Diggers & Mining. Chinese on the goldfeild. Gold. The census of 1854 showed only, 2,341 Chinese in Victoria, but it was taken at a time when their numbers were increasing rapidly. In 1854, 4,920 Chinese arrived by sea in small, over-crowded vessels; and 11,289 came in 1855. Many pictures drawn by Gill in 1854 and 1855 show Chinese on the goldfields. Markings: 9 994.GOL. The Austox "Dental and Midwifery" (D-M) machine has been sectioned for teaching purposes. Namely, one of the two white, circular chambers on either side of the machine has been sectioned to show the tambour inside, as has the central valve and one of a connection point below the chamber on the left. Collection of papers used by E J (Jack) Barker when he was teaching at Ballarat School of Mines. They are Applied Mechanics courses - Fluid mechanics and Machines. Jack chose to do Engineering while still at Footscray Technical School as it gave access to Diploma Courses and tertiary studies. This enabled him to enter the University of Melbourne and do a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering - 1945, 1946, and 1947. In 1948 he did a Diploma in Education at Melbourne University. From this path he was able to follow a career in teaching and his first appointment was at the School of Mines in Ballarat, (SMB) 1949. He became the first Vice Principal of SMB in 1960 and then Principal in 1964 to 1976. From 1976 to his retirement in 1987, he was the Foundation Director of Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). Graeme DRENDEL (1953- ) Born Ouyen, Victoria Graeme Drendel is a key Australian figurative painter and printmaker who believes you should paint what you know. He studied Art Teaching at the Ballarat Teacher' College and Ballarat School of Mines in 1971 and 1972 before completing a Diploma of Teaching Art and Craft at Melbourne State College in 1974. While studying in Ballarat Graeme lived in the student hostel 'Beaufort House'. After teaching for several years, Graeme undertook a life changing and extensive travelling tour throughout Italy, United Kingdom and United States at which time he decided he would always depict the human figure. Recognised for his intelligent observations of the human condition, Graeme’s art invites contemplation and reveals the humour of everyday life. The isolation he portrays through his characters may relate back to the isolation he felt on the wheat farm he grew up on. As a prolific user of sketchbooks Graeme Drendel records close observations, which can inform his paintings.
