Furniture - Table, Ralph Speirs, Warrnambool Triton Woodwork Club, 2009
The turpentine timber used to construct this table was originally used to build the second Hopkins River bridge in 1895. That long timber truss road bridge was built across the river close to the river mouth. The first Hopkins River bridge was built in 1862. That bridge was replaced by the second bridge, built in 1895. In 2001 the new third bridge was built to replace the 1895 bridge, in a design to look similar to the 1895 bridge. The timber from the second bridge was recycled to make this hall table, a cheeseboard presented to the Mayor at that time, and other mementos. The plaque attached to the table states the table was made in 2009 by Ralph Speirs, Warrnambool Triton Woodwork Club. The table is significant for its connection with the second Hopkins River bridge, built in 1895. The timber used to make the table has been recycled from the second Hopkins River bridge that was destroyed to make way for the new, third bridge. The Timber Truss Hopkins River Bridge was classified with State Significance on 16th April 1996, being the oldest of six surviving timber truss bridges in Victoria and the most intact timber road bridge of any type for its size and age. Its design was unique within Australia. It was the largest timber bridge built in Victoria during the 1890s. The bridge was of importance to the economical development of the region, opening up access to allow ease of trade and social connections between the eastern region of southwest Victoria and the town, later city, of Warrnambool and regions further west.Table made from turpentine timber. The timber was recycled from the second Hopkins River Bridge after the bridge was destroyed. The bridge was built in 1895. The table was constructed in 2009 by Ralph Speirs, Warrnambool Triton Woodwork Club. The front corners of the table are rounded and bthe back corners are straight. A plaque with eight rows of text is attached to the table."TABLE BUILT FROM TURPENTINE TIMBER RECYCLED FROM THE SECOND HOPKINS RIVER BRIDGE, BUILT IN 1895 AND DEMOLISHED IN 2000 TO BE RPLACED BY THE PRESENT THIRD BRIDGE. Photograph - Photographs, Kew Bowling Club: Loose Photographs in Sleeve, 1988-1998
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. One of the best finds at Club Terrace was the 'Ace of Clubs' mine which was later sold to the Mallina Gold Mining Company. Syd Cadwallader was appointed manager of the company. The gold was smelted and brought to Orbost on horseback. The only protection against thieves was a revolver and riding crop, which the manager always carried. Wooden Club, Indian Club
This Indian club comes from an early 20th century Warrnambool Men’s Physical Culture group but it is not certain which one it was. Gymnastics and Physical Culture groups were very popular in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. They were usually attached to sporting or church groups and had both male and female participants. One important Physical Culture group in Warrnambool was a Sandow group, dedicated to promoting the Sandow philosophies and system of physical exercise. Eugen Sandow was a German who gained fame as a strong man, touring the world demonstrating his feats of strength and promoting his philosophy of health and good living. He toured Australia in 1902 and the result was the formation of many Physical Culture groups promoting the Sandow system. The Warrnambool group was said to be the first Sandow club established in Australia. No information has been found on the name ‘Dicks’ on the base of the club. This Indian club is of interest as a memento of the times in Warrnambool when many gymnastics and physical culture groups were operating. It may be a memento from the Warrnambol Sandow Physical Culture Group. This is a bottle-shaped wooden club with a wooden knob at the top end and three ridges incised into the main section of the club. The wood has been varnished but the surface is now a little rubbed and worn. A name is written on the base in black ink‘……Dicks’ warrnambool physical culture groups, eugen sandow -

This item from the Border Morning Mail, Albury reports on the total destruction of the Albury Ski Club Lodge in 1958. The Lodge had been built by the Albury Ski Club members during their weekends and spare time starting in 1948. The fire was probably caused when a drum of petrol stored in the lighting plant room exploded. The building had fortunately been insured and the Albury Ski Club was able to build a new lodge to replace it.This article is significant because it documents an importance incident in Falls Creek.A newspaper item reporting on the destruction of the Albury Ski Club Lodge from the Border Morning Mail on Saturday 19th April 1958.albury ski club, albury ski club lodge fire -

Melbourne Legacy
Document, Rules and Objects. Intermediate Legacy Club, 1949
A document outlining the rules and objectives of the Intermediate Legacy Club (ILC). Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. An important summary of the objectives and work of the Intermediate Legacy Club.
