTB used to collected expired Scholar tickets by Conductors.Envelope - brown paper - titled Scholars' Concession Tickets Collected - Form 3/433, Aug 1950. Photograph - Candy Corner - St Kilda - opposite Luna Park - Esplanade, Early 1940s
Photograph shows the cafe and adjacent buildings on the area that was enclosed by Esplanade tram Loop or Luna Park loop. Known as "Candy Corner" on MMTB drawings and locally. The reference page 9 gives the background to the site and its use. The café was designed by Carlo Catani, who is also remembered as the landscape designer for other parts of St Kilda including Catani Gardens. It is now used by a McDonalds store. In front of the building is a board advertising or promoting World War 2 war-saving schemes for St Kilda streets. Photograph of MMTB Track cleaner - dust vacuum car No 6 at Preston Workshops. Reference page 76 of Destination City says the tram was built in 1915 by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust as a general works car and rail flusher and further modified by the MMTB adding the vacuum equipment to try to control dust. Became known as No. 6 in 1934. Was out of use from the early 1940s and scrapped in 1948. At the time, Route 67 ran from St Kilda ran from Balaclava Junction to St Kilda, Acland St via Dandenong Road. Ceased in 1955.
