Mitta Junction which was established about 1920 on the Victorian side of the Hume Dam construction site (originally called the Mitta Junction Reservoir). The town was built to house workers and their families. It included houses, private and government boarding houses, a shop, hall and school as well as tennis courts and a cricket pitch. Mitta Junction was a thriving community with many activities, including Balls and Euchre Nights, held at the Hall which opened in February 1922. The community also fielded a very successful football team in the local competition. After the completion of the Dam, the village and all its contents were sold at auction in June 1936 for £7,000. Individual houses sold at about £40 for removal to nearby towns. The Mitta Junction School which opened in 1922 continued to operate with very small numbers after the village was moved. Its numbers were boosted in the early 1980s by the children of Army staff at the nearby Latchford Barracks Army Apprenticeship School. Some of them had skied in Norway and taken part in the Norwegian Birkebeiner Ski Race in 1979, the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club was formed. In 1989, a 42km event named the Australian Birkebeiner Ski Marathon was held and the organisers also included a half distance of 21km called the Birkebeiner and a 7km event called the Birkebeiner Lite. Photographs of handicap dependents at enjoying music and dance from a military band that featured in an edition of the Answer. There were frequent events and activities organised by Melbourne Legacy for handicapped dependents. The Junior Legatees, with many mums and friends of Legacy went to the Defence Force School at Watsonia Barracks and were treated to a performance by the 2/10 Medium Regiment Band. The Bandmaster was WOI Dave Farrell and there was a surprise visit by a clown. According to the article "Former JL Sharon Taylor, now a corporal with 'Visits Protocol and Ceremonial' at the Defence Centre - Melbourne, gave a moving tribute to Legacy in recognition of the support she had received as a young girl. Junior Legatees were given an opportunity to play some of the musical instruments and the enjoyment is evident as the photos show." This history was put together by Legatee Ron Crosbie, branch secretary 1959-1963, 1968-1974 and 1995-1999. Appendix 4 gives an account of where the information was sourced from. This short history deails the formation until the branch combined with the Williamstown/Werribee branch to form The Western Branch. In quite some detail Ron Crosbie describes the gathering together of several Legatees to form the new branch. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp at Somers Camp (believed to be Somers School Camp). This photo is from 1991. An article in the widows' newsletter in 1992 explains more detail on the 1992 camp. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp. Six school girls from Siena College came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Photos included Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Also a cake and sandwiches enjoyed by the gathering. Beryl Billing was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. He titled it 'The Task-Focused Volunteer: An Evaluation of the Work of the Legacy Club of Melbourne'. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service.
